Working as nurses, authors found that some patients were not content with their hospital life. Some patients wanted to move to another ward, and others complained about their ward atmosphere. In spite of patients' discomfort, nurses didn't know what made some patients complain about their ward. So, authors tried to find factors that influence atmosphere of hospital wards of the neurosurgery patients. To know the atmosphere of wards, authors selected five neurosurgery ward of a university hospital in Seoul. Observation took a month. An author observed using molar approach, in the morning, in the day time, and in evening time. Authors used concealment /no intervention technique. An author checked condition of people in the wards, and observed their verbal and nonverbal communication behavior their activities and environmental characteristics, and interpreted their meaning through ethnographic research methodology by Spradly. Authors found there was an important factors that influence the atmosphere of ward. It was a human and his attitude. At least one person who was willing to help others made ward atmosphere better. Helping others physically whenever needed, sup-porting the depressed emotionally, offering foods, or talking to others friendly brought good atmosphere. On the contrary, if everyone was indiffernt to others, the atmosphere became cold. Self-centered or selfish behaviors such as occupying too much area, using the toilet too long, covering other's suction bottle without permission and seeing others delicate or urinate were hurtful. In addition to the attitude of patients and their families, unkindness of medical teams including nurses and doctors and tasteless meal caused bad ward atmosphere. Based on this research finding, authors suggest the followings. A For the better atmosphere of ward 1. Nurses should try to make the ward atmosphere better by introducing new patient to older ones. 2. Every ward should have dividing curtains to keep patient's privacy. 3. All hospital personnel should be kind enough to make patients feel that they are repected. 4. Hospital should serve high quality meals to patients. 5. Patients had better stay with those in the similar condition. B. For the future studies 1. Repeated researches are necessary to check reliability of this results. 2. Researches for patients in different area such as ICU, or hemodialysis unit are necessary.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to provide basic data for development of a nursing intervention program needed in living successfully in elderly women's later years by examining the relationship among depression, death anxiety, and quality of life of elderly women. Methods: Subjects were 115 elderly women over 65 years old who were capable of verbal/nonverbal communication and could understand/answer the questionnaire in H region. Data collection was conducted after receiving written consent using a structured questionnaire. The data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient using the SPSS 12.0/WIN program. No significant correlation was observed between depression and death anxiety however, depression showed negative correlation (r=-.448, p<.001) with quality of life and death anxiety also showed negative correlation (r=-.219, p<.05) with quality of life. Conclusion: We can predict that depression and death anxiety negatively affect quality of life of elderly women.
Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by impairments in social interaction and verbal and nonverbal communication. Purpose: Determine the association between use of assisted reproduction technology (ART) and the risk of ASD among children. Methods: This case-control study included 300 participants (100 cases, 200 controls). The control group included women with a child aged 2-10 years without ASD, while the cases were women with a child aged 2-10 years with ASD. We used a researcher-made questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Stata ver. 14 at the 0.05 significance level. Results: In the univariate analysis, there was significant association between child sex, delivery mode, history of preterm delivery, history of using ART, and maternal age at child's birth and the risk of ASD. After the adjustment for other variables, this association was significant for male sex (2.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11-4.31; P=0.001) and history of using ART (4.03; 95% CI, 1.76-9.21; P=0.001). Therefore, after the adjustment for confounder variables, there was no significant association between ART and the risk of ASD among children (4.98; 95% CI, 0.91-27.30; P=0.065). Conclusion: After the adjustment for other variables, risk factors for ASD were male sex and history preterm delivery. Thus, there was no significant association between ART and the risk of ASD among children.

In this study, we analyzed the process of the housing reflecting the self, based on the qualitative data that people describe their thoughts about their housing in social media 'online-housewarming'. Especially, based on the precedent study that modern self is established on continuous selection behavior, we focused on the selection behavior of the self and the role of the housing that affected it through the narrative. Each narrative component corresponds to the self-establishment process of modern people, identified through precedent study. We can confirm the existing internal criteria changing into new internal criteria through accumulation, interaction and nonverbal communication of selection by housing. Housing has been involved in the selection behavior of self throughout the narrative. From this, it can be seen that the thought of the self and housing are identified in three ways. In 'Online-Housewarming', (1) Housing equates with the self, in the sense that housing is a physical entity in which one's own choices are accumulated (2) People perceive the change of choice caused by the realistic constraints of housing as their interaction with housing. (3) People relate the opinions of others about housing with the opinions about their own self. In contemporary society, house reforming process is a process of mediating the self and the external world based on the selection behavior and affects the establishment of self.
The users of a chatbot messenger can be better engaged in the conversation if they feel intimacy with the chatbot. This can be achieved by the chatbot's effective expressions of human emotions to chatbot users. Thus motivated, this study aims to identify the appropriate emotional expressions of a chatbot that make people feel the social presence of the chatbot. In the background research, we obtained that facial expression is the most effective way of emotions and movement is important for relationship emersion. In a survey, we prepared moving text, moving gestures, and still emoticon that represent five emotions such as happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, and anger. Then, we asked the best way for them to feel social presence with a chatbot in each emotion. We found that, for an arousal and pleasant emotion such as 'happiness', people prefer moving gesture and text most while for unpleasant emotions such as 'sadness' and 'anger', people prefer emoticons. Lastly, for the neutral emotions such as 'surprise' and 'fear', people tend to select moving text that delivers clear meaning. We expect that this results of the study are useful for developing emotional chatbots that enable more effective conversations with users.
