  • The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61788-26:2020 provides guidelines for measuring the critical current of Rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) tapes using two methods: linear ramp and step-hold methods. The critical current measurement criterion, 1 or 0.1 μV/cm of electric field from IEC 61788-26 has been normally applied to REBCO coils or magnets. No-insulation (NI) winding technique has many advantages in aspects of electrical and thermal stability and mechanical integrity. However, the leak current from the NI REBCO coil can cause distortion in critical current measurement due to the characteristic resistance which causes the radial current flow paths. In this paper, we simulated the NI REBCO coil by applying both linear ramp and step-hold methods based on a simplified equivalent circuit model. Using the circuit analysis, we analyzed and evaluated both methods. By using the equivalent circuit model, we can evaluate the critical current of the NI REBCO coil, resulting in an estimation error within 0.1%. We also evaluate the accuracy of critical current measurement using both the linear ramp and step-hold methods. The accuracy of the linear ramp method is influenced by the inductive voltage, whereas the accuracy of the step-hold method depends on the duration of the hold-time. An adequate hold time, typically 5 to 10 times the time constant (τ), makes the step-hold method more accurate than the linear ramp method.

  • In this study, thermal transmittance which is a parameter to measure the thermal performance was evaluated for an internal insulation versus an external insulation. Then the ISO regulation was applied to evaluate it, and the superiority of an external insulation was verified by the thermal transmittance values. The three zones of apartment housing were selected to evaluate the performance. (1) The junction of an outer wall and a protruded slab : If there is no a thermal bridge protection system, then the values are about same in the two insulation systems, so the protection system should certainly be installed. If it is installed, then the value for the external insulation is 2 times lower than internal system. (2) The junction of a side wall and a flat slab: The value is 0.509W/mK for the internal insulation and about zero for the external insulation. (3) The junction of an outer wall and a division wall: The value is 0.451W/mK for the internal insulation and also about zero for the external insulation. A domestic regulation that could evaluate a thermal transmittance has to be established by applying the ISO regulation for the evaluation of external insulation systems in apartment housing in the future. Additionally, the government must decide which length should be used for the national standard.

  • Energy saving standard for buildings are strengthened, the application of exterior insulation finishing system and thickness of insulation materials are increasing. Most buildings with exterior insulation finishing system is applied organic insulating material. Organic insulating material have workability, economic feasibility, reduction in construction cost, and excellent thermal insulation performance. However, Organic insulating material is very vulnerable to heat, so when a fire occurs, rapid fire spread and toxic gas are generated, causing many casualties. Inorganic insulating material can be non-combustible performance, but it is heavy and has low thermal insulation performance. Mineral wool has higher thermal insulation performance than other types of inorganic insulating material, but mineral wool is disadvantageous to workability and vulnerable to moisture. Glass bubble are highly resistant to water and chemically stable substances. In addition, the density of the glass bubble is very low and the particles are spherical, fluidity is improved by the ball bearing effect. Glass bubbles can be used with cement-based ino rganic insulating material to impro ve the weight and thermal insulatio n perfo rmance o f cement-based inorganic insulation. This study produced a inorganic insulating materials were manufactured using cement-based materials and glass bubble. In order to evaluate the insulation performance and flame retardant performance of cement-based super light-weight inorganic insulating materials using with glass bubble, insulation performance or flame retardant and non-combustible performance were evaluated after manufacturing insulating materials using micro cement and two types of glass bubbles. From the test result, Increasing the mixing ratio of glass bubbles improved the insulation performance of cement-based super light-weight inorganic insulating materials, and when the mixing ratio of glass bubbles was 10%, it sho wed sufficient flame retardant and no n-co mbustible perfo rmance.

  • In this study, the floor impact sound insulation performance of Korean domestic Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) slabs was evaluated according to their joint types, species and thicknesses in laboratory experiments. The sound insulation performance of the CLT has not been investigated before, thus, this study was conducted to quantify basic data on floor impact sound insulation performance of CLT slabs. 5-ply and 150 mm thick CLT panels made of 2 species, Larix kaempferi and Pinus densiflora, were used for the study. The CLT panels were assembled by 3 types of inter-panel joints to form floor slabs: spline, butt and half-lap. And the 150 mm thick Larix CLT slabs were stacked to the thicknesses of 300 mm and 450 mm. The heavy-weight floor impact sound insulation performance of the 150 mm CLT slabs were evaluated to be 70 dB for the Larix slabs and 71.6 dB for the Pinus slabs, and the light-weight floor impact sound insulation performance, 78.3 dB and 79.6 dB, respectively. No significant difference in the sound insulation performance was found between the slabs of the 2 species or among the 3 types of joints. The reduction of 1 dB in the heavy-weight floor impact sound and 1.6 dB in the light-weight floor impact sound per 30 mm increase in thickness were confirmed through the experiments. This study can be viewed as the basic research for the evaluation of floor impact sound insulation performance of CLT.

