Objectives : We aimed to explore weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) by age and to find out the association between CUS and depression by the age group and weekday sleep duration (SD). Methods : Using data from the 2016-2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the CUS by age of 16,174 subjects was investigated, and the depression data of 11,088 subjects were analyzed. CUS was calculated as the weekend sleep duration minus weekday sleep duration (SD). The mean of CUS and weekday SD in depression group and non-depression group was compared by early, middle, and late adulthood groups, and logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the effect of CUS on the depression by age group when weekday SD was insufficient. Results : The CUS tended to decrease continuously with age, the mean of CUS in the late adult group was the shortest. However, the average SD, adjusted for weekend CUS, was the shortest in the middle adulthood group. Overall, the sleep durations were shorter in the depression group than in the non-depression group, but the CUS difference between the two groups was significantly only in the middle adulthood. The risk of depression was significantly higher when weekend CUS was less than 1hour with a short weekday SD of less than 6hours (OR 2.44, 95% CI: 1.78-3.35), and this finding was significant in all adult groups. Conclusions : The findings of this study suggest that short weekday SD and inadequate weekend CUS are associated with depression and that CUS is an option to compensate for sleep deprivation and prevent depression.
Purpose: This study aimed to prove the effects of the net-step exercise (NSE) on gait ability, depression, cognitive function and activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults. Methods: The study employed a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. A total of 64 community-dwelling older adults were recruited and divided equally into two groups; 32 subjects for an experimental group and 32 subjects for a control group. In the experimental group, the NSE was applied to an hour, two times per week for 4 weeks. The level of gait ability, depression, cognitive function and ADL were measured before and after NSE. The study conducted from July to August, 2016. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, ANCOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients using SPSS/WIN 22.0 version. Results: Gait ability, depression, cognitive function were significantly better in the experimental group than the control group. However, the difference in ADL was not significant between the two groups. Conclusion: These findings in this study showed that the NSE was an efficient intervention for older adults. Nurses could apply non-pharmacological interventions to avoid pharmacological side-effects.
The aim of this study was to analyse effects that the degree of depression have on the life style variables, nutrient intake, iron indices and pregnancy outcome. Subjects were 114 pregnant women who were receiving prenatal care at a hospital in Seoul. We collected data for general characteristics and lifestyle variables from general survey instrument and for depression score from the questionnaire on depression. Dietary intakes of subjects were estimated by 24 hour dietary recall method. Also we analysed iron indices and pregnancy outcomes. We classified subjects by 10 point, which was the average depression score, into two groups [Low depression score group (LS) : High depression score group (HS)]. As to the intakes of total calcium, plant-calcium, plant-iron, potassium, total folate and dietary folate, LS group was far higher than HS group (P < 0.05, P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.001, P < 0.05, and P < 0.01, respectively). As to pre-pregnancy alcohol drinking, LS group had 41.9% in non-drinker, which was far higher than 28% in HS group in non-drinker (P < 0.05). As for drinking coffee during pre-pregnancy, pregnant women who don’ drink coffee in LS group took 43.6%, which was higher than 38% in HS group (P < 0.01). Regarding delivery type, the cesarean section in LS group (18%) was significantly lower than that in HS group (45%) (P < 0.01). Bivariate analysis showed that birth weight was significantly associated with the gestational age (P < 0.01). The pregnant women with higher depression score tended to have undesirable life habit, which might affect negative pregnancy outcomes. A better understanding of how depression and intake of nutrients work together to modulate behavior will be benefit nutritional research.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the difference about pathogenesis of normal group and depression group(who' pulmonary function is below expected value). Author used DSOM to investigate oriental pathogenesis. Depression group is consisted of people who's FVC%(forced vital capacity)is below 80% or $FEV_1$/FVC%(Forced Expiratory Volume in 1sec/FVC) is below 70%, and they don't have history of lung disease(Athma, tuberculosis, COPD, suchlike). Normal group is consisted of people who's FVC%(Forced Vital Capacity) is in 80-120% and $FEV_1$/FVC%(Forced Expiratory Volume in 1sec/FVC) is above 70%. they also don't have history of lung disease. Author carried out each group's PFT(pulmonary function test) by ATS(American Thoracic Society) method. DSOM was used for oriental pathogenesis investigation of two groups. There was significant difference between normal group and depression group in Kidney(p<0.05). In depression group comparison of sex, there was significant difference between male and female in stagnation of qi, cold, heat, spleen, phlegm(p<0.05). In Normal group there was significant difference between male and female in stagnation of qi, blood stasis, cold, heat, spleen(p<0.05). In depression group comparison of smoke, there was no significant difference between smoker and non-smoker(p<0.05). In Normal group comparison of smoke, there was significant difference between smoker and non-smoker in heat(p<0.05). This result showed difference of the pathogenesis between Depression group and Normal group.
