  • The bonding behaviors of Lightweight Aggregate Concrete (LWAC) and normal weight concrete were investigated experimentally. Pull-out tests were carried out to measure the bond strengths of three groups of specimens with compressive strength levels of 60, 40, and 20 MPa, respectively. Test results showed that the difference in the bond failure pattern between LWAC and normal weight concrete was significant as the concrete compressive strength became lower than 40 MPa. The corresponding bond strengths of LWAC were lower than that for normal weight concrete. As the compressive strength of concrete became relatively high (> 40 MPa), a bond failure pattern in normal weight concrete occurred that was similar to that in LWAC. The bond strength of LWAC is higher than that for normal weight concrete because it possesses higher mortar strength. Stirrup use leads to an increase of approximately 20% in nominal bond strength for both types of concrete at any strength level.

  • This study presents results from an experimental work for two normal prestressed concrete beams and three dual prestressed concrete beams. The dual prestressed concrete beams made with normal concrete in compression zone and high performance steel fiber reinforced concrete in partial depth of tension zone. Through cyclic loading test under low frequency, structural behavior and resistance to dynamic loading for dual prestressed concrete beams are investigated. Considerable increase of crack and yield load capacity of Dual prestressed concrete beam is shown compared with normal prestressed concrete beam. In addition, re-loading and un-loading rigidity of dual prestressed concrete beam under cyclic loading are increased comparing with normal prestressed concrete beam.

  • Because of the problem of increasing self-weight due to the enlargement and high-rise of buildings using normal aggregate concrete, the need for structural lightweight aggregate concrete increases. However, early strength prediction is required when placing structural lightweight aggregate concrete, but research is insufficient. In this study, the ultrasonic pulse velocity of normal aggregate concrete and lightweight aggregate concrete was measured at early age. As a result, the ultrasonic pulse velocity of lightweight aggregate concrete was lower than normal aggregate concrete according to elapsed time at early age.

  • This study examines the physical and mechanical properties of the concrete using rice straw ash. Materials used for this experiment are rice straw ash, normal portland cement, superplasticizer, natural sand and gravel. Test results show that the unit weights of concrete using rice straw ash were decreased 1 ∼ 3% and the highest strengths were achieved by 5% filled rice straw ash concrete, with increase of compressive strength by 19%, tensile strength by 53% and bending strength by 16%, as compared with those of the normal cement concrete. The strength ratio of rice straw ash concrete was higher than that of the normal cement concrete. Also, the durability against sulfuric acid 5% solution was increased with increase of the content of rice straw ash. It was 1.33 times of the normal cement concrete by 10% filled rice straw ash concrete and 1.47 times by 15% filled rice straw ash concrete, respectively Accordingly, rice straw ash concrete will greatly improve the properties of concrete.

  • Concrete-to-concrete bedding planes (CCBP) are observed from time to time due to the multistep hardening process of the concrete materials. In this paper, a series of direct/cyclic shear tests are performed on CCBP under static and dynamic normal load conditions to study the frictional behavior effect by the shear velocities, normal impact frequencies, horizontal shear frequencies, normal impact force amplitudes, horizontal shear displacement amplitudes and normal load levels. According to the experimental results, apparent friction coefficient k ($k=F_{Shear}/F_{Normal}$) shows different patterns under static and dynamic load conditions at the stable shear stage. k is nearly constant in direct shear tests under constant normal load conditions (DCNL), while it is cyclically changing with nearly constant peak value and valley value for the direct shear tests under dynamic normal load conditions (DDNL), where k increases with decreasing normal force and decreases with increasing normal force. Shear velocity has little influence on peak values of k for the DCNL tests, but increasing shear velocity leads to increasing valley values of k for DDNL tests. It is also found that, the valley values of k ascend with decreasing impact normal force amplitude in DDNL tests. The changing pattern of k for the cyclic shear tests under constant and dynamic normal load conditions (CCNL and CDNL tests) are similar, but the peak value of k is smaller in CDNL tests than that in CCNL tests. Normal load levels, shear displacement amplitudes, vertical impact frequencies, horizontal shear frequencies and normal impact force amplitudes have little influence on the changing pattern of k for the cyclic shear tests. The tests of this study provide useful data in understanding the frictional behavior of the CCBP under distinct loadings, and these findings are very important for analyzing the stability of the jointed geotechnical structures under complicated in situ stress conditions.

  • Recently, the importation of overseas cement has been increasing and the spot materials of different quality from Japan have to be treated in overseas construction work for technical cooperation with neighboring countries. However, a study on the quality of those oversea materials has not yet been carried out systematically, especially cement among those materials. Accordingly, in this study the properties of high-strength concrete with oversea cement imported from four countries in East Asia and South-east Asia were investigated under normal and high temperature condition, including the carbonation of normal-strength concrete under normal temperature. As a result, it is found that the required of normal-strength concrete will be expected regardless of temperature condition when the flowability is ensured by selecting the appropriate superplaticizer and dosage of it, and the carbonation rate of normal-strength concrete with overseas cement is approximately the same as that with Japanese one under the condition of the same compressive strength.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a reference data for the development of high workable and normal strength concrete using Polycarboxylate superplasticizer and granulated blast furnace slag as concrete admixtures. So in this study, it is quantitatively evaluated the workability, compressive strength, the heat of hydration and dry shrinkage of high workable concrete on normal compressive strength($21{\sim}27MPa$) for the practical use in construction field. As a result of this study, it is appeared that the performance of high workable and normal strength concrete is superior than that of ready-mixed concrete of the same strength through the B/P tests in the plants.

  • Tests on steel tubular columns of square, rectangular and circular section filled with normal and lightweight aggregate concrete were conducted to investigate the failure modes of such composite columns. Thirty-six full scale columns filled with lightweight and normal weight aggregate concrete, eighteen specimens for each, were tested under axial loads. Nine hollow steel sections of similar specimens were also tested and results were compared to those of filled sections. The test results were illustrated by a number of load-deflection and axial deformation curves. The results showed that both types of filled columns failed due to overall buckling, while hollow steel columns failed due to bulging at their ends (local buckling). According to the above-mentioned results, and due to low specific gravity and thermal conductivity of the lightweight concrete the further interest should be concentrated in replacing the normal concrete by the lightweight aggregate concrete.
