PURPOSE: This study compared the effect of training ankle joint and hip joint thera-band exercise on balance. METHODS: The participants were divided into two groups of 11 each. Group A performed hip exercise after ankle exercise, and Group B performed ankle exercise after hip exercise. Using a green thera-band, the dorsiflexion and plantarflexion and hip flexion and hip extension were exercised repeatedly for 15 seconds three times with a five-second rest between each set. After the exercise and measurement of one area were complete, the exercise and measurement of the other area were performed at one-day intervals. The balance ability was assessed using a Tetrax and Y-balance test and repeated three times; the best values were taken. RESULTS: In the stability index (ST) of the static balance, the hip joint exercise group (HTG) during the follow-up of normal eye open (NO) revealed notable improvement over the ankle joint exercise group (ATG), and in the follow-up of the normal eye closed (NC), the ATG showed significant improvement over the HTG. In the pillow with eye closed (PC) follow-up, the ATG showed significant improvements over the HTG. At the left (Lt) and Y-balance test (YBT), the ATG showed significant improvements in the follow-up over the HTG (p <.05). CONCLUSION: In static balance, the ATG showed significant improvement in the follow-up of NC and PC over the HTG. In the dynamic balance, the Lt. dynamic balance on the non-dominant side in the ATG showed significant improvement in the follow-up over the HTG.
The starry flounder Platichthys stellatus, like all flatfish, exhibits conspicuous lateral asymmetry in numerous traits, most obvious of which is the migration of one eye to the other side of the head during metamorphosis. Additional changes related to eye migration include asymmetrical pigmentation, and a behavioral shift from larvae that exhibit upright, open-water swimming to juveniles and adults that lie on the ocean floor, eye side up. However, the morphology of these juveniles has been quite plastic in recent years, a phenomenon which is thought to be related to a diverse suite of semi-intensive and intensive larviculture methods. The cause of morphological abnormalities in the farmed flatfish is poorly understood. In the present study, we observe the features of morphological specificity and abnormality of immature fish (mean total length 23 cm) and survey the occurrence frequency of the specificity and abnormality of juvenile (mean total length 6.70 cm) in artificial culture facility. We find 2 types of abnormality (e.g., albino in ocular side and hypermelanosis in blind side) and 1 type of specificity (e.g., lateral polymorphism). These considerably differ from normal individuals (has sinistral eye and pigmented on only one side) by several characteristics (dextral eye, ocular side albinism, blind side hypermelanosis). The incidences of albinism, hypermelanosis, and body reversal are $10.1{\pm}2.56%$, $91.7{\pm}1.7%$, and $13.1{\pm}1.1%$, respectively. These suggest that these morphometric and morphological differences occur more in artificial environment during and just after metamorphosis.
A 13-year-old neutered female Maltese was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University with 8-month-history of gradually enlarging retrobulbar mass in the right eye. On the ophthalmic examinations, exophthalmos, exposure keratitis, and cataract were observed, and menace response was absent in the eye. The fellow eye was normal except for nuclear sclerosis. On the ocular ultrasonographic evaluation, a mass was identified in retrobulbar and periocular region in the right eye. Exenteration was performed in order to remove the mass. Histopathologic evaluation revealed that most part of the mass was composed of epithelial-like neoplastic cells. Invasion into adipose cells and osseous metaplasia around the mass were also confirmed. Based on the radiologic and histopathologic examination, the mass in the right eye was diagnosed as primary retrobulbar meningioma. Eleven months after the surgery, recurrence was not observed.
Purpose: To make a comparative study of correlation between biometry data of size in eyeball and refractive error. Methods: The subjects were 68 normal university students (male 36, female 32) and the average age was 22.85${\pm}$3.12. We measured the students' eyesight by A-scan ultrasound and refractor. The results were examined it's statistical significance by SPSS 12.0 version. Results: The mean of axial length was 24.31${\pm}$1.24 mm, chamber depth was 3.48${\pm}$0.28 mm, lens thickness was 3.56${\pm}$0.26 mm and corneal thickness was 0.55${\pm}$0.03 mm. Male's Axial length and chamber depth were larger than female's. As reflective error decreases the thickness of lens become thicker. The measurement data between right eye and left eye didn't had difference and there was no correlation with result of T-test. There were statistically significant correlation with length and chamber depth, axial length and corneal thickness, chamber depth and corneal thickness, and refractive error and lens thickness (p<0.01). Refractive error and axial length were minus linear regression (r=-0.56). Conclusions: Eye's refractive error was changed by axial length, chamber depth and lens thickness but it wasn't related with sex and whether it is a right eye or a left eye.
Objective : Moxibustion is one of the primary remedies in traditional oriental medicine. We successfully treated a one patient who complained of oculomotor nerve palsy related to diabetes mellitus with moxibustion. Methods : We performed moxibustion treatment on the protuberances surrounding the Mok-chang acupoint and adjacent frontal scalp of the patient's head at the same time every day and observed the recovery of eye movement and changes of ptosis. Results : After about I week of moxibustion treatment, there were some changes of ptosis and eyeball movement. The patient felt better opening his eyes than before and seemed to reduce his paralytic condition. After 14 days, ptosis was remarkably improved, although slight diplopia remained, and eye movement had recovered to almost normal. Furthermore, his blood glucose was on the decrease and revealed an average 120 mg/dl. Conclusions : Moxibustion treatment performed on the Mok-chang acupoint remarkably improved ptosis and limited eye movement arising from oculomotor nerve palsy related to diabetes mellitus. We hope moxibustion is used for treating nerve palsies and similar diseases in the future.
