  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the counter ion binding constant (B) for the mixed micellizations of DBS (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate), SDS (sodium dodecylsulfate), and Brij 30 (polyoxyethylene(4) lauryl ether) at $25^{\circ}C$ in pure water were determined by the use of electric conductivity and surface tension measuring methods. Various thermodynamic parameters ($X_i,\;{\gamma}i,\;C_i,\;a_i^M,\;{\beta}$, and ${\Delta}H_{mix}$) were calculated and compared with each other mixed surfactant system by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micellar model. The results show that the SDS molecule interacts more strongly with Brij 30 molecule than DBS molecule and that the SDS/Brij 30 mixed surfactant system has the greatest negative deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model and the SDS/DBS mixed system has followed almost the ideal mixed micellar model.

  • The performance of a tracking system is greatly increased if multiple types of sensors are combined to achieve the objective of the tracking instead of relying on single type of sensor. To conduct the multi-modal tracking, we have previously developed a multi-modal sensor-based tracking model where acoustic sensors mainly track the objects and visual sensors compensate the tracking errors [1]. In this paper, we find a network synchronization problem appearing in the developed tracking system. The problem is caused by the different location and traffic characteristics of multi-modal sensors and non-synchronized arrival of the captured sensor data at a processing server. To effectively deliver the sensor data, we propose a time-based packet aggregation algorithm where the acoustic sensor data are aggregated based on the sampling time and sent to the server. The delivered acoustic sensor data is then compensated by visual images to correct the tracking errors and such a compensation process improves the tracking accuracy in ideal case. However, in real situations, the tracking improvement from visual compensation can be severely degraded due to the aforementioned network synchronization problem, the impact of which is analyzed by simulations in this paper. To resolve the network synchronization problem, we differentiate the service level of sensor traffic based on Weight Round Robin (WRR) scheduling at the routers. The weighting factor allocated to each queue is calculated by a proposed Delay-based Weight Allocation (DWA) algorithm. From the simulations, we show the traffic differentiation model can mitigate the non-synchronization of sensor data. Finally, we analyze expected traffic behaviors of the tracking system in terms of acoustic sampling interval and visual image size.

  • This paper introduces a pre-compensation filter for compensating dispersive and resonant properties experienced along the usage of non-ideal wideband antennas in impulse communication systems. It has been well blown that the transmitted impulse signal becomes deformed because of dispersive and resonant characteristics. Accordingly, in spite of using ideal template signal at the correlator in coherent receiver, these impairments degrade overall performance attributed to low level of coherence. To overcome this problem this paper exploits a realization technique of pre-compensation filter purposely installed at transmitter whose stability is automatically guaranteed because it has an inversion form of minimum-phase ARMA (Auto-Regressive Moving Average) system. The performance of proposed scheme will be shown in results from computer simulations to verify its affirmative impact on impulse communication system with regarding several distinctively shaped antennas.

  • Providing security has been always on priority in all areas of computing and communication, and for the systems that are low on computing power, implementing appropriate and efficient security mechanism has been a continuous challenge for the researchers. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system is such an environment, which requires the design and implementation of efficient security mechanism. Earlier, the security protocols for RFID based on hash functions and symmetric key cryptography have been proposed. But, due to high strength and requirement of less key size in elliptic curve cryptography, the focus of researchers has been on designing efficient security protocol for RFID based on elliptic curves. In this paper, an efficient elliptic curve signcryption based security protocol for RFID has been proposed, which provides mutual authentication, confidentiality, non-repudiation, integrity, availability, forward security, anonymity, and scalability. Moreover, the proposed protocol successfully provides resistance from replay attack, impersonation attack, location tracking attack, de-synchronization attack, denial of service attack, man-in-the-middle attack, cloning attack, and key-compromise attack. Results have revealed that the proposed protocol is efficient than the other related protocols as it takes less computational time and storage cost, especially for the tag, making it ideal to be used for RFID systems.

