  • Dynamic behaviors and stability of an optical disk drive coupled with an automatic ball balancer (ABB) are analyzed by a theoretical approach. The feeding system is modeled a rigid body with six degree-of-freedom. Using Lagrange's equation, we derive the nonlinear equations of motion for a non -autonomous system with respect to the rectangular coordinate. To investigate the dynamic stability of the system in the neighborhood of the equilibrium positions, the monodromy matrix technique is applied to the perturbed equations. On the other hand, time responses are computed by the Runge -Kutta method. We also investigate the effects of the damping coefficient and the position of ABB on the dynamic behaviors of the system.

  • A numerical analysis is conducted to estimate the core expansion and the energy behaviors induced by a core disruptive accident in a sodium-cooled fast reactor. The numerical formulation based on underwater explosion theory is carried out to simulate the core explosion inside the reactor vessel. The transient pressure, temperature and expansion of the core are examined by solving the equation of state and nonlinear governing equation of momentum conservation in one-dimensional spherical coordinates. The energy balance inside the computation domain is examined during the core expansion process. Heat transfer between the core and the sodium coolant, and the bubble rise during the expansion process are briefly investigated.

  • The aerostat dynamic equation of motion has been built including the tether cable dynamic effects. A numerical program to solve the derived equation of motion has been developed. The dynamic motion of the 32m aerostat has been analyzed under discrete gust and continuous turbulence. The aerostat behaviors under discrete gust which represents a deterministic approach for determining design loads for manned aircraft are solved to verify the effect of aerostat mechanical properties on the aerostat dynamic behavior. Continuous turbulences are simulated for each given altitude, translational mean wind velocity and gust intensity. Dynamic behaviors of the 32m aerostat are simulated for each continuous turbulence conditions. Translational and vertical velocity and pitching behavior and tether reaction force are monitored for each simulation.

  • Dynamic behaviors of the Korean High-speed Train(KHST) have been analyzed to investigate the performance on the stability, the safety and the ride comfort. Multi-body dynamics analysis program using Recursive method, called RecurDyn, have been employed in the numerical simulation. To model the wheel-rail contact, the RecurDyn uses its built-in module which uses the square root creep law. The accuracy of the rail module in RecurDyn. however, decreases in the analysis of flange contact because it linearizes the shape of the wheel and rail. To solve this problem, a nonlinear contact theory have been developed that considers the profiles of the wheel and rail. The results show that the KHST still needs more stability. The problem should be solved by the examinations of module and modeling.

  • This paper presents a self-organizing scheme for multi-agent swarm systems based on coupled nonlinear oscillators (CNOs). In this scheme, unicycle robots self-organize to flock and arrange group formation through attractive and repulsive forces among themselves. The main result is the maintenance of flexible and scalable formation. It is also shown how localized distributed controls are utilized throughout group behaviors such as formation and migration. In the paper, the proposed formation ensures safe separation and good cohesion performance among the robots. Several examples show that the proposed method for group formation performs the group behaviors such as reference path following, obstacle avoidance and flocking, and the formation characteristics such as flexibility and scalability, effectively.

  • In this paper, three dimensional static behaviors of the self-anchored and partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridges, with a span of 1400 meters, under wind loading are studied by using a 3D geometrical nonlinear analysis. In this analysis, the bridges both after completion and under construction are dealt with. The wind resistant characteristics of the both cable-stayed systems are made clear. In particular, the characteristics of the partially earth-anchored cable systems, which is expected to be a promising solution for extending the span of the cable-stayed systems further, is presented.

  • Global and local behaviors of a lightly RC shear walls are investigated in this paper. For the sake of cyclic behaviors, nominal ground accelerations of 0.15 g, 0.40 g and 0.55 g which associated with natural periods of the walls are applied as listed in French CAMUS-2000 shake table test. Modified Kent & Park model, Drucker-Prager model for concrete material and $Giufr\acute{e}$-Menegotto-Pinto model for rebar are used for time history analyses using fiber/solids elements respectively. Alternatively, Eulerian beam analysis are discussed by imposing inelastic hinges at the most possible plastic hinge location using modified Takeda's trilinear model with stiffness reduction. Relative displacements, base shears, bending moments of 5-story shear building with 36-tons of mass under bi-lateral seismic excitation are extracted and compared with EC-8, PS-92 and KBC-09 provisions. Multi-scaled degradation process; material damage, elemental fracture and structural failure in turn is discussed in the view of numerical accuracy, efficiency and limitation depending on three different model-based analyses.

  • Longitudinal dynamic behaviors of a bridge system under seismic excitations are examined with various magnitudes of peak ground accelerations. The stiffness degradation due to abutment-soil interaction is considered in the bridge model which may play the major role upon the global dynamic characteristics. The idealized mechanical model for the whole ridge system is proposed by adopting the multiple-degree-of-freedom system which can consider components such as pounding phenomena friction at the movable supports rotational and translational motions of foundations and the nonlinear pier motions. The abutment-soil interaction is simulated by utilizing the one degree-of-freedom system with nonlinear spring. The stiffness degradation of the abutment-soil system is found to increase the relative displacement under moderate seismic excitations.
