Water Quality Improvement of Inflow Stream in Estuary using Wetland and Pond (습지와 유수지를 이용한 하구담수호 유입하천의 수질개선)

  • Wetland systems are widely accepted natural water purification systems around the world in nonpoint sources pollution control. In this study, the field experiment to reduce nonpoint source pollution loadings from agricultural drainage and polluted stream waters using wetland and pond system was performed. The removal rate of $BOD_5$, TSS, T-N and T-P during growing season was 7.2%, 64.3%, 57.0%, and 60.3%, respectively. And removal rate of $BOD_5$, TSS, T-N and T-P during winter was -49.5%, -56.1 %, 30.5%, and 47.1%, respectively. In this study, pond-wetland system is more effective than wetland-pond system to remove nutrient.

Determination of Detention Basin Size for NPS Control in TMDL Area (수질오염총량관리제하에서 친환경 개발사업을 위한 자연형 비점저감시설의 규모 산정)

  • Since 2000, environmental policies and regulations in Korea are rapidly changing to TMDL(Total Maximum Daily Load) and nonpoint source control. This is due to bad water quality in drinking water sources. Although many environmental facilities having high removal efficiency are constructed and applied in nationwide for controling various pollutants from wastewaters, the water quality in rivers is worse and worse because of nonpoint pollution. In fact, TMDL is a new environmental regulation controling total daily loadings from watershed areas. Actually, the nonpoint pollutant is originated from various landuses and its control is based on TMDL regulation. Therefore, this research is performed to determine the size of detention basin to control nonpoint pollutants from resort developing areas. The detention basin is one of best management practices, which is useful for controling pollutants and flooding from the developing areas. However, it should be designed and constructed with cost effective method. Recent 10 years rainfall data are used to determine the size of detention basin. The cost effective size is determined to 7.4mm accumulated rainfall.

Behavior of Nutrients in Runoff Water from a Small Rural Watershed (농촌 소유역 유출수에서의 영양염류의 거동)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of behavior of nutrients such as TN (Total nitrogen), TDN (Total dissolved nitrogen), TP (Total phosphorus) TDP (Total dissolved phosphorous) in runoff water from a nonpoint source dominated watershed ($6.67\;km^2$). Regular and intensive flow measurement and water sampling were taken during two years (February 2002 to January 2004) in the Ingyeong River, a tributary of the Han River. The mean concentrations of nutrients during rainy days were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those during dry days. The mean TDN/TN ratio in rainy days (95%) is almost identical to that in dry days (96%), but mean TDP/TP ratio in rainy days (24%) significantly decreased compared with that in dry days (66%), suggesting that dominant form of TP is shifted from dissolved form to particulate form. Accordingly, the measures (.eg. filter strips, cover crops) to reduce soil erosion for fallow upland in the rainy season should be taken to control particulate phosphorous.

  • The 21st century is that both human and environment live together. The advancing knowledge concerning our environment instigates a change in understanding about the physical surroundings. The construction field particularly induces significant improvements that are environmental-friendly. To convene this demand, several manuals and guidelines related to the environmental issues have been enacted and amended. Especially the manuals and guidelines issued from Ministry of Environment (MOC) and Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT) is requiring the addition of environmental knowledge in construction technology. Recently, environmental assessments and advanced environmental measures in various kinds of construction are persuasively been carried out. The policy of Total Maximum Daily Load is the one more reason for the revisions of the manual and guideline, which is really requiring the addition of the environmental knowledge in construction technology. Therefore, this research is focusing on revising the manuals and guidelines related to road construction and maintenance works issued from MOCT.

Early Stage Performance of Constructed Wetland System for Nonpoint Source Pollution Control (비점원오염 제어를 위한 인공습지의 초기단계 연구)

  • The field scale experiment was performed to examine the performance of the constructed wetland for nonpoint source (NPS) pollution loading reduction. Four sets (0.88 ha each) of wetland and pond system were used. After three growing seasons of the wetland construction, plant coverage increased to about 90% even without plantation from bare soil surfaces at the initial stage. During the start up period of constructed wetlands, lower water levels should be maintained to avoid flooding newly plants, if wetland plants are to start from germinating seeds. The average removal rate of $BOD_5$, TSS, T-N and T-P during the first two years was 5.6%, 46.6%, 45.7%, and 54.8%, respectively. The $BOD_5$ removal rate was low and it might be attributed to the low influent concentration. The early stage of wetland performance demonstrated the effectiveness of water quality improvement and was satisfactory for treating polluted stream waters. From the first-order analysis, T-P was virtually not temperature dependent, and $BOD_5$ and TSS were more temperature dependent than T-N. A pond-wetland system was more effective than a wetland-pond or a wetland alone system in water quality improvement, particularly to reduce T-P. Overall, the wetland system was found to be an adequate alternative for treating a polluted stream water with stable removal efficiency and recommended as a NPS control measures.

Analysis of Nonpoint Source Pollutants in Urban Stormwater Runoff (강우시 도시지역 비점오염물질의 하천 유입 산정)

  • Non-point source control has been issued and intensively studied for the control of water quality in streams and rivers. In this study, non-point source pollutants monitoring was conducted at the end of five small streams which were connected to a main stream in three stages including Phase I (one hr before the rainfall), Phase II (one hr after the rainfall), and Phase III (six hrs after the rainfall). For all five small streams, the concentrations and loading rates of non-point source pollutants significantly increased due to the rainfall. As a result of this, priority control streams and priority pollutants were suggested to prepare for future plans of the non-point source control.