  • In this paper, a precise trajectory tracking method for mobile robot using a vision system is presented. In solving the problem of precise trajectory tracking, a hierarchical control structure is used which is composed of the path planer, vision system, and dynamic controller. When designing the dynamic controller, non-ideal conditions such as parameter variation, frictional force, and external disturbance are considered. The proposed controller can learn bounded control input for repetitive or periodic dynamics compensation which provides robust and adaptive learning capability. Moreover, the usage of vision system makes mobile robot compensate the cumulative location error which exists when relative sensor like encoder is used to locate the position of mobile robot. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is shown through computer simulation.

  • The sending characteristics of the non-contact type displacement transducers can affect the performances of the magnetic bearing systems when they support the rotating shaft. The probe type displacement sensor detects not only the displacement of the rotor at the sensing position but also the surface irregularitis of the rotor such as surface roughnessand roundness errors. If there exist such measuring errors, the magnetic bearing can not apply proper force against the rotor displacements for the detected signal is the input to the magnetic bearing controllers. The cylindrical shape capacitive transducer can detect the rotor displacement by the integral sum of the charges which are formed between the sensor plates and rotor so that it can reduce the detecting errors induced by the surface irregularities of the rotor. By theore- tical analysis, we compared the sensing characteristics of the cylindrical shape capacitive transducers for the rotors that have some sinusoidal irregularities with that of the ideal probe type displacement transducers.

  • Environmental security is one of the major concerns for the safety of living organisms from a number of harmful pollutants in the atmosphere. Different initiatives, legislative actions, as well as scientific and social concerns have been discussed and adopted to control and regulate the threats of environmental pollution, but it still remains a worldwide challenge. Therefore, there is a need for developing certain sensitive, rapid, and selective techniques that can detect and screen the pollutants for effective bioremediation processes. In this perspective, isolated enzymes or biological systems producing enzymes, as whole cells or in immobilized state, can be used as a source for detection, quantification, and degradation or transformation of pollutants to non-polluting compounds to restore the ecological balance. Biosensors are ideal for the detection and measurement of environmental pollution in a reliable, specific, and sensitive way. In this review, the current status of different types of microbial biosensors and mechanisms of detection of various environmental toxicants are discussed.

  • Characteristics of droplet vaporization at high ambient pressures and temperatures which are supercritical conditions is studied numerically by formulating one dimensional vaporization model in liquid dodecane and air. Modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used to condider real gas effect. Non-ideal behavior of properties at near critical and supercritical conditions is considered in the high pressure condition. Characteristic spatial distribution of properties with various conditions of pressure and temperature is evaluated in order to understand vaporizing evolution.

  • All manufactured parts and tooling have unavoidable variations from their nominal shapes. During assembly, compliant parts are further deformed by relatively rigid assembly tooling. Lack of Knowledge regarding variations and deformations often results in expensive problems. Most current computer-aided design systems are based on ideally sized, ideally located and rigid geometry. This paper proposes a model for the assembly of compliant, non-ideal part. We start by defining tolerance analysis as the process of simulation the variation of a product or a subassembly when given the tolerance of required parts. Analysis is then done by finite element analysis and using the material properties of the actual parts to be assembled. Using the result, estimate the weld process.

  • Impedance calculations of electric railway traction systems is essential to define characteristics and to design it. The self impedance is defined voltage drop rate per unit length, the mutual impedance is represented as a voltage induced to transmission line from transmission line. The self and the mutual impedance are influenced by ground return currents. The earth is considered as a semi-infinitely extended non-ideal conductor. The current of transmission line produces earth current induced magnetically and it flow through a path having minimum impedance. Carson proposed the impedance calculation formula using wave equations and magnetic field equations. Though the formula have an improper equation, that is still used as a standard impedance calculation method. This paper introduced an impedance calculation method that the complex depth of earth return method assumes that the current in conductor returns through an imagined earth depth path located directly under original conductor at a depth of. In this paper, we showed that this proposed method has a closed form and is easier than Carson's.
