  • By integrating the eye head-position monitioring devices, the present authors developed an eye-controlled human/computer interface based on the line-of-sight and an intentional blink to invoke commands. Also modified was an existing calibration method to reduce the visual angle between the target center and the intersection point of the derived line-of-sight. This modified calibration method allowed 108 or more command blocks to be displayed on the 14 inch monitor with the target acquisition probability(hit rate) of 98% when viewed at the distance of 500 mm apart. An active triggering method using an intentional blink was proposed and was shown to be a feasible and efficient alternative to invoke commands with total triggering time of 0.8 sec or less. The system could be used by the normal people as well as the handicapped individuals as a new human/computer interface.

Diagnosing Reading Disorders based on Eye Movements during Natural Reading

  • Diagnosing reading disorders involves complex procedures to evaluate complex cognitive processes. For an accurate diagnosis, a series of tests and evaluations by human experts are required. In this study, we propose a quantitative tool to diagnose reading disorders based on natural reading behaviors using minimal human input. The eye movements of the third- and fourth-grade students were recorded while they read a text at their own pace. Seven machine learning models were used to evaluate the gaze patterns of the words in the presented text and classify the students as normal or having a reading disorder. The accuracy of the machine learning-based diagnosis was measured using the diagnosis by human experts as the ground truth. The highest accuracy of 0.8 was achieved by the support vector machine and random forest classifiers. This result demonstrated that machine learning-based automated diagnosis could substitute for the traditional diagnosis of reading disorders and enable large-scale screening for students at an early age.

A Novel Scheme for detection of Parkinson’s disorder from Hand-eye Co-ordination behavior and DaTscan Images

  • With millions of people across the globe suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD), an objective, confirmatory test for the same is yet to be developed. This research aims to develop a system which can assist the doctor in objectively saying whether the patient is normal or under risk of PD. The proposed work combines the eye-hand co-ordination behaviour with the DaTscan images in order to determine the risk of this disorder. Initially, eye-hand coordination level of the patient is assessed through a hardware module. Then, the DaTscan image is analysed and used to extract certain geometrical parameters which shall indicate the presence of PD. These parameters are then finally fed into a Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network using Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) Back propagation training algorithm. Experimental results indicate that the proposed system exhibits an accuracy of around 93%.

매선요법을 병행한 특발성 동안신경마비 한방치험 1례 (A Case of Idiopathic Oculomotor Nerve Palsy Treated with Korean Medicine Including Needle-embedding Therapy)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to report a case of idiopathic oculomotor nerve palsy improved by Korean Medicine therapy including needle-embedding therapy. Methods : We treated a 69-year old male patient who has Rt. ptosis, Rt. eye movement impairment, and dizziness with various Korean medical therapy including acupuncture, Bojungikgitanggami, and Hominis Placenta pharmacopuncture. To promote recovery, we additionally performed needle-embedding therapy to periocular acupoints. Results : Ptosis started to remarkably improve after performing needle-embedding therapy. After 54 days of treatment, ptosis and eye movement impairment of Rt. eye were significantly improved similar to the normal eye. Dizziness was cured in a few days after administration. Conclusions : This case suggests Korean medicine including needle-embedding therapy is effective against oculomotor nerve palsy symptoms especially for ptosis.

진폭비 섭동에 의한 cross-eye 재밍에 대한 수치적분 기반 성능분석 (Numerical Integration-based Performance Analysis of Cross-eye Jamming Algorithm through Amplitude Ratio Perturbation)

  • 본 논문에서는 기계적 결함에 따른 실제 진폭비와 명목상 진폭비의 차이를 정규분포를 갖는 랜덤변수로 모델링할 때, crosse-eye의 재밍 효과의 성능 분석을 다룬다. 수치 적분 기반 접근법을 사용하여 구한 mean square difference (MSD)를 제안한다. 수치 적분 기반 접근법을 사용하여 구한 MSD는 1차 테일러 근사 기반성능 분석 방법과 2차 테일러 근사 기반 해석적 성능 분석 방법을 이용하여 계산한 analytic 기반 MSD보다 근사하지 않은 Monte-Carlo 기반 Simulation MSD에 가깝다. 이는 수치 적분 기반 MSD가 정확성이 더 높은 것을 뜻한다. 계산비용이 큰 Monte-Carlo 기반 Simulation을 이용하지 않아도 수치적분을 통하여 MSD로 주어지는 진폭비 섭동이 성능 저하에 미치는 영향을 구할 수 있음을 보인다.

