We investigate the effects of solutal convection on the crystal growth rate in a horizontal configuration for diffusive-convection conditions and purely diffusion conditions achievable in a low gravity environment for a nonlinear thermal gradient. It is concluded that the solutally-driven convection due to the disparity in the molecular weights of the component A $(Hg_2Br_2)$ and B (CO) is stronger than thermally-driven convection for both the nonlinear and the linear thermal profiles, corresponding to $Gr_t= 8.5{\times}10^3,\; Gr_s = 1.05{\times}10^5$. For both solutal and thermal convection processes, the growth rates for the linear thermal profile (conducting walls) are greater than for the nonlinear case. With the temperature humps, there are found to be observed in undersaturation for diffusive-convection processes ranging from $D_{AB}$ = 0.087 to 0.87. For the vertical configurations, the diffusion mode is so much dominated that the growth rate and interfacial distribution is nearly regardless of the gravitational accelerations. Also, the diffusion mode is predominant over the convection for the gravity levels less than 0.1 $g_0$ for the horizontally oriented configuration.

Experiments of quenching were made with cylindrical specimens of carbon steel S45C of diameters from 12 to 30mm were performed. The specimens were heated by electric furnace and quenched by immersion method. In order to analyze the temperature profile(cooling curves) of carbon steel including the latent heat of phase transformation, nonlinear heat conduction problem was calculated by the numerical method of inverse heat conduction problem using the apparent heat capacity method. The difference between the calculated and the experimented cooling curves was caused by the latent heat of phase transformation, and the effects of the latent heat were especially manifest at the cooling curves of center of specimens. The temperature and the quantity of the latent heat of phase transformation depend on the cooling speed at A sub(1) transformation point, and the region for cooling speed to become zero was caused by the latent heat of phase transformation.

The temperature hump is found to be most efficient in suppressing parasitic nucleation. With the temperature humps, there are found to be observed in undersaturations along the transport path for convective-diffusive processes ranging from $D_{AB}$ = 0.0584 $\textrm{cm}^2$/s to 0.584 $\textrm{cm}^2$/s, axial positions from 0 to 7.5 cm. With decreasing Ar = 5 to 3.5, the temperature difference is increased because of the imposed nonlinear temperature profile but the rate is decreased. For 2 $\leq$ Ar $\leq$ 3.5, the rate is increased with the aspect ratio as well as the temperature difference. Such an occurrence of a critical aspect ratio is likely to be due to the effect of sidewall and much small temperature difference. The rate is decreased exponentially with the aspect ratio for 2 $\leq$ Ar $\leq$ 10. Also, the rate is exponentially decreased with partial pressure of component B, P for 1 $\leq$ P $\leq$ 100 Torr.$ B/ $\leq$ 100 Torr.

