Strong wind flow around a building complex was numerically studied by LES. The original motivation of this work stemmed from the efforts to develop a risk assessment technique for windstorm hazards. Lagrangian-averaged scale-invariant dynamic subgrid-scale model was used for turbulence modeling, and a log-law-based wall model was employed on all the solid surfaces including the ground and the surface of buildings to replace the no-slip condition. The shape of buildings was implemented on the Cartesian grid system by an immersed boundary method. Key flow quantities for the risk assessment such as mean and RMS values of pressure on the surface of the selected buildings are presented. In addition, characteristics of the velocity field at some selected locations vital to safety of human beings is also reported.

The suppression of a thermocapillary flow (Marangoni flow) by a nonionic surfactant is experimentally investigated for evaporating pure water droplets on hydrophobic substrates. The experiment shows that as the initial concentration of the surfactant increases, the velocity and lifetime of the flow monotonically decrease. The result confirms the no-slip boundary condition at a liquid-air interface, which is explained on the basis of the previous model regarding the effect of surfactants on the no-slip condition. Interestingly, at an initial concentration much less than a critical value, it is found that depinning of the contact line occurs during the early stage of evaporation, which is ascribed to a reduction in the contact angle hysteresis owing to the presence of the Marangoni flow.
In the present study, the flow behaviors of square jets surface discharged and submerged discharged into shallow water were each simulated using computational fluid dynamics, and the results were compared. As for the verification of the models, the results of the hydraulic experiment conducted by Sankar, et al. (2009) were used. According to the results of the verification, the present application of computational fluid dynamics to the flow analysis of square jets discharged into shallow water was valid. As for the wall jet, which is one form of submerged discharges, at the bottom wall boundary, the peak velocity of the jet rapidly moved from the center of the jet to the bottom wall boundary due to the restriction of jet entrainment and the no-slip condition of the bottom wall boundary, and, as for the surface discharge, because jet entrainment is limited on the free water surface, the peak velocity of the jet moved from the center of the jet to the free water surface. This is because jet entrainment is restricted at the bottom wall boundary and the surface so that the momentum of the central core of the jet is preserved for considerable time at the bottom wall boundary and the surface. In addition, due to the effect of the bottom wall boundary and the free water surface, the jet discharged into shallow water had a smaller velocity diminution rate near the discharge outlet than did the free jet; at a location where it was so distant from the discharge outlet that the vertical profile of the velocity was nearly equal (b/x =20~30), moreover, it had a far smaller velocity diminution rate than did the free jet due to the effect of the finite depth.
VIC (Vortex-In-Cell) method for viscous incompressible flow is presented to simulate the wake behind a modified NACA16 foil. With uniform rectangular grid, the velocity in field is calculated using streamfunction from vorticity field by solving the Poisson equation in which FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) is combined with 2nd order finite difference scheme. Here, LES(Large Eddy Simulation) with Smagorinsky model is applied for turbulence calculation. Effective viscosity is formulated using magnitude of strain tensor(or vorticity). Then the turbulent diffusion as well as viscous diffusion becomes particle strength exchange(PSE) with averaged eddy viscosity. The well-established panel method is combined to obtain the irrotational velocity and to apply the no-penetration boundary condition on the body panel. And wall diffusion is used for no-slip condition numerical results of turbulent stresses are compared with experimental results (Bourgoyne, 2003). Before comparing process, LES(Large Eddy Simulation) SGS(Subgrid scale) stress is transformed Reynolds averaged stress (Winckelmans, 2001).
A simple Lagrangian pdf model is proposed with a new numerical algorithm for application in wall-bounded turbulent flows. To investigate the performance of the Lagrangian model, we minimize model's dependence on empirical constants by selecting the simplest model for turbulent dissipation rate. The effect of viscosity is also included by adding a Brownian random walk calculate the position of a particle. For the no-slip condition at the wall and correct nearwall behavior of velocity, we develop a new boundary treatment for the particles that strike the wall. By applying the model to a fully developed turbulent channel flow at low Reynolds number, we investigate the model's performance through comparison with direct numerical simulation result.
Wave breaking phenomenon near the fore body of a ship is numerically simulated. The ship advance with uniform velocity in calm water. For the simulation, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation are adopted as governing equations. The simulation is carried out in staggered variable mesh system with finite difference method. Marker and Cell(MAC) method and Marker-Density method are employed to track the free surface. Body boundary conditions are satisfied with the adoption of porosity method and no-slip condition on the hull surface. The ship model has a wedge type fore-body, and the computational domain is an appropriate region around the fore-body. The computation results are compared with some experimental results. Also the difference of the free surface tracking methods are discussed.