개에서 발생한 원발성 녹내장 43례 (2006 ~ 2009) (A Retrospective Study of Primary Glaucoma in Dogs: 43 cases (2006 ~ 2009))

  • To determine the prevalence of the primary glaucoma (PG) and occurrence of primary glaucoma in initially non-affected normal eye. Medical records of 7751 dogs presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) of Seoul National University (SNU) between January 2006 and December 2009 were examined. Among 7751 dogs, forty three dogs (0.55%) developed PG. The following breeds were included in the study: 18 American Cocker Spaniels, 17 Shih Tzus, 3 Mixed Breeds, 2 Malteses, 2 Pekingeses, and 1 Chow Chow. The mean onset age of PG in the first eyes was $7.1{\pm}2.3$ years in the all breeds. Compared with Mixed Breed (0.54%), American Cocker Spaniel (3.16%, p = 0.004) and Chow Chow (20%, p = 0.001) had a higher risk of developing glaucoma. Twenty six of 43 dogs (60.1%) were females with male-to-female ratio of 1:1.53. Twenty nine of 33 eyes (87.9%) developed glaucoma in the fellow eye within mean ${\pm}SD$ time of $17.5{\pm}2.7$ months. From this study, American Cocker Spaniel and Shih Tzu were the most frequent PG breed in Korea. Also, unilateral PG dogs developed glaucoma in the non-affected normal eye within approximately 17 months. The results indicate that prophylactic medical therapy with antiglaucoma agents should be considered to delay or prevent developing glaucoma in non-affected normal eye.

상상연습과 동작관찰 동안 전방머리자세의 대뇌겉질 활성도 비교 (Comparison of Electroencephalographic Changes during Mental Practice and Action Observation in Subjects with Forward Head Posture)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in motor cortical excitability during mental practice and action observation in subjects with forward head posture. Methods : This study was performed in two groups, a forward head posture group (n=17) and a normal posture group (n=17). Electroencephalography (EEG) was conducted to investigate cerebral cortex activity, and six electrodes were attached to Fp1, Fp2, C1, C2, C3, and C4 to measure the relative alpha power, relative beta power, relative gamma power, and mu rhythms. The subjects were requested to perform the four different conditions, which were eye opening, eye closing, mental practice, and action observation for 300 seconds. Results : The results showed that the relative alpha waves showed a significant difference between the normal and forward head posture groups in the C1, C2, C3, and C4 regions with the eyes open (p<.05). The relative beta waves also showed a significant difference between the two groups in the Fp1 and Fp2 regions during action observation (p<.05). The relative gamma waves were significantly different between the normal and forward head posture groups in the Fp1 and Fp2 regions during action observation (p<.05) in C1, C2, and C3 with eyes closed (p<.05) and in C1, C2, C3, and C4 with eyes open (p<.05). Conclusion : The results of this study showed that EEG change in the forward head posture group was different from that in the normal control group in action observation rather than in mental practice. Therefore, we are expected to provide a neurophysiological basis for applying action observation to motor skill learning during exercise for correcting forward head posture.

중뇌 및 시상 출혈 환자에 나타난 단안의 부분 동안신경마비 증례보고 (Case of Monocular Partial Oculomotor Nerve Palsy in a Patient with Midbrain and Thalamus Hemorrhage)

  • A 51-year-old man developed diplopia while driving. The brain CT film demonstrated a hemorrhage in the left midbrain and thalamus. On our first diagnosis after 8 days from onset, partial ptosis and limitation of adduction in the left eye were detected. We evaluated that the patinet's digestive system was weak, so that treated the patient with Bojungikki-tang and Sa-am acupuncture Bi-Jung-Geouk(脾正格). As a result, limitation of adduction was recovered to about 90% of normal range and Ptosis was recovered just likely with the normal eye.

  • Sleep is associated with definite changes in respiratory function in normal human beings. During sleep, there is loss of voluntary control of breathing and a decrease in the usual ventilatory response to both low oxygen and high carbon dioxide levels. Especially, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is a distinct neurophysiological state associated with significant changes in breathing pattern and ventilatory control as compared with both wakefulness and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. REM sleep is characterized by erratic, shallow breathing with irregularities both in amplitude and frequency owing to marked reduction in intercostal and upper airway muscle activity. These blunted ventilatory responses during sleep are clinically important. They permit marked hypoxemia that occurs during REM sleep in patients with lung or chest wall disease. In addition, sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is more frequent and longer and hypoventilation is more pronounced during REM sleep. Although apneic episodes are most frequent and severe during REM sleep, most adults spend less than 20 to 25% of total sleep time in REM sleep. It is, therefore, possible for patients to have frequent apneas and hypopneas during REM sleep and still have a normal apnea-hypopnea index if the event-rich REM periods are diluted by event-poor periods of NREM sleep. In this review, we address respiratory physiology according to sleep stage, and the clinical implications of SDB and hypoventilation aggravated during REM sleep.

고방을 통한 정상안압 녹내장의 한방치험 1례 (A Case of Korean Herbal Medicine Treatment for Normal Tension Glaucoma using Go-Bang)

  • Objectives: To provide a case report of effective use of Korean herbal medicine treatment to reduce the development and progression of normal-tension glaucoma(NTG). Methods: This case involved a 52-year-old patient who had a history of excimer laser surgery at the age of 25 and was using prescriptions such as Cosopts2 and Xalatan for eye drops. We treated this patient with Korean herbal medicine treatment for 2 years and assessed the progression of NTG based on the optical coherence tomography test results that he recevied at the ophthalmology clinic every 6 months. Results: During the two years of treatment with Korean herbal medicine, it was observed that the progression of NTG was halted. However, after discontinuing the Korean herbal treatment, the progression resumed. Conclusion: Korean herbal medicine treatment was found to be effective in treating normal tension glaucoma, and a minimum treatment period of two years is necessary for an accurate evaluation of NTG.