The purpose of this study is to produce visual content for effective education of Passive verbs and Causative verbs in Korean language education for foreigners. Passive verbs and causative verbs are contents that must be taught to intermediate level learners. However, it is recognized as a difficult item for both learners and Korean teachers because the realization pattern is complicated, and there is no rule to explain the combination relationship between the action and the instruction by suffix. In this article, the use of nonverbal information that can improve the learning effect was considered. Providing verbal and non-verbal information together in language education can be expected to improve learners' communication skills. In particular, visual content is non-verbal information that can positively affect memory enhancement, playback, and transition. Therefore, this study attempted to plan and produce picture cards as visual materials. The picture card, produced with a focus on the correct education of Korean Passive verbs, will efficiently and significantly make Korean Passive verbs and Causative verbs teaching and learning by suffixes.

Infants utilize crying as a non-verbal means of communication [1]. However, deciphering infant cries presents challenges. Extensive research has been conducted to interpret infant cry audios [2,3]. This paper proposes the classification of infant cries using 3D feature vectors augmented with various audio data techniques. A total of 5 classes (belly pain, burping, discomfort, hungry, tired) are employed in the study dataset. The data is augmented using 5 techniques (Pitch, Tempo, Shift, Mixup-noise, CutMix). Tempo, Shift, and CutMix augmentation techniques demonstrated improved performance. Ultimately, applying effective data augmentation techniques simultaneously resulted in a 17.75% performance enhancement compared to models using single feature vectors and original data.
This study investigated dialog sequence prototype that was the structure of communication, which could be shown in family counseling conversation between therapists and clients. The study was intended to review the process stages of family counseling through literature review, and divided functional phases into 'atmosphere formation phase', 'family evaluation phase', 'persuasion phase of cognitive change', 'confirmation phase of change experience', and 'termination phase'. The study selected two family therapists and 30 clients for research objects. They allowed data collections for the study after the explanation about the research objects. The transcribers were trained by the consent of transcription, which used particular symbol for verbal and nonverbal contents in conversation. The transcribed data were analyzed by dialog grammar, one of the linguistic dialog analysis method developed by Hundsnurscher(1994). This study described and explained dialog sequence prototype that displayed in conversation between family therapist and client through the total sessions in family therapy. The study found three types of dialog sequence prototype in 'atmosphere formation phase', eight types in 'family evaluation phase', nine types in 'persuasion phase of cognitive change', eight types in 'confirmation phase of change experience', and eight types of 'termination phase'. Even if the dialog sequence prototype mentioned above cannot be applied to the process of family therapy at its face value, these findings may contribute to beginners in counseling and graduate students majoring family therapy to do practice in counseling. The research has a limitation in which the study investigated dialog sequence prototype of conversation in two persons. Future research needs to include dialog sequence prototype of conversation among more than three persons. Specifically, when a family therapist do family counseling, he/she treats more than three family members as usual. Therefore, the researchers hope that future study investigates dialog sequence prototype between therapist and client, client and client, among therapist, client and other family members.
Music has a vital meaning in peoples' lives, mostly as a communication medium for thoughts and feelings. Because music is nonthreatening and nonjudgmental, its viability works for everyone. The purpose of this research is firstly to compare the effectiveness of existing social rehabilitation program and music integrated social rehabilitation program for people with mental retardation. Secondly, the study purported to find out if the music integrated social rehabilitation program was effective, then how various musical activities can assist communication and expression, and further assist social interactions among the people with mental retardation. The data were collected using Emotions Assessment Tool, Social Skills Assessment, and Skills development in Music were used. Also, verbal contents, voices, gestures, nonverbal expressions were observed and analyzed. As the result, it is shown that the music integrated social rehabilitation program has enhanced communicative and expressive skills of adults with mental retardation, and further improved social interactive skills. This implies that music had positive effects to the mental patients on their social relationship activities, than the program without music integration. The results support previous findings that music can be an effective communicative and expression tool.
Collaboration has become essential in the product design process due to internationalized and specialized business environments. This study presents a real-time collaborative 3D design workspace for distributed designers, focusing on the development and the evaluation of new interaction techniques supporting nonverbal communication such as awareness of participants, shared manipulation and tele-presence. Requirements were identified in terms of shared objects, shared workspaces and awareness through literature reviews and an observational study. An Augmented Reality based collaborative design workspace was developed, in which two main interaction techniques, Turn-table and Virtual Shadow, were incorporated to support shared manipulation and tele-presence. Turn-table provides intuitive shared manipulation of 3D models and physical cues for awareness of remote participants. Virtual shadow supports natural and continuous awareness of location, gestures and pointing of partners. A lab-based evaluation was conducted and the results showed that interaction techniques effectively supported awareness of general pointing and facilitated discussion in 3D model reviews. The workspace and the interaction techniques can facilitate more natural communication and increase the efficiency of collaboration on virtual 3D models between distributed participants (designer-designer, engineer, or modeler) in collaborative design environments.
