Sea ice is the main factor affecting the safety of the Arctic engineering. However, traditional numerical methods derived from classical continuum mechanics have difficulties in resolving discontinuous problems like ice damage. In this paper, a non-local, meshfree numerical method called "peridynamics", which is based on integral form, was applied to simulate the interaction between level ice and a cylindrical, vertical, rigid structure at different velocities. Ice in the simulation was freshwater ice and simplified as elastic-brittle material with a linear elastic constitutive model and critical equivalent strain criterion for material failure in state-based peridynamics. The ice forces obtained from peridynamic simulation are in the same order as experimental data. Numerical visualization shows advantages of applying peridynamics on ice damage. To study the repetitive nature of ice force, damage zone lengths of crushing failure were computed and conclude that damage zone lengths are 0.15-0.2 times as ice thickness.
Non-stationary random vibration of linear structures with uncertain parameters is investigated in this paper. A time-domain explicit formulation method is first presented for dynamic response analysis of deterministic structures subjected to non-stationary random excitations. The method is then employed to predict the random responses of a structure with given values of structural parameters, which are used to fit the conditional expectations of responses with relation to the structural random parameters by the response surface technique. Based on the total expectation theorem, the known conditional expectations are averaged to yield the random responses of stochastic structures as the total expectations. A numerical example involving a frame structure is investigated to illustrate the effectiveness of the present approach by comparison with the power spectrum method and the Monte Carlo simulation method. The proposed method is also applied to non-stationary random seismic analysis of a practical arch bridge with structural uncertainties, indicating the feasibility of the present approach for analysis of complex structures.

Appropriate random variables and probability density functions based on statistical analysis should be defined to execute reliability analysis. Most studies have focused on only normal distributions or assumed that the variables showing non-normal characteristics follow the normal distributions. In this study, the reliability problem with non-normal probability distribution was dealt with using the convolution method in the case that the integration domains of variables are limited to a finite range. The results were compared with the traditional method (linear transformation of normal distribution) and Monte Carlo simulation method to verify that the application was in good agreement with the characteristics of probability density functions with peak shapes. However it was observed that the reproducibility was slightly reduced down in the tail parts of density function.

Image interpolation, a technology that converts low resolution images into high resolution images, has been widely used in various image processing fields such as CCTV, web-cam, and medical imaging. This technique is based on the fact that the statistical distributions of the white Gaussian noise and the difference between the interpolated image and the original image is similar to each other. The proposed algorithm is composed of three steps. In first, the interpolated image is derived by random image interpolation. In second, we derive weighting functions that are used to apply non-local mean filtering. In the final step, the prediction error is corrected by performing non-local mean filtering by applying the selected weighting function. It can be considered as a post-processing algorithm to further reduce the prediction error after applying an arbitrary image interpolation algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields reasonable performance.

This study presents a numerical modeling of mean flow and turbulence structures of partly-vegetated open-channel flows. For this, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with vegetation drag terms are solved numerically using the non-linear k-${\varepsilon}$ model. The numerical model is applied to laboratory experiments of Nezu and Onitsuka (2001), and simulated results are compared with data from measurement and computations by Kang and Choi's (2006) Reynolds stress model. The simulation results indicate that the proposed numerical model simulates the mean flow well. Twin vortices are found to be generated at the interface between vegetated and non-vegetated zones, where turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress show their maximums. The model simulates the pattern of the Reynolds stress well but under-predicts the intensity of Reynolds stress slightly.

The HAUSAT-1(Hankuk Aviation University SATellite-1) will orbit at the altitude of 650km-800 km with 65 or 98 degree inclination angle. The effects of magnetic field and Earth gravity are more predominant than other space disturbances because the HAUSAT-1 will be positioned in LEO(Low Earth Orbit). The HAUSAT-1 design implements a magnetic control system and gravity-stable system which implement the solar panel deployment system. The simulation using MATLAB was performed to make sure the attitude stability of HAUSAT-1, which is based on the 8th order magnetic field model and non-linear equations of disturbances and the HAUSAT-1 attitude. The stability is investigated for two different HAUSAT-1 configurations and attitude which are affected by disturbances through simulation. The results for gravity-gradient stable
and non gravity-gradient stable system are compared. Methodology of attitude stabilization was explored to develop an effective attitude control system for the HAUSAT-1 using magnetic torquers.