In ophthalmology, a pupillometer, a device to measure the diameter of the pupil of the eye, can provide information on the function of the autonomic nervous system. The current pupillometers on the market are either too large to be a handheld instrument, or relatively expensive. In this study, a pupillometer based on a smartphone was designed. Both white and infrared LEDs and a 3M pixel camera of a smartphone were applied for the visual stimuli to an eye and for the acquisition of the eye images, respectively. Contrary to the existing method of pupil measurement that usually observe the variation of pupil diameter, the proposed algorithm in this study was applied to calculate the constriction ratio of the pupillary area in response to pupillary light reflex. The results showed that the constriction ratio of the pupillary area were all in the normal range (above 4.0) from the sixteen healthy participants. It is believed that the approach to pupil measurement used in this study is suitable for a mobile interface, and this system can be applied to clinical research, home-use healthcare, and distributed to some areas which suffer from problems like a lack of medical support.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the Limits of stability(LOS) in hemiplegic patients who can walking independently. The LOS was measured at stable surface, unstable surface with eye open and eye closed. In this study, 18 out-patients were evaluated who were treated at Yonsei University Medical Center Rehabilitation Hospital. In order to determine the statistical significance of results, T-test, paired t-test, and Kruskal-Wallis 1-way ANOVA were applied at 0.05 level of significance. The results were as follows: 1. The mean of lateral limits of stability was 9.89 degree. 2. The mean of anteroposterior limits of stability was 6.43 degree. 3. There was a significant difference of limits of stability between sound side and affected side(p<0.05). 4. The limits of stability was significantly decreased with eye closed(p<0.05) 5. The limits of stability was significantly decreased at unstable surface(p<0.05). 6. The limits of stability was a significant difference as spasticity degree of ankle plantar flexors(p<0.05). These results showed that the limits of stability in hemiplegic patients was more decreased than that of normal adult. In order to improve the balance in hemiplegic patients, we need to increase the limits of stability.
Six frogs (Rana nigromaculata 25∼40 gm) were adapted to light for 2 hours. Then 0.02 ml of 3% nicotinamide and 0.02 ml of 0.6% folic acid were injected into the vitreous body of the right eye-ball, and 0.02 ml normal saline solution into the vitreous body of the left eye-ball respectively. After dark adaptation for an hour-their heads were cut off under a dim red light (650 $m{\mu}$). The retinae were removed from the left eye-ball for the control group and from the right for the test group respectively. Then rhodopsin was extracted from the retinae with 3 ml of 2% digitonin solution(pH = 7.0) for 17 hours at 0$^{\circ}C$ in the dark. The optical densities before and after the illumination of the extract were measured and compared with those of the control group. The results are as follows: 1) The group which had been injected with 0.02 ml of 3% nicotinamide solution had the promotive action on tile regeneration of rhodopsin in comparison with the control group. 2) The group which had been injected with 0.02 ml of 0.6% folic acid solution had the controlling action on the regeneration of rhodopsin in comparison with the control group.

In the Japanese garden, a unique planting design has been used to improve visual harmony with the surrounding landscape by planting plants around the objects that are not harmonious with surrounding landscape. In this study, physiopsychological effects of plants caused by a traditional planting skill used in Japanese garden was verified in terms of visual relaxation using eye movement recording and semantic differential method. A total of fourteen Japanese volunteers(seven male and seven female) who have normal vision(aged $21{\sim}28$) participated as subjects. Experiment was carried out in the sealed room of Chiba University in Japan. Four different types of scenery models were presented which were created by combination of the three landscape factors of the surrounding background, the object that disturbs visual harmony, and the trees planted for improving visual harmony with the surrounding landscape. In the results, significantly more gaze fixations were measured on the trees than on the object and higher values in positive feelings were recorded for the stimuli with proper planting combination. Our results indicated that proper tree planting can cause physiopsychological relaxation by improving visual harmony with the surrounding landscape and provided new evidence for supporting scientific validity of the traditional planting skills.

In the naked eye observation, the health of livestock can be controlled by the range of activity, temperature, pulse, cough, snot, eye excrement, ears and feces. In order to confirm the health of livestock, this paper uses calf face image data to classify the health status by image shape, color and texture. A series of images that have been processed in advance and can judge the health status of calves were used in the study, including 177 images of normal calves and 130 images of abnormal calves. We used GLCM calculation and Convolutional Neural Networks to extract 6 texture attributes of GLCM from the dataset containing the health status of calves by detecting the image of calves and learning the composite image of Convolutional Neural Networks. In the research, the classification ability of GLCM-CNN shows a classification rate of 91.3%, and the subsequent research will be further applied to the texture attributes of GLCM. It is hoped that this study can help us master the health status of livestock that cannot be observed by the naked eye.
