  • We propose an acousto-optic technique for the nondestructive evaluation of adhesion properties of a Pt/Ti thin-film interface. Since there are some problems encountered when using prevailing techniques to nondestructively evaluate the interfacial properties of micro/nano-scale thin-films, we applied an interferometer that combined the acoustic and optical methods. This technique is based on the Michelson interferometer but the resultant surface of the thin film specimen makes interference instead of the mirror when the interface is excited from the acoustic transducer at the driving frequency. The thin film shows resonance-like behavior at a certain frequency range, resulting in a low-contrast fringe pattern. Therefore, we represented quantitatively the change in fringe pattern as a frequency spectrum and discovered the possibility that the interfacial adhesion properties of a thin film can be evaluated using the newly proposed technique.

  • Nondestructive sensing of electrospun PYDF web and multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/epoxy composites were investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Electrospinning is a technique used to produce micron to submicron diameter polymeric fibers. Electrospun PVDF web was also evaluated for the sensing properties by micromechanical test and by measurement electrical resistance. CNT composite was especially prepared for high volume contents, 50 vol% of reinforcement. Electrical contact resistivity on humidity sensing was a good indicator for monitoring as for multifunctional applications. Work of adhesion using contact angle measurement was studied to correlate acid-base surface energy between carbon fiber and CNF composites, and will study furher for interfacial adhesion force by micromechanical test.

  • The safety-evaluation of ancient wood structures has been executed with only visual inspection. The application of NDE(nondestructive evaluation) is required because the visual inspection has many restrictions. Among many NDE techniques, the stress wave technique was used in this research. This study focused on evaluating the extent of decay in members of ancient structures, using stress wave nondestructive technique. For application of stress wave technique to ancient structures, the threshold time which divides members into categories according to degree of decay should be determined in advance. Stress wave timer (Metriguard Model 239A) was used in this study, specimens used in this research were the members obtained from six ancient structures. All specimens were identified as Hard Pine(Pinus densiflora S. et Z. or Pinus thunbergii P.) by microscope. Each member was tested with stress wave passing radially through the pith. In this study, the stress wave time of $12{\mu}s$/cm could distinguish between sound and decayed specimens with accuracy of 77.5 percent. Also, decayed specimens could be separated into moderate and severe categories by stress wave time of $20{\mu}s$/cm. Among the three decay location groups (exterior, mixed, interior), the exterior group could be classified into sound, moderate and severe decay with the greatest accuracy. Stress wave transit time was not sensitive to small decay pockets located in interior of the member.

  • DC potential drop(DCPD) measurement system was made and the optimum measuring conditions have been studied. The room temperature resistivity of commercially available medium carbon steel(S45C) was measured using this technique. DCPD was measured in the specimens which were hardened and tempered at different temperatures. It was found that DCPD reflected the change of the microstructure during tempering very sensitively. It was possible to monitor the stage of tempering of S45C steel nondestructively using DCPD measurement.

  • The nondestructive tests(NDT) are widely applied at various industrial job sites to detect defects and flaws early and thus to diagnose the quality and integrity of components, structures and systems. This paper discusses the R&MD history of various nondestructive testing techniques, their applications and many technical as well as safety issues identified, particularly in the performance of radiography. Also discussed are the principles of inspection methods and NDT qualifications that should be applied at the industrial job sites. As a result, this paper provides suggestions for improvement in Government programs to promote th NDT industry, for more systematic operation through a direct with the owner, and also for improvement in working conditions for NDT workers.

  • In this research, MFL technique has been studied for the inspection of storage tank floor. The reference specimens having 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% slot's are fabricated using the carbon steel plates of a 6mm and 10mm thick. Powerful permanent magnets and Hall effect sensors are used to this application. It is shown that our system is able to detect metal loss like a slot. Also, it is possible that slot diameter is measured using transverse type of Hall generator. It is demonstrated that MFL can not differentiate between the response from top side and bottom side slot. Flux leakage response from a bottom side indication is significantly lower in amplitude than that from an equivalent top side slot. It is essential to know this sensor lift-off distance because the MFL signal also changes considerably with the sensor lift-off distance.

  • NDE(Nondestructive examination) detects a flaw or discontinuity in materials. Flaws detected by the examination shall be evaluated for the decision basis of the integrity. The internal flaws of forging products can be detected by UT. However, UT has detection limits because of its reflected signal weakness. Normally, a 1mm or less flaw is known as the limit. If a flaw was detected, the size of flaw would be evaluated by AVG(or DGS) technique. To verify the evaluation data, alternative examination methods are needed. But there is no alternative examination methods until now. In this study, Phased array ultrasonic technique can be used to size the flaws in the generator rotor with focused beam of ultrasonic wave as a supplement method of AVG. Also, the phased array ultrasonic technique described enables the shape of flaw to be depicted exactly.

  • This paper discusses the feasibility of Ultrasonic Nondestructive Evaluation (UNDE) technique for sport weld quality. Ultrasonic c-scan image assisted by image processing technique was used for Nondestructive Evaluation(NDE) of spot weld quality. Ultrasonic testing results obtained were confirmed and compared by Optical Microscope and SAM(Scanning Acoustic Mircroscope) observation of the spot-weld cross section, The results show that the nugget dinameter can be successfully measured with the accuracy of 0.5mm. It was ascertained that ultrasonic c-scan technique is very effective method for the sake of the approach to the quantitative measurement of nugget diameter and the discrimination of the corona bond from nugget. Additional support for the above conclusions is provided by the results for galvanized steel. The ultrasonic results for galvanized welds generally correspond to the results for uncoated steel. Finally, it was found that the above-mentioned technique can be sufficiently applied to NDE method for securing the Quality Assurance(QA) of spot welded products in production line.

  • This paper proposes a noncontact thermography technique for fatigue crack evaluation under a cyclic tensile loading. The proposed technique identifies and localizes an invisible fatigue crack without scanning, thus making it possible to instantaneously evaluate an incipient fatigue crack. Based on a thermoelastic theory, a new fatigue crack evaluation algorithm is proposed for the fatigue crack-tip localization. The performance of the proposed algorithm is experimentally validated. To achieve this, the cyclic tensile loading is applied to a dog-bone shape aluminum specimen using a universal testing machine, and the corresponding thermal responses induced by thermoelastic effects are captured by an infrared camera. The test results confirm that the fatigue crack is well identified and localized by comparing with its microscopic images.

  • Many technical methods are used for nondestructive testing field for solid materials. Among those, ultrasonic inspection methods are widely used and one of the popular methods involves the extraction of an appropriate set of features followed by the use of a neural network for the classification of the signals in the feature space. This paper describes an approach which uses LMS method to determine the coordinates of the ultrasonic probe followed by the use of SAFT with centroid technique to estimate the location of the ultrasonic reflector. The method is employed for classifying UT-NDE signals from the steam generator tubes in a nuclear power plant. The classification results are presented for the ultrasonic signals from cracks and deposits within steam generator tubes.