Non-synoptic winds generated by tornadoes, downbursts or gust fronts exhibit significant non-stationarity and can cause significant wind load effect on flexible structures such as long-span bridges. However, conventional assumptions on stationarity used to evaluate the structural wind-induced vibration are inadequate. In this paper, an efficient frequency domain scheme based on fast CQC method, which can predict non-stationary buffeting random responses of long-span bridges, is presented, and then this approach is applied to evaluate the buffeting response of a long-span suspension bridge located in a complex mountainous wind environment as an example. In this study, the data-driven method based on one available measured wind speed sample is firstly presented to establish non-stationary wind models, including time-varying mean wind speed, time-varying intensity envelope function and uniformly modulated fluctuating spectrum. Then, a linear time-variant (LTV) system based on the proposed scheme can be generally applied to calculate the non-stationary buffeting responses. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed scheme are verified through Monte Carlo time domain simulation implemented in ANSYS platform. Also, the transient effect nature of the bridge responses is further illustrated by comparison of the non-stationary, quasistationary and steady-state cases. Finally, buffeting response analysis with traditional stationary treatment (10 min constant mean plus stationary wind fluctuation) is performed to illustrate the importance of the non-stationary characteristics embedded in original wind speed samples.
A new method is proposed for random vibration anaylsis of hysteretic systems subjected to non-stationary random excitations. With the Bouc-Wen model, motion equations of hysteretic systems are first transformed into quasi-linear equations by applying the concept of equivalent excitations and decoupling of the real and hysteretic displacements, and the derived equation system can be solved by either the precise time integration or the Newmark-${\beta}$ integration method. Combining the numerical solution of the auxiliary differential equation for hysteretic displacements, an explicit iteration algorithm is then developed for the dynamic response analysis of hysteretic systems. Because the computational cost for a large number of deterministic analyses of hysteretic systems can be significantly reduced, Monte-Carlo simulation using the explicit iteration algorithm is now viable, and statistical characteristics of the non-stationary random responses of a hysteretic system can be obtained. Numerical examples are presented to show the accuracy and efficiency of the present approach.
In this paper, new methods for efficiently solving linear acceleration equations of multibody dynamic simulation exploiting sparsity for real-time simulation are presented. The coefficient matrix of the equations tends to have a large number of zero entries according to the relative joint coordinate numbering. By adequate joint coordinate numbering, the matrix has minimum off-diagonal terms and a block pattern of non-zero entries and can be solved efficiently. The proposed methods, using sparse Cholesky method and recursive block mass matrix method, take advantages of both the special structure and the sparsity of the coefficient matrix to reduce computation time. The first method solves the η$\times$η sparse coefficient matrix for the accelerations, where η denotes the number of relative coordinates. In the second method, for vehicle dynamic simulation, simple manipulations bring the original problem of dimension η$\times$η to an equivalent problem of dimension 6$\times$6 to be solved for the accelerations of a vehicle chassis. For vehicle dynamic simulation, the proposed solution methods are proved to be more efficient than the classical approaches using reduced Lagrangian multiplier method. With the methods computation time for real-time vehicle dynamic simulation can be reduced up to 14 per cent compared to the classical approach.
In GvdW EOS, a recently presented paper, shows that the characteristic status for spherical non-linear particle, of which the mutual behavior is known to be vdWf(van der Waals force) only, could be described well enough in the critical region. However, in current papers, analysis has not been done on GvdW about whether it is accurate or not, even for the particles in the linear form or those with the additional mutual behavior such as static-electricity, so there's some argument about the wide use of that. Therefore, in this paper, for the simulation in the critical region of Normal-alkane group(R=methane, ethane, propane, butane) which are the particles that has a linear charateristic and Normal-amine group($RNH_2$, R=methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-amine) where static-electricity is extremely shown, GvdW parameter values about these particles are defined, and based on this simulation, we compared results to the current EOS presented recently, and analyzed them. Through the simulation, it was shown that in case of Normal-alkane group and Normal-amine group molecules, GvdW presents an accurate critical region characteristic which is far more close to the measurement compared to current EOSs. Especially for butane with big amount in molecules, we found out that only GvdW EOS can reach close enough to the critical point.
