A signal processing method for white light interferometry (WLI), which performs a series of analog signal processing steps to locate the central interference fringe position at high speed: is developed and applied to a WLI temperature sensor system. We found that the new method has random walk of $0.019^{\circ}C/\sqrt{Hz}$ with good linearity. However, the temperature change in the path-matching interferometer results in drift of the measured sensor output. The temperature dependence of drift in the WLI temperature sensor system, was calculated to be $1.42{\mu}m/^{\circ}C$. It is also found that the relationship between the peak spacing in the interferogram and the spacing measured by the method can be nonlinear when the fringe spacing is comparable to the coherence length of the source.
We have studied the generation of an array of dark spatial solitons in a self-deforcusing medium. Unlike a single fundamental dark spatial soliton, we show numerically that the generation of an array of dark spatial solitons from a spatially sinusoidal input beam needs an adiabatic amplification of nonlinear refractive index with the beam propagation distance. In experiment, we establish a Mach-Zehnder interferometer for making the sinusoidal input beam and use a cylindrical lens for the adiabatic amplification. We observe that the dark soliton's dip-width becomes narrower and the background intensity distribution becomes flatter with increasing the nonlinearity.

Experimental studies on vibration control of a composite beam with a piezoelectric actuator and an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) have been performed using a neural network controller and an LQG controller. Vibration control performance was investigated in the nonlinear sensing range according to the vibration amplitudes. Using a neuro-controller, adaptive vibration control experiment has been performed for the structure with frequency variations, and its performance is compared with that of an LQG controller. The vibration control results show that the neuro-controller has good performance and robustness with respect to the system parameter variations.

The fiber-optic interferometer which is a powerful application for nondestructive measurement techniques has many advantages such as capability of making portable system, easy optical arrangement, low optical loss. In spite of these advantages, this system has an environmental sensitivity of thermal drifts and vibrations. Against environmental perturbations and nonlinear characteristic of phase modulator, the accurate and fast ${\pi}/2$ phase stepping has been achieved by using zero-crossing detection. CCD camera trigger signal is generated at the 4 zero-crossing points. Our System has achieved up to 100 Hz of image capture speed and 0.6 mrad of accuracy of phase stepping, accuracy.
We demonstrate a frequency-resolved optical grating (FROG) device for measuring the intensity and phase versus time of several-tens-of-picoseconds laser pulses, using a thick nonlinear optical crystal. The huge pulse-front tilt generated by a holographic grating increases the temporal range of the device, which can make a single-shot measurement of laser pulses less than 100 ps in duration. To verify the measurement technique, we generate double pulses using a Michelson interferometer. The measured duration of a single pulse is about 300 fs and the measured maximum delay of two pulses is 60 ps, which implies that the proposed FROG device can measure laser pulses with maximum pulse width of about 120 ps.

A nonlinear ultrasonic parameter is defined by the ratio of displacement amplitude of the fundamental frequency component to that of the second-order harmonic frequency component. In this study, the ultrasonic displacement amplitude of an SUS316 specimen was measured via a piezo-electric-based method to identify the validity of piezo-electric detection method. For comparison, the ultrasonic displacement was also determined via a laser-based Fabry-Pérot interferometer. The experimental results for both measurements were in good agreement. Additionally, the stability of the repeated test results from the piezo-electric method exceeded that of the laser-interferometric method. This result indicated that the piezo-electric detection method can be utilized to measure a nonlinear ultrasonic parameter due to its excellent stability although it involves a complicated process.
A fiber laser of which wavelength was scanned by an intra-cavity FP (Fabry-Perot) filter was used to interrogate a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor array. We calculated the wavelength variation of the fiber laser using quadrature signal processing with an unbalanced M/Z (Mach-Zehnder) interferometer and time-delayed sampling technique. The calculated wavelengths are mapped to corresponding temporal reflection peaks from the sensor array, which enables more accurate and stable interrogation without the problems caused by the FP filter's nonlinear characteristics. Wavelength resolution of ∼20 pm was obtained in our experimental setup, which could have been greatly enhanced with faster phase modulation.

Abstract- In this paper, a new Partial Discharge (PD) detection using Pockels cell was proposed and considerable apparent chaotic characteristics were discussed. For this purpose, PD was generated from needle-plane electrode in air and detecte by optical measuring system using Pockels cell, based on Mach-Zehner interferometer, consisting of He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, 50/50 beam splitter and photo detector. In addition, the presence of chaos of the PD signals has been investigated by examining their means of qualitative and quantitative information. For the former, return map and 3-dimensional strange attractor have been drawn in order to investigate the presence of chaotic characteristics relevant to PD signals, detected through CT and Peckels sensor respectively, in the normalized time series. The presence of strange attractor indicates the existence of fractal structures in it's phase space. For the latter, several dimension values of strange attractor were verified sequentially. Throughout this paper, it is likely that the chaotic characteristics regarding the PD signals under air are verified.
In this paper, new Partial Discharge (PD) detection technique using Pockels cell was proposed and considerable apparent chaotic characteristics were discussed. For this purpose, PD was generated from needle-plane electrode in air and detected by optical measuring system using Pockels cell, based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer, consisting of He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, 50/50 beam splitter and photo detector. A qualitative analysis was carried out by drawing Return map for the normalized time series of the detected PD signals. The results are as follows:(a) Fixed points, between 0.7 and 1.0, are appeared clearly in the right upper area of the return map as the increase in the number of obtained data.(b) Considerable periodicity have been remarked even though exact period and length can not be determined.(c) The self-similarity can be also observed inasmuch as the late paths do not follow the previous ones. Accordingly, exact quantitative analysis such as embedding dimension, fractal dimension, and Lyapunov exponents should be carried out for deducing the quantitative properties regarding PD phenomena.

The use of flip-chip technology has many advantages over other approaches for high-density electronic packaging. ACF (anisotropic conductive film) is one of the major flip-chip technologies, which has short chip-to-chip interconnection length, high productivity, and miniaturization of package. In this study, thermal fatigue lift of ACF bonding flip-chip package has been predicted. Elastic and thermal properties of ACF were measured by using DMA and TMA. Temperature dependent nonlinear hi-thermal analysis was conducted and the result was compared with Moire interferometer experiment. Calculated displacement field was well matched with experimental result. Thermal fatigue analysis was also conducted. The maximum shear strain occurs at the outmost located bump. Shear stress-strain curve was obtained to calculate fatigue life. Fatigue model for electronic adhesives was used to predict thermal fatigue life of ACF bonding flip-chip packaging. DOE (Design of Experiment) technique was used to find important design factors. The results show that PCB CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) and elastic modulus of ACF material are important material parameters. And as important design parameters, chip width, bump pitch and bump width were chose. 2$^{nd}$ DOE was conducted to obtain RSM equation far the choose 3 design parameter. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) for the calculated RSM equation is 0.99934. Optimum design is conducted using the RSM equation. MMFD (Modified Method for feasible Direction) algorithm is used to optimum design. The optimum value for chip width, bump pitch and bump width were 7.87mm, 430$\mu$m, and 78$\mu$m, respectively. Approximately, 1400 cycles have been expected under optimum conditions. Reliability analysis was conducted to find out guideline for control range of design parameter. Sigma value was calculated with changing standard deviation of design variable. To acquire 6 sigma level thermal fatigue reliability, the Std. Deviation of design parameter should be controlled within 3% of average value.