Experiments were carried out for a cubic cavity flow. Contrinuous shear stress is supplied by driven flow for high Reynolds number and three kinds of aspect ratios. Velocity vectors are obtained by PIV and they are used as velocity components for Poisson equation for pressure, Related boundary conditions and no-slip condition at solid wall and the linear velocity extrapolation on the upper side of cavity are well examined for the present study. For calculation of pressure resolution of grid is basically $40{\times}40$ and 2-dimensional uniform mesh using MSC staggered grid is adopted. The flow field within the cavity maintains a forced-vortex formation and almost of the shear stress from the driving inflow is transformed into rotating flow energy and the size of the distorted forced-vortex increases with increment of Reynolds number
In this study, we consider the characteristics of channel flow in the presence of an infinite streamwise array of equispaced identical rotating circular cylinders. This flow configuration can be regarded as a model representing a micro channel or an internal heat exchanger with cylindrical vortex generators. A numerical parametric study has been carried out by varying Reynolds number based on the bulk mean velocity and the cylinder diameter, and the gap between the cylinders and the channel wall for some selected angular speeds. An immersed boundary method was employed to facilitate implementing the cylinders on a Cartesian grid system. No-slip condition is employed at all solid boundaries including the cylinders, and the flow is assumed to be periodic in the streamwise direction. The presence of the rotating circular cylinders arranged periodically in the streamwise direction causes a significant topological change of the flow, leading to increase of mean friction on the channel walls. More quantitative results as well as qualitative physical explanations are presented to justify the effectiveness of rotating cylinders to modify flow topology, which might be used to enhance heat transfer on the channel walls.

CMBT(Curved Moving Boundary Treatment) is a newly developed scheme for the treatment of a no slip condition on the curved solid wall of moving obstacle in a flow field. In our research CMBT was used to perform LBM simulation of a flow over a moving circular cylinder to determine the flow feature and aerodynamics characteristic of the cylinder. To ascertain the applicability of CMBT on the complex shape of the obstacle, it was first simulated for the case of the flow over a fixed circular cylinder in a channel and the results were compared against the solution of Navier-Stokes equation with deforming mesh technique. The simulations were performed in a moderate range of reynolds number at each moving cylinder to identify the flow feature and aerodynamic characteristics of circular cylinder in a channel. The drag coefficients of the cylinder were calculated from the simulation results. We have numerically confirmed that the critical reynolds number for vortex shedding is ar Re=250 and the result is the same as the case of fixed cylinder. As the cylinder approaching to one wall, the 2nd vortex is developed by interacting with the wall boundary-layer vorticity. As the velocity ratio increase the third vortex are generated by interacting with the 2nd vortexes developed on the upper and lower wall boundary layer. The resultant $C_d$ decrease as reynolds number increasing and the Cd approached to a value when Re>1000.

Since conventional computer program is workable only with velocity boundary condition, in practical fluid passage such as clean room which usually have wide inlets and outlets, it is not easy to measure velocity itself because of its vector property. Furthermore a certain assumption of velocity at boundaries may lead to physically unreasonable results. From this motivation, we have developed a computer program to predict whole flow field imposed on pressure-based boundary condition which can be measured by relatively simple method. The only additional velocity boundary condition that should be imposed on to make the problem unique, are no slip condition at all walls and zero cross stream velocity at inlet. The result of present study was compared with that by Bernoulli equation being used practically. They were coincident well each other within 5%, therefore the validity of the present method is proved. In the present work, the flow field in a clean room subject to pressure-based boundary conditions at an inlet and two exits was predicted numerically. The pressure difference between the inlet and the left exit which keeps relatively low pressure among two exits is fixed as 150[Pa] and the pressure at the right exit is varied from zero to 150[Pa] by the increment of 25[Pa]. For each cases the flow characteristics in the clean room, the velocity profile at the inlet, and the flow rate through the two exits was predicted. The flow rate through the right exit imposed on relatively higher pressure than the left exit decreased linearly according to the increase of pressure of the right exit. When the pressure of the right exit is increased enough to cause back flow at the exit, the flow rate is rapidly decreased.
