Analysis of NOx Emissions in Thrbulent Nonpremixed Hydrogen-Air Jet Flames with Coaxial Air (동축 수소 확산화염에서의 NOx 생성 분석)

  • The characteristics of NOx emissions in pure hydrogen nonpremixed flames with coaxial air are analyzed numerically for the three model cases of coaxial air flames classified by varying coaxial air velocity and/or fuel velocity. In coaxial air flames, the flame length is reduced by coaxial air and can be represented as a function of the ratio of coaxial air to fuel velocity. Coaxial air decreases flame reaction zone, resulting in reducing flame residence time significantly. Finally, the large reduction of EINOx is achieved by the decrease of the flame residence time. It is found that because coaxial air can break down the flame self-similarity law, appropriate scaling parameters, which are different from those in the simple jet flames, are recommended. In coaxial air flames, the flame residence time based on the flame volume produces better results than that based on a cube of the flame length. And some portion of deviations from the 1/2 scaling law by coaxial air may be due to the violation of the linear relationship between the flame volume and the flame reaction zone.

  • An experimental study on the characteristics of stability of propane turbulent nonpremixed jet flames discharged normal to air free-streams with uniform velocity profile is conducted. Experimental observations are focused on the flame shape, the stability considering two kinds of flame, lift-off distance, and the flame length according to velocity ratio. In order to investigate the mixing structure of the flame base at the lower limit, we employ the RMS technique and measure the species concentration by a gas chromatography. In the results of the stability curve and lifted flame, it is fecund that the dependency of nozzle diameter is closely related to the large-scale vortical structure representing counter-rotating vortices pair. Also, the detailed discussion on the phenomenon of blowout due to this large vortical motion, is provided.

  • The present study has focused on numerical investigation on the flame structure, flame lift-off and stabilization in the partially premixed turbulent lifted jet flames. Since the lifted jet flames have the partially premixed nature in the flow region between nozzle exit and flame base, level set approach is applied to simulate the partially premixed turbulent lifted jet flames for various fuel jet velocities and co-flow velocities. The flame stabilization mechanism and the flame structure near flame base are presented in detail. The predicted lift-off heights are compared with the measured ones.

  • Rayleigh scattering and laser induced predissociative fluorescence are employed for capturing two-dimensional images of temperature and species concentration in a laminar nonpremixed flame of a diluted hydrogen jet. Rayleigh scattering cross-sections are experimentally obtained at 248nm. Dispersed LIPF spectra of OH and O₂ are also measured in a flame in order to confirm the excitation of single vibronic state of OH and O₂are excited on the P₁(8) line of the A ²∑+ (v'=3) - X ²∏(v˝=0) band and R(17) line of the Schumann-Runge band B ³∑u- (v'=0) - X ³∑g-∏(v˝=6), respectively. Fluorescence spectra of OH and Hot O₂ are captured and two-dimensional images of the hydrogen flame field are successfully visualized.

Experimental Study on Flame-Vortex Interactions in Turbulent Hydrogen Non-premixed Flames with Coaxial Air (동축공기 수소확산 화염에서의 화염과 와류의 상호작용 실험연구)

  • This paper investigates the effects of acoustic forcing on NOx emissions and mixing process in the near field region of turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames. The resonance frequency was selected to force the coaxial air jet acoustically, because the resonance frequency is effective to amplify the forcing amplitude and reduce NOx emissions. When the resonance frequency is acoustically excited, a streamwise vortex is formed in the mixing layer between the coaxial air jet and coflowing air. As the vortex develops downstream, it entrains both ambient air and combustion products into the coaxial air jet to mix well. In addition, the strong vortex pulls the flame surface toward the coaxial air jet, causing intense chemical reaction. Acoustic excitation also causes velocity fluctuations of coaxial air jet as well as fuel jet but, the maximum value of centerline fuel velocity fluctuation occurs at the different phases of $\Phi$=$180^{\circ}$ for nonreacting case and $\Phi$=$0^{\circ}$ for reacting case. Since acoustic excitation enhances the mixing rate of fuel and air, the line of the stoichiometric mixture fraction becomes narrow. Finally, acoustic forcing at the resonance frequency reduces the normalized flame length by 15 % and EINOx by 25 %, compared to the flame without acoustic excitation.

  • Characteristics of turbulent lifted flames in coflow jets with the varying initial temperature have recently been investigated about only propane case diluted by nitrogen. The investigation has firstly improved a premixed flame model and a large scale mixing model among competing theories on the stabilization mechanism of turbulent flame to be suitable for a high temperature condition. In this research, about methane with good availability to apply for a practical combustor as clean fuel, its characteristics of turbulent nonpremixed flame have been studied experimentally. The results have shown an effectiveness of the premixed flame model and the large scale mixing model considered initial temperature variation. Additionally, considering the axial distance where the mean fuel concentration falls below the stoichiometric level along the center line of the jet according to diluting nitrogen, the premixed flame model have more accurately been improved.

  • This study investigates the nonpremixed $H_2/CO$-air turbulent flames numerically. The turbulent combustion process is represented by a reaction progress variable model coupled with the presumed joint probability function. In the present study, the turbulent combustion model is applied to analyze the nonadiabatic flames by introducing additional variable in the transport equation of enthalpy and the radiative heat loss is calculated using a local, geometry independent model. Calculations are compared with experimental data in terms of temperature, and mass fraction of major species, radical, and NO. Numerical results indicate that the lower and higher fuel-jet velocity flames have the distinctly different flame structures and NO formation characteristics in the proximity of the outer core vortex zone. The present model correctly predicts the essential features of flame structure and the characteristics of NO formation in the bluff-body stabilized flames. The effects of nonequilibrium chemistry and radiative heat loss on the thermal NO formation are discussed in detail.

  • The effects of periodic fuel supply on the nonpremixed flame stability and soot formation were experimentally studied. A solenoid valve was used to control the period of fuel supply. The laser induced incandescence technique was used to visualize cool: volume fraction profile. The flame base shape was changed significantly by the fuel supply period and partially by the fuel flowrates. The portion of bluish flame near the flame base became larger as the period increased. When the period was long, two flames coexisted within one period. It seemed that the characteristic of flame stability were repeated with 4.68m change of fuel supply line length. The soot mass measurements and soot volume fraction measurements revealed that the maximum suppression of soot by the perioic fuel supply was approximately 75% , which occurred when the occurred when the fuel supply period was relatively long.

  • The characteristics of nonpremixed oxy-fuel flame in a multi-jet burner were experimentally and numerically investigated. The overall flow rate of fuel and oxygen was fixed, and the oxygen feeding ratio (OFR) was varied by 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75. The results of numerical simulation were compared with the measured results which are temperature profile and direct flame observation. The probability density function (PDF) model was applied accounting to the description between turbulence and chemistry, and standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model was used for turbulent flow field. Equilibrium assumption is very reasonable due to fast chemistry of the oxy-fuel combustion. Thus, the equilibrium calculation based on Gibbs free energy minimization was guaranteed to generate the solution of the oxy-fuel combustion. The result was obtained by numerical simulation. The predicted radial temperature profiles were in good agreement with the measured results. The flame length was shorten and was intensified with the decrease of OFR because the mixture of fuel and oxidizer are fast mixed and burnt. The maximum temperature became lower as the OFR increased, as a consequence of large flame surface area.
