Polymer Micromachined Flexible Tactile Sensor for Three-Axial Loads Detection

  • A flexible three-axial tactile sensor was fabricated on Kapton polyimide film using polymer micromachining technology. Nichrome (Ni:Cr = 8:2) strain gauges were positioned on an etched membrane to detect normal and shear loads. The optimal positions of strain gauges were determined through strain distribution from finite element analysis. The sensor was evaluated by applying normal and shear loads from 0 N to 0.8 N using an evaluation system. Sensitivity of the tactile sensor to normal and shear loads was about 206.6 mV/N and 70.1 mV/N, respectively. The sensor showed good linearity, and its determination coefficient ($R^2$) was about 0.982. The developed sensor can be applied in a curved or compliant surface that requires slip detection and flexibility, such as a robotic fingertip.

The Subsurface Stress Field Caused by Both Normal Loading and Tangential Loading

  • The subsurface stress field caused by both normal loads and tangential loads has been evaluated using the rectangular patch solution. The effect of tangential loading on the subsurface stress field has been investigated in detail for both the cylinder-on-cylinder contact and a spur gear teeth contact. For the cylinder-on-cylinder contact, the subsurface stress fields are moved more to the direction of tangential loads and the positions where the maximum stress occur are getting closer to the surface with the increasing tangential loads. The subsurface stress fields of the gear teeth contact are expanded more widely to the direction of tangential loads with the increasing tangential loads. The friction coefficient of a gear teeth contact is low because they are operated in a lubricated condition, and therefore surface tractions in the EHL condition hardly affect on the subsurface stress field.

Rolling Test Simulation of Sea Transport of Spent Nuclear Fuel Under Normal Transport Conditions

  • In this study, the impact load resulting from collision with the fuel rods of surrogate spent nuclear fuel (SNF) assemblies was measured during a rolling test based on an analysis of the data from surrogate SNF-loaded sea transportation tests. Unfortunately, during the sea transportation tests, excessive rolling motion occurred on the ship during the test, causing the assemblies to slip and collide with the canister. Hence, we designed and conducted a separate test to simulate rolling in sea transportation to determine whether such impact loads can occur under normal conditions of SNF transport, with the test conditions for the fuel assembly to slide within the basket experimentally determined. Rolling tests were conducted while varying the rolling angle and frequency to determine the angles and frequencies at which the assemblies experienced slippage. The test results show that slippage of SNF assemblies can occur at angles of approximately 14° or greater because of rolling motion, which can generate impact loads. However, this result exceeds the conditions under which a vessel can depart for coastal navigation, thus deviating from the normal conditions required for SNF transport. Consequently, it is not necessary to consider such loads when evaluating the integrity of SNFs under normal transportation conditions.

Two case studies on structural analysis of transmission towers under downburst

  • Downbursts are of great harm to transmission lines and many towers can even be destroyed. The downburst wind field model by Chen and Letchford was applied, and the wind loads of two typical transmission towers in inland areas and littoral areas were calculated separately. Spatial finite element models of the transmission towers were established by elastic beam and link elements. The wind loads as well as the dead loads of conductors and insulators were simplified and applied on the suspension points by concentrated form. Structural analysis on two typical transmission towers under normal wind and downburst was completed. The bearing characteristics and the failure modes of the transmission towers under downburst were determined. The failure state of tower members can be judged by the calculated stress ratios. It shows that stress states of the tower members were mainly controlled by 45 degree wind load. For the inland areas with low deign wind velocity, though the structural height is not in the highest wind velocity zone of downburst, the wind load under downburst is much higher than that under normal wind. The main members above the transverse separator of the legs will be firstly destroyed. For the littoral areas with high deign wind velocity, the wind load under downburst is lower than under normal wind. Transmission towers are not controlled by the wind loads from downbursts in design process.

수평축 풍력터빈의 공력 하중 비교 (I): 난류 유입 유·무 (Comparison of Aerodynamic Loads for Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (I): with and without Turbulent Inflow)

  • 본 연구에서는 난류 유입조건을 갖는 수평축 풍력터빈 블레이드의 공력 하중에 대해 초점을 맞추어 연구하였다. 난류모델은 풍속과 방향에 대한 변동을 포함하며, 그 특성은 난류 강도와 표준편차로 표현된다. IEC61400-1에서는 정상 난류 모델과 정상 풍속 측면도에 대해서 피로해석을 수행하도록 규정하고 있다. 이를 위해 공력 최적설계 절차를 통해 얻어낸 MW급 수평축 풍력터빈 블레이드 허브와 저속 회전축에 대한 공력하중 해석을 수행한다. 공력하중 성분은 수치적인 절차를 통해 얻어내며 이를 블레이드 회전 특성을 고려하여 해석적으로 검토하였다. 난류 조건을 고려했을 때의 최대 추력과 토크의 변동치는 난류 조건을 고려하지 않았을 때의 값들에 비해 5~8 배 더 큰 값을 보였다. 따라서 난류 조건을 반영한 하중 해석은 풍력터빈 블레이드의 구조설계에 있어서 필수적임을 확인하였다.

