  • In the supersonic jet of a solid rocket motor, various noise is investigated. The purpose of this study is to attain and evaluating a design and manufacturing technique of the SRM noise reduction. In this study, the water is injected into the supersonic jet of the SRM to reduce the noise. Furthermore, the diffuser and stack are installed to suppress the SRM noise. Through the SRM ground tests, the noise is reduced approximately 20dBA with application of the diffuser/stack with water injection.

  • With the advent of fast power devices, the high dv/dt voltage produced by PWM inverts have been found to cause EMI noise, shaft voltage and bearing current. This paper describes the application of newly developed Conducted EMI reduction SVPWM technique in induction motor drives. The newly developed common mode voltage reduction SVPWM technique don't use any zero-vector states for inverter control, hence it can restrict the common mode voltage more than conventional PWM technique. The validity of the proposed technique by software approach is verified through simulation and experimental results.

  • In this paper an optical power meter using Hadamard transform, which can be used in multiple channel optical elements alignment system, is proposed. A traditional optical power meter in multiple channel optical elements alignment system is able to judge how well the elements are aligned each other by measuring optical power of the first and the last two channels with at least two detectors. It has critical drawback that the alignment accuracy per channel is dependent on the number of detectors. The proposed optical power meter can get noise reduction by the Hadamard transform based multiplexing technique. The Hadamard transform based multiplexing technique using spatial light modulators is distinguished by the best enhancement of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the reconstructed signals. Moreover, the noise reduction increases with increasing the order of multiplexing, namely the number of optical element channels. The proposed system is implemented by PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) mask which is operated by electric filed and generates optimal multiplexing patterns based on the Hadamard transform and single detector. It means that we obtain not only the each channel's optical power of multiple channel elements at once but also the best enhancement of SNR with single detector. Experimental results show that the proposed optical power meter is suitable for an active optical alignment system for multiple channel optical elements.

  • This paper proposes a design optimization technique for ship RCS signature reductions using Taguchi method. The proposed technique comprises of i)evaluating initial RCS signatures, ii)defining critical areas which should be modified as design parameters, and threat factors which can't be controlled artificially as noise parameters, and finally iv)finding optimum parameters via analyzing signal to noise ratios for designated characteristics. We applied the technique to a model ship and found that it is suitable for radar stealth designs. In addition, the proposed technique is applicable to submarine designs against sonar threats.

  • The cooling system, including a fan is a one of the major sources to generate the radiated noise of construction equipment. Therefore, it is required to reduce the flow noise induced by a fan in order to reduce the noise level. In this study, we made an engine room model to carry out a variety of experiments. And then, the flow noise analysis technique using the CFD code was applied to the cooling system of construction equipment. These analyses results agree well with the measurement results. These results make it possible to understand the flow noise characteristics and to design the low noise cooling system in the design stage.

  • Purpose: To improve the image quality in positron emission tomography (PET), the attenuation correction technique based on the computed tomography (CT) data is important process. However, the artifact is caused by metal material during PET/CT scan, and the image quality is degraded. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate image quality according to with and without iterative metal artifact reduction (iMAR) algorithm using customized 3D printing phantom. Materials and Methods: The Hoffman and Derenzo phantoms were designed. To protect the gamma ray transmission and express the metal portion, lead substance was located to the surface. The SiPM based PET/CT was used for acquisition of PET images according to application with and without iMAR algorithm. The quantitative methods were used by signal to noise ratio (SNR), coefficient of variation (COV), and contrast to noise ratio (CNR). Results and Discussion: The results shows that the image quality applying iMAR algorithm was higher 1.15, 1.19, and 1.11 times than image quality without iMAR algorithm for SNR, COV, and CNR. Conclusion: In conclusion, the iMAR algorithm was useful for improvement of image quality by reducing the metal artifact lesion.

  • Reduction of structure-borne noise of the compartment in a car is an important task in automotive engineering. Transfer path analysis using vibroacoustic reciprocity technique or multiple path decomposition method has generally been used for structure-borne noise path analysis. These methods are useful in solving particular problem but do net quantify the effectiveness of vibration isolation of each isolator of a vehicle. To quantify the effectiveness of vibration isolation, the vibrational power flow has been used for a simple isolation system or a laboratory based isolation system. It is often difficult to apply the vibrational power flow technique to the complex isolation system like a car. In this paper, a simple equation is derived for calculation of the vibrational power flow of an isolation system with multiple isolators such as a car. It is successfully applied to not only quantifying the relative contributions of eighteen isolators but also reducing structure-borne noise of a passenger car. According to the results, the main contributor of eighteen isolators is the rear roll mount of an engine. The reduced structure-borne noise level is about 5dBA.

  • This paper describes a principle of the conducted noise separator which can separate the conducted noise to the common mode and differential mode(normal mode), and presents the transfer characteristics of the separator designed and manufactured. We separated the conducted noise generated from switched mode converter to the CM and DM conducted noise, and also analyzed the source and path of conducted noise in the converter by the conducted noise separator. Since we could easily get the characteristics of the CM and DM conducted noise by the separator, we could efficiently determine the contermeasures for the reduction of the conducted noise and establish the foundation of the systematic procedure for the design of low pass filter.

  • A more applicable optimization model for extracting flutter derivatives of bridge decks is presented, which is suitable for time-varying weights for fitting errors and different lengths of vertical bending and torsional free vibration data. A stochastic search technique for searching the optimal solution of optimization problem is developed, which is more convenient in understanding and programming than the alternate iteration technique, and testified to be a valid and efficient method using two numerical examples. On the basis of the section model test of Sutong Bridge deck, the flutter derivatives are extracted by the stochastic search technique, and compared with the identification results using the modified least-square method. The Empirical Mode Decomposition method is employed to eliminate noise, trends and zero excursion of the collected free vibration data of vertical bending and torsional motion, by which the identification precision of flutter derivatives is improved.
