In this paper, a method on deducing the capacity spectrum based on nonlinear earthquake response analysis will be introduced. Damage assessment of general building draws the capacity spectrum through the Push-over analysis and the intersection point of capacity spectrum and demand spectrum is seen as performance point. Push-over analysis is the way to perform static analysis by using the equivalent static load changed from the effect of earthquake and predict the behavior of structures by earthquake. But, this method can not be taken into account in the effects of higher mode and the dynamic characteristic. Therefore, in order to calculate the capacity spectrum under dynamic properties of building. A capacity spectrum from going ahead with the nonlinear earthquake response analysis is suggested.

The accurate peak response estimation of a seismically excited structure with frictional damping system(FDS) is very difficult since the structure with FDS shows nonlinear behavior dependent on the structural period, loading characteristics, and relative magnitude between the frictional force and the excitation load. Previous studies have estimated that by replacing a nonlinear system with an equivalent linear one or by employing the response spectrum obtained based on nonlinear time history and statistical analysis. In the case that on earthquake load is defined with probabilistic characteristics, the corresponding response of the structure with FDS has probabilistic distribution. In this study, nonlinear time history analyses were performed for the structure with FDS subjected to artificial earthquake loads generated using Kanai-Tajimi filter. An equation for the probability density function (PDF) of the displacement response is proposed by adapting the PDF of the normal distribution. Finally, coefficients of the proposed PDF is obtained by regression analysis of the statistical distribution of the time history responses. Finally, the correlation between PDFs and statistical response distribution is presented.

This study develops an empirical prediction equation of spectral acceleration responses of earthquakes which can induce structural damages. Ground motion records representing hazards of low-to-moderate seismic regions were selected and organized with several influential factors affecting the response spectra. The empirical equation and estimator coefficients for acceleration response spectra were then proposed using a robust nonlinear optimization coupled with a regression analysis. For analytical verification of the prediction equation, response spectra used for low-to-moderate seismic regions were estimated and the predicted results were comparatively evaluated with measured response spectra. As a result, the predicted shapes of response spectra can simulate the graphical shapes of measured data with high accuracy and most of predicted results are distributed inside range of correlation of variation (COV) of 30% from perfectly correlated lines.

In the nonlinear response history analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on the nonlinear response characteristics of structural systems. As the properties of the ground motion, using time history analysis, are interrelated with many factors such as the fault mechanism, the seismic wave propagation from source to site, and the amplification characteristics of the soil, it is difficult to properly select the input ground motions for seismic response analysis. In this paper, the most unfavourable real seismic design ground motions were selected as input motions. The artificial earthquake waves were generated according to these earthquake events. The artificial waves have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake waves, and their overall response spectra are compatible with the seismic design spectrum with 5% of critical viscous damping. It is concluded that the artificial earthquake waves simulated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures.

Recently, the number of seismically isolated bridges increased suddenly since the occurrence of strong earthquakes. However, because isolator lies between pier and girder, the response of the superstructure of seismically isolated bridge may be magnified and induce risk of unseating girder Consequently, the response of girder constitutes a crucial factor in designing bridge. In the case of frictional bearing, the inherent nonlinearity makes the use of former linear response spectrum unable to estimate the maximum response of the bearing, and nonlinear tlme history analysis shall be applied. In this paper, nonlinear response spectrum considering frictional element is established, and simple analysis method using such nonlinear spectrum is proposed to estimate the maximum response of the superstructure.
In order to accurately estimate the seismic behavior of buildings, it is important to consider both nonlinear characteristics of the buildings and the frequency dependency of the soil impedance. Therefore, transform methods of the soil impedance in the frequency domain to the impulse response in the time domain are needed because the nonlinear analysis can not be carried out in the frequency domain. The author has proposed practical transform methods. In this paper, seismic response analyses considering frequency dependent soil impedance in the time domain are shown. First, the formulation of the proposed transform methods is described. Then, the linear and nonlinear earthquake response analyses of a building on 2-layered soil were carried out using the transformed impulse responses. Through these analyses, the validity and efficiency of the methods were confirmed.

In seismic response analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on the nonlinear response characteristics of structures. The characteristics of soil and the locality of the site where those ground motions were recorded affect on the contents of earthquake waves. Therefore, it is difficult to select appropriate input ground motions for seismic response analysis. This study describes a generation of artificial earthquake wave compatible with seismic design spectrum, and also evaluates the seismic response values of multistory reinforced concrete structures by the simulated earthquake motions. The artificial earthquake wave are generated according to the previously recorded earthquake waves in past major earthquake events. The artificial wave have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake wave, and their overall response spectra are compatible with seismic design spectrum with 5% critical viscous damping. The input ground motions applied to this study have identical elastic acceleration response spectra, but have different phase angles. The purpose of this study is to investigate their validity as input ground motion for nonlinear seismic response analysis. As expected, the response quantifies by simulated earthquake waves present better stable than those by real recording of ground motion. It was concluded that the artificial earthquake waves generated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures. It was also found that strength of input ground motions for seismic analysis are suitable to be normalize as elastic acceleration spectra.

Nonlinear responses of structures may be obtained through three different methods. They are time-history analysis techniques, response spectrum method, and R-factor method. The nonlinear response spectrum method is frequently used in the practice, because the time history analysis method is time-consuming and complicated. There are two different approaches in obtaining the nonlinear response spectrum, which results in "constant displacement ductility spectra" and "constant damage spectra", respectively. The nonlinear response spectra of the various time-histories had been computed and the results were comparatively evaluated in this study. The study results showed that the existing constant displacement ductility spectra can induce unconservative design especially for the structures on soft soil base. This unconservatism can be removed by using the newly proposed constant damage spectra.

In the present paper computational simulation of a concrete dam is performed to determine the effect of vertical ground motions on earthquake response of concrete dams. Cyclic and dynamic versions of the plastic-damage model proposed by Lee and Fenves are used to represent micro-crack development and crack opening/closing, which is important mechanism in nonlinear damage analysis of concrete structures subject to strong earthquake loading. The result shows that the vertical component of ground motion effects on final crack patterns and consequently, on displacement response.

As the response spectrum method generally used in the earthquake resistant design is a linear method, the nonlinear behavior of a structure is to be reflected with a specific factor. Such factors are provided in the "Design Criteria for Roadwaybridges"as response modification factors and in the Eurocode 8, Part 2 as behavior factors. In this study a 5-span steel box bridge with single column piers is selected and the behavior factor is determined. The linear time history analyses are carried out with a simple linear model, where the nonlinear behavior of piers leading to the ductile failure mechanism is considered as predetermined characteristic curves.