  • Lake water quality assessment information is useful to anyone involved in lake management, from lake owners to lake associations. It provides lake water quality criteria, which can improve the ways how to manage out lake resources and how to measure current conditions. It also provides a knowledge base so that the lakes can be protected and restored. Here, the Freshwater Lake Water Quality Management System(FLAQUM) was developed. The results of FLAQUM application by scenario proved that pollutant load at rainfall by the nonpoint sources was much more than normal times at rainfall. From the result of Scenario I (pollutant source increase case), the concentrations of Boryeong freshwater lake were BOD 9.43mg/L, T-N 4.53 mg/L and T-P 0.21 mg/L, respectively, and those values exceed the standard of agricultural water. And in case of Scenario I and II(the present case) excluding Scenario III (pollutant source decrease case), all of T-N and T-P are either mesotrophication or eutrophication, on the other hand when 60% of pollution source is removed, the concentrations of Scenario III were BOD 3.21 mg/L, T-N 0.95 mg/L, T-P 0.11 mg/L, respectively, and which satisfies the standard of agricultural water quality.

The Effect of Connected Bioretention on Reduction of Surface Runoff in LID Design (LID 설계시 식생체류지간 연결에 의한 강우유출수 저감 효과분석)

  • Recently, Low Impact Development (LID) is being used in Korea to control urban runoff and nonpoint source pollution. In this study, we evaluated the reduction of surface runoff from a study area, as the effect of connecting three bioretention as LID-BMP. Surface runoff and storage volume of bioretention is estimated by the Curve Number (CN) method. In this study, the storage volume of bioretention is divided by the volume of surface runoff and precipitation which directly enters the bioretention. The ratio of captured surface runoff volume to storage volume is highly influenced by the ratio of drainage area to surface area of bioretention. The high bioretention surface area-to-drainage area ratio captures more surface runoff. The ratio of 1.2 captures 51~54% of the total surface runoff, ranging from 5-30cm of bioretention depth; a ratio of 6.2 captures 81~85%. Three connected bioretentions could therefore captures much more runoff volume, ranging from $35.8{\sim}167.3m^3$, as compared to three disconnected bioretentions at their maximum amount of precipitation with non-effluent from the connecting three bioretentions. Hence, connecting LID-BMPs could improve the removal efficiencies of surface runoff volume and nonpoint source pollution.

Characteristics of NPS Pollutants and Treatment of Stormwater Runoff in Paved Area during a Storm (강우시 포장지역의 비점오염물질 유출 및 저감특성)

  • The increase of pollutant loadings from nonpoint sources affect the water quality of the major rivers in Korea. Consequently, the need for managing the nonpoint source (NPS) pollution becomes the main concern of the Korean Ministry of Environment (MOE). Recently, the policy was changed from pollutant concentration-restricting approach to the total maximum daily load (TMDL) approach to improve the water quality and protect the aquatic ecosystem. Part of the program is the construction of Best Management Practice (BMP) pilot facilities basically to control NPS. Most of the BMPs adopted were foreign technologies which could not be properly employed in the country due to some limitations such as climate, watershed characteristics, etc. In other words, to be able to apply the BMPs, research on its applicability is necessary. In this study, a three-year monitoring has been conducted to assess the treatment performance of the BMP installed in highway toll plaza and parking lot. The data gathered aid in the characterization of NPS pollutants in runoff and estimation of the pollutant removal efficiency of the BMP. The results will be used for the future implementation of BMP in different land uses as well as for the determination of optimum operation and maintenance.

A Study on BASINS/WinHSPF for Evaluation of Non-point Source Reduction Efficiency in the Upstream of Nam-Han River Watershed (BASINS/WinHSPF를 이용한 남한강 상류 유역의 비점오염원 저감효율평가)

  • Window interface to Hydrological Simulation Program-FORTRAN (WinHSPF) developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was applied to the upstream of Nam-Han river watershed to examine its applicability for loading estimates in watershed scale and to evaluate non-point source control scenarios using BMPRAC in WinHSPF. The WinHSPF model was calibrated and verified for water flow using Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT, 3 stations, 2003~2005) and water qualities using Ministry of Environment (MOE, 5 station, 2000~2006). Water flow and water quality simulation results were also satisfactory over the total simulation period. But outliers were occurred in the time series data of TN and TP at some regions and periods. Therefore, it required more profit calibration process for more various parameters. As a result, all the study was performed within the expectation considering the complexity of the watershed, pollutant sources and land uses intermixed in the watershed. The estimated pollutant load for annual average about $BOD_5$, T-N and T-P respectively. Nonpoint source loading had a great portion of total pollutant loading, about 86.5~95.2%. In WinHSPF, BMPRAC was applied to evaluate non-point source control scenarios (constructed wetland, wet detention ponds and infiltration basins). All the scenarios showed efficiency of non-point source removal. Overall, the HSPF model is adequate for simulating watersheds characteristics, and its application is recommended for watershed management and evaluation of best management practices.
