The volume control method which utilize a pressure node added into a finite shell element can overcome the drawbacks of conventional load control method and displacement control method. In this study, an improved volume control method is introduced for effective analysis of path-dependant behaviors of RC structures subjected to cyclic loading. RC shell structures including RC hollow columns are anlayized by discretizing the structures with layered shell elements and by applying in-plane two dimensional constitutive equations for concrete layers and reinforcement layers of the shell elements. The so-called path dependant volume control method is verified by comparing analysis results with other data including experimental results.
In this study, the crash situations and general crash analysis methods of railway rolling stocks were explained. To calculate the applied load and the maximum stress in the carbody when two aluminum railway vehicles were shunted, the finite element models for the carbody and the coupling system were made. The characteristic curve of draft gear which had a function to reduce impact force was modeled by nonlinear bar elements and the carbody was modeled by shell elements. Two shunting speeds, 5km/h and 8km/h, were considered and the results were analyzed and compared with static analysis case. Also, the aluminum railway vehicle with 60km/h was crashed against rigid wall to examine the global behavior of the carbody.

To overcome the drawbacks of conventional load control method and displacement control method, the so-called volume control method was developed by utilizing a pressure node added into a finite shell element. In this study, an improved volume control method which can analyze path-dependant behaviors of RC shell structures subjected to cyclic loading effectively is developed. RC shell structures are discretized with layered shell elements and in-plane two dimensional constitutive equations for concrete and reinforcements are implemented for each layer of the shell elements. Validity of the so-called path dependant volume control method is also verified by comparing analysis results with other data including experimental results.

This paper presents a time domain method for soil-structure interaction analysis for seismic loadings. It is based on the finite element formulation incorporating analytical frequency-dependent infinite elements for the far-field soil. The dynamic stiffness matrices of the far-field region formulated in frequency domain using the present method can be easily transformed into the corresponding matrices in time domain. Hence the response can be analytical computed in time domain. Example analysis has been carried out to verify the present method for an embedded block in a multi-layered half-space. The present methods can be easily extended to the nonlinear analysis since the response analysis is carried out in time domain.
A high-pressure ball valve was developed, and both the structural strength and sealing performance were assessed based on a nonlinear finite element analysis. Different parts were modeled with solid elements and assembled, taking into account both contact and sliding effects. Three different loading scenarios were analyzed, including a high-pressure closure test and fire and shell test conditions. The structural safety of each part was checked under each loading condition, and the sealing performance was also investigated to validate the performance of the valve.

This article presents a computing procedure developed to predict the torsional strength of axially restrained reinforced concrete beams. This computing procedure is based on a modification of the Variable Angle Truss Model to account for the influence of the longitudinal compressive stress state due to the axial restraint conditions provided by the connections of the beams to other structural elements. Theoretical predictions from the proposed model are compared with some experimental results available in the literature and also with some numerical results from a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis. It is shown that the proposed computing procedure gives reliable predictions for the ultimate behaviour, namely the torsional strength, of axially restrained reinforced concrete beams under torsion.
The inelastic buckling behaviour of continuously restrained two and three-span continuous beams subjected to concentrated loads and uniformly distributed loads are studied in this paper. The restraint type considered in this paper is fully restrained against translation and elastic twist applied at the top flange. These types of restraints are most likely experienced in industrial structures, for example steel-concrete composite beams and half through girders. The buckling analysis of continuous beam consists of two parts, firstly the moment and shear distribution along the member are determined by employing force method and the information is then used for an out-of-plane buckling analysis. The finite element method is incorporated with so-called simplified and the polynomial pattern of residual stress. Owing to the inelastic response of the steel, both the in-plane and out-of-plane analysis, which is treated as being uncoupled, extend into the nonlinear range. This paper presents the results of inelastic lateral-torsional and lateral-distortional buckling load and finally conclusions are drawn regarding the web distortion.

Coiling processes of filaments need precise work and standardization. It is important to maintain equal pitch of filaments. Uniform pitch of filaments is one of the dominant elements of life time and efficiency of bulbs. First coiling process of filament wires is modeled by nonlinear contact problem between filaments and mandrel. Analysis of coiling process using finite element method is conducted to consider manufacturing parameters and pitch distance is calculated under the given conditions. Also image detecting system is developed to inspect uniformity of pitch. This system will be used to inspect quality of filaments during coiling processes.

The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) for torsional strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) single cell box beams has been analyzed considerably by researchers worldwide. However, little attention has been paid to torsional strengthening of multicell box girders in terms of both experimental and numerical research. This paper reports the experimental work in an overall investigation for torsional strengthening of multicell box section RC girders with externally-bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer CFRP strips. Numerical work was carried out using non-linear finite element modeling (FEM). Good agreement in terms of torque-twist behavior, steel and CFRP reinforcement responses, and crack patterns was achieved. The unique failure modes of all the specimens were modeled correctly as well.
The use of Hermite cubic element, as a possible finite element computation of transport equations containing shocks, has been invesigated. In the present paper the hermite cubic elements are applied to both linear and nonlinear scalar one and two dimensional equations. In the one dimensional problems, numerical results by the hermite cubic element show better than those by the linear element, and the steady state solution by the hermite cubic element yields result with good resolution. This fact proves the superiority of the hermite cubic element in space differencing. In two dimensional case, the results by the hermite cubic element shows a boundary instability, and the use of higher order time differencing method may be necessary for fixing the problem.