In the present study, squeezing flow of micropolar nanofluid between parallel infinite disks in the presence of magnetic field perpendicular to plane of the disks is taken into account. The constitutive equations that govern the flow configuration are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential with the help of suitable similarity transforms. HAM package BVPh2.0 has been employed to solve the nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations. Effects of different emerging parameters like micropolar parameter K, squeezed Reynolds number R, Hartmann number M, Brownian motion parameter Nb, thermophoresis parameter Nt, Lewis number Le for dimensionless velocities, temperature distribution and concentration profile are also discussed graphically. In the presence of strong and weak interaction (i.e. n = 0 and n = 0.5), numerical values of skin friction coefficient, wall stress coefficient, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number are presented in tabulated form. To check the validity and reliability of the developed algorithm BVPh2.0 a numerical investigation is also a part of this study.
In a MEMS(micro-electro mechanical system), the fluid may slip near the surface of a solid and have a discontinuous temperature profile. A numerical prediction in this slip flow region can provide a reasonable guide for the design and fabrication of micro devices. The compressible Navier-Stokes equation with Maxwell/smoluchowski boundary condition is solved for two simple systems; couette flow and pressure driven flow in a long channel. We found that the couette flow could be regarded as an incompressible system in low speed regions. For the pressure driven flow system, we observed nonlinear distribution of pressure in the long channel and numerical results showed a good agreement with the experimental results.
The present work is an attempt to develop a simple and accurate finite element formulation for the assessment of thermal shock/thermally induced vibrations in pretwisted and tapered functionally graded material thin (FGM) blades obtained from Voigt and local representative volume elements (LRVE) homogenization models, based on neutral surface approach. The neutral surface of the FGM blade does not coincide with its mid-surface. A finite element model (FEM) is developed using first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the FGM turbine blade is modelled according to the shallow shell theory. The top and the bottom layers of the FGM blade are made of pure ceramic and pure metal, respectively and temperature-dependent material properties are functionally graded in the thickness direction, the position of the neutral surface also depends on the temperature. The material properties are estimated according to two different homogenization models viz., Voigt or LRVE. The top layer of the FGM blade is subjected to high temperature and the bottom surface is either thermally insulated or kept at room temperature. The solution of the nonlinear profile of the temperature in the thickness direction is obtained from the Fourier law of heat conduction in the unsteady state. The results obtained from the present FEM are compared with the benchmark examples. Next, the effect of angle of twist, intensity of thermal shock, variable chord and span and volume fraction index on the transient response due to thermal shock obtained from the two homogenization models viz., Voigt and LRVE scheme is investigated. It is shown that there can be a significant difference in the transient response calculated by the two homogenization models for a particular set of material and geometric parameters.
The procedure using equivalent time at reference temperature has been assessed for the estimation of kinetic parameters with experimental data. Kinetic studies of nonenzymatic browning reaction in model and food system were carried out with linearly increasing temperature method. These kinetic parameters, n, $k_{ref}$ and $E_a$ of the systems were evaluated from original data in one step by nonlinear least square regression. The one step procedure yielded efficiently accurate parameter estimation. Computer simulated data with the kinetic models were well consistent with experimental data (average correlation coefficient=0.96).

A numerical investigation to simulate the selective growth of silicon-germanium quantum-dots via local surface diffusivity enhancement is presented. A nonlinear equation for the waviness evolution of film surface is derived to consider the effects of spatially-varying diffusivity, influenced by a surface temperature profile. Results show that the morphology of the initially planar film shapes into an undulated surface upon perturbation, and a steady-state solution describes a fully grown quantum-dot. The present study points toward a fabrication technique that can obtain selectivity for self-assembly.
A 4-unknown shear deformation theory is applied to investigate the vibration of functionally graded plates under thermal environment. The plate is fabricated from a functionally graded material mixed of ceramic and metal with continuously varying material properties through the plate thickness. Three types of thermal loadings, uniform, linear and nonlinear temperature rises along the plate thickness are taken into account. The present theory contains four unknown functions as against five or more in other higher order shear deformation theories. The through-the-thickness distributions of transverse shear stresses of the plate are considered to vary parabolically and vanish at upper and lower surfaces. The present model does not require any problem dependent shear correction factor. Analytical solutions for the free vibration analysis are derived based on Fourier series that satisfy the boundary conditions (Navier's method). Benchmark solutions are firstly considered to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed model. Comparisons with the solutions available in literature revealed the good capabilities of the present model for the simulations of vibration responses of FG plates. Some parametric studies are carried out for the frequency analysis by varying the volume fraction profile and the temperature distribution across the plate thickness.
We prepared the side-chain type nonlinear optical NPP(N-(6-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol) polymer films by spin coating method. Ellipsometric spectra were in situ collected by using spectroscopic phase modulated ellipsometer while the NPP polymer films were being corona poled at the temperature above glass transition. We calculated film thickness and the refractive index dispersion by modeling the spectro-ellipsometry data in transparent region. We also calculated the refractive index and the extinction coefficient of the polymer films by numerically inverting the spectro-ellipsometry data in absorbing region, while the previously determined film thickness was used. The independently determined extinction coefficient spectra from the analysis of transmission spectra were compared with those by spectro-ellipsometry and they showed an excellent agreement with each other. From the analysis of the complex refractive index change of the NPP polymer thin films induced by the corona poling, we could determine the vertical complex refractive index and the horizontal complex refractive index separately. Using the volume fraction of the vertical component f⊥, the degree of poling of poled NPP polymer films was quantitatively addressed. It is suggested that the present method can be used to quantitatively address the degree of poling in an absolute manner and to depth profile the poled fraction of thick polymer films. It will be useful to understand the structural change of polymer films and hence the poling mechanism during the poling process.