Purpose; This study is to identify effects of the hand massage on the hand edema, ADL and depression of hemiplegic patients. Method; This study used a non-equivalent control group and non-synchronized design, the subjects of the study are 56 hemiplegic patients(28 for the exp. group and 28 for the cont. group), hospitalized in K oriental medical center. The experimental group has had the hand massage for 10 minutes a day for 2 weeks. Before and After the treatment, hand edema, ADL and depression of these two groups were examined. The SPSS 11.0 program package Collected data analyzed with $X^2$-test, Fisher's Exact test, t-test. Results; 1. The score of ADL was significantly higher in the experimental group who had hand massage than in the control group. 2. The degree of hand edema and depression in the experimental group is reduced. But, it is not statistically significant. Conclusion; The hand massage is available for improving ADL but much effective for hand edema, and depression. Therefore, through the repeated study, we could confirm that its application is meaningful.
Fall is one of the most intimidating health conditions in elders. Comprehensive assessment is necessary to understand the individual and environmental aspects of the falls such as balancing abilities, depression, and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to compare the balancing ability, depression, and quality of life between elderly fallers and elderly non-fallers. Thirty-two community-dwelling elders (fifteen males and seventeen females between 65 and 83 years old), who have experienced fall on walking during last twelve months, were involved in the elderly fallers group. And twenty-four males and twenty-two females between 65 and 83 years old of community-dwelling elders, who have no experienced fall on walking during last twelve months, were involved in the elderly non-fallers group. Berg balance scale (BBS), timed up and go test (TUG), and functional reach test (FRT), were used to evaluate the ability of the physical balance. 'Beck depression scale in Korean' questionnaire was used to assess the depression. 'Korean version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument-Bref' questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life. The results were as follows: 1) Balancing abilities measured by the BBS, TUG in the elderly fallers group were meaningfully lower than that of the elderly non-fallers group (p<.05), whereas no significant difference in the FRT was found (p>.05). 2) Depression level in the elderly fallers group was significantly higher than that of the elderly non-fallers group (p<.05). 3) Quality of life in the elderly fallers group was significantly lower than that of the elderly non-fallers group, excluding environment domain (p<.05). Therefore, in order for clinical evaluation of the community-dwelling elders those with reduced balancing ability, it is necessary to evaluate and understand the fall experience, depression, and quality of life.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the usefulness of psychological measurements in depression symptoms as compared with non-depressions and hwabyung. Methods: A total of 21 patients, who were diagnosed with depression and hwabyung, were evaluated by using the SCL-90-R, BDI, STAI, STAXI, ISI, HRSD, 20-Item Alexithymia Scale, BSDS and NEO-PI. Thereafter, they were statistically analyzed. Results: 1) In the results of SCL-90-R, the PST score group of hwa-byung group without depression was significantly higher when compared to the score from the depression group without hwa-byung. 2) In the results of NEO-PI, the NEO-PI-O score of hwa-byung group without depression was significantly higher when compared to the score from the depression group without hwa-byung. 3) In the results of 20-Item Alexithymia Scale, the total score and score of difficulty for identifying feelings scale from the depression group was significantly higher when compared to the score of non depression group. Conclusions: The results found are expected to serve as a useful resource for future studies when developing the instruments of oriental medical evaluations for hwa-byung.