  • In this paper, a statistical analysis of fatigue crack growth behavior under constant amplitude loads has been carried out. Fatigue crack growth tests were conducted on sixteen pre-cracked compact tension (CT) specimens of the pressure vessel (SPV50) steel in controlled identical load and environmental conditions. The assessment of the statistical distribution of fatigue crack growth experimental data obtained from SPV50 steel was studied and also the correlation of the parameter C and m in the Paris-Erdogan law was discussed. The probability distribution function of fatigue crack growth life seems to follow the 3-parameter Weibull. The fatigue crack growth rate seems to follow the 3-parameter Weibull and the log-normal distribution. The coefficient of variation (COV) of fatigue crack growth life was observed to decrease as the crack grows. A strong negative linear correlation exists between the coefficient C and the exponent m in Paris model. Fatigue crack growth rate data shows a normal distribution for both m and logC.

  • This paper presents the results of the repeated sliding tests to determine the wear-life of TiN coated AISI 52100 bearing balls deposited by PVD method and to show the wear mechanisms of those. The sliding tests were carried out using a ball-on-disk tribometer under ambient conditions. The coefficient of friction, wear volume and the cycles to failures of TiN coated bearing balls were measured with different normal loads and roughness of lower specimens. On the wear-life diagram, the normal loads and the cycles to failure showed the good linear relation on log-log coordinate. With a decreasing normal load, the diagram showed that the wear-limits, at which the coated bearing balls survived more than 4000cycles were under 0.1N of the normal load.

Behaviour of a plane joint under horizontal cyclic shear loading

  • This paper describes lab test results of artificial rock-like material samples having a plane joint. Cyclic shear tests were performed under different normal loads and different shear displacement amplitudes. For this purpose, multi-stage normal loading tests (30 kN, 60 kN, 90 kN, 180 kN, 360 kN and 480 kN) with cyclic excitation at frequency of 1.0 Hz and different shear displacement amplitudes (0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 2.0 mm, 4.0 mm, 5.0 mm, and 8.0 mm) were conducted using the big shear box device GS-1000. Experimental results show, that shear forces increase with the increase of normal forces and quasi-static friction coefficient is larger than dynamic one. With the increase of normal loads, approaching the peak value of shear forces needs larger shear displacements. During each cycle the normal displacements increase and decrease (rotational behavior in every cycle). Peak angle of inclination increases with the increase of normal load. A phase shift between maximum shear displacement and maximum shear force is observed. The corresponding time shift decreases with increasing normal load and increases with increasing shear displacement amplitudes.

  • A DC power system has many loads with varied functions. Also, there may be large pulsed loads with short duty ratios which can affect the normal operation of other loads. In this paper, Voltage Bus Conditioner(VBC) without any current sensors is proposed to damp the bus voltage transients by parallel pulsed loads. The proposed control approach requires only one voltage sensor and carries out both the functions of damping the bus voltage transients and maintaining the level of energy stored. The proposed control technique has been implemented on a TMS320F2812 Digital Signal Processor(DSP). Simulated results by a Matlab Simulink and experimental results are presented which verify the control principles and demonstrate the practicalty of the approach.

전기화재 징후 감지를 위한 아크전류 파형분석에 관한 연구 (A Study on Analysis of Arc Current Waveforms for Detection of Prognostics of Electrical Fires)

  • 전류 돌입형, 비선형 및 전류 단속형 부하들은 정상작동 상태에서 아크 발생의 경우와 유사한 전류파형을 갖는다. 이러한 부하들에서 아크 검출기법을 정확하게 구현하기 위하여서는 아크 유무에 따른 전류파형의 전형적인 특징을 찾을 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서는 UL 1699의 직렬과 병렬 아크 발생장치들로 이러한 부하들에 마크를 발생시키고 시간 및 주파수 영역에서 아크 전류파형을 분석한다. 아크 실험의 분석결과를 통하여 아크 전류파형의 전형적인 특징은 시간영역에서는 영점전류의 처짐 현상이고 주파수영역에서는 60Hz 고조파 성분을 제외한 전대역의 주파수에 걸쳐서 스펙트럼 크기가 증가되는 것임을 보인다. 비선형 및 전류 단속형 부하들에서 시간영역보다는 주파수영역의 아크 전류의 특징이 보다 명확히 나타남을 보인다. 본 논문에서 제시된 아크 전류파형의 특징들은 아크 차단기 개발을 위한 기반자료로 활용될 것으로 기대된다.