  • This study investigated the applicability of insulation curing method with double layer bubble sheets to the man concrete subjected to cold weather. Temperature history of the mass concrete indicated that the highest temperature of center section was exhibited at $34^{\circ}C$ while the that of surface section was $25^{\circ}C$. Difference between center and surface was shown to be less $10^{\circ}C$ when the temperature of center section was peak section, and thereby associated temperature cracking index was calculated 1.5, and occurrence probability of temperature cracking was 5%, so there was no temperature cracking caused by internal restraint. No temperature crack was observed by naked eye. It was clear that early frost demage and temperature cracking could be restrained due to reducing temperature difference between inner part and outside in the case double bubble sheets applied to insulation curing method in cold weather. The maturity of mass concrete is higher than outside about $72\sim89^{\circ}$ DD, so it was demonstrated to prevent early frost demage and ensure strength excellently. Insulation curing method with double bubble sheets was more economic than heating curing method.

  • Kimchi refrigerator is a household electric appliance developed with the wholly domestic technology for maturing and keeping kimchi. However, the principle of keeping is not yet revealed obviously. This numerical study has been conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a kimchi refrigerator. The effects of arrangement variation of a evaporation tube are examined. Also, the heat transfer characteristics through the insulation material are discussed in detail. The flow and temperature field was simulated using the commercial code of CFX-5.3. A natural convection flow is formed through about 5/6 region from the bottom within the keeping space and accordingly, the 90% region of kimchi containers satisfies the temperature requirement with 0$\pm$0.5$^{\circ}C$. The stagnant flow exists in the upper 1/6 region of the keeping space and accordingly, the stratified high temperature distributions appear in the upper region of kimchi containers. The upward shift of the start location of a evaporation tube improves the temperature concentration toward $0^{\circ}C$ but the pitch variation is of no effect. The heat fluxes on the insulation surfaces show two-dimensional distributions with being higher toward the center. Through the variation of insulation thickness, 3.5% saving of insulation material is obtained under the same heat transfer rate.

  • Recently, an advanced raw material supplying system in diecasting industry that molten metal produced by the raw material supplier can be directly delivered to the diecasting shops was proposed. It was known to have advantages of reducing melting process cost and improving working environment. However, for its successful mass production, the development of high insulation ladle is inevitable. In this study, the optimal mixing ratio of $SiO_2-Al_2O_3$ was investigated and the high insulation ladle with computer simulation result was built in a prototype and evaluated. The prototype which has refractory wall of $SiO_233%-Al_2O_3$ 35%-CaO 33% showed high insulation sufficient for carrying the Al molten metal for 138 minutes. Gas quantity result and SEM-EDS analysis on the melt poured in the ladle also showed extremely low level of 0.028 cc / 100 g and no penetration of Al molten metal into the refractory wall, satisfying the requirements for mass production.

  • IInsulation material is generally used for preventing heat loss from heat transport fluids, and water absorption severely reduces the insulation property. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the amount of water absorption supplied by the pouring method and spraying method, to investigate the effects of water absorption on the thermal conductivity of an insulation material, and modeling the relation between water absorption and thermal conductivity. E-glass, a kind of glass fiber, and HYPERLITE, mainly composed of pearlite, are selected, to compare hygroscopic and insulation properties. E-glass is found to have much higher water absorptivity, compared to HYPERLITE. The thermal conductivity of the water-absorbed E-glass is increased by more than 150%, compared to that of no absorption, while variation of the thermal conductivity of HYPERLITE with water absorption is insignificant. A three-stage model of water absorption for thermal conductivity is developed, and the modeling results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • An attempt was made to determine individual thermal resistances of 2-lining fabrics ad 4-outer fabrics for Korean-styled clothes, and 4-lining fabrics ad 5-outer fabrics for Western-styled clothes at $19^{\circ}C$ and $24^{\circ}C$. The thermal insulation effects for different lining fabrics in Korean and Western-styled clothes were deduced in determining heart rate, rectal temperature, mean skin temperature and microclimates of subjects. The subjects were dressed experimental clothing which were made of lining and outer fabrics in question, and seated in an environmental chamber during the experiment. 1. Thermal resistances of lining fabrics : For Korean-styled clothes. nylon sheer is larger than unzosa. For Western-styled clothes, rayon, acetate, nylon(taffeta) and kalkali in that order. 2. Thermal resistances of lining fabrics combined : with outer fabrics: For Korean-styled clothes. the measured value is larger than the one of simple aggregate value. But in the case of Western-styled clothes, the measured value is smaller than simple aggregate value. 3. The effects of lining on the thermal insulation of the whole clothing: In case when subjects wore unlimited number of underwear, no matter what lining fabrics were used in Korean and Western-styled clothes less thermal insulation effects were indicated. For the case, however, if subjects wore only limited underwear, there are significant differences of thermal insulation between experimental clothings.

  • Restrictions on the emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter from marine engines are being tightened. Each of these emissions requires different reduction technologies, which are costly and require many pieces of equipment to meet the requirements. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel has a great advantage in reducing harmful emissions emitted from ships. Therefore, the marine engine application of LNG fuel is significantly increasing in new ship buildings. Accordingly, this study analyzed the internal support structure, insulation type, and fuel supply piping system of a 35 m3 International Maritime Organization C type pressurized storage tank of an LNG-fueled ship. Analysis of the heat transfer characteristics revealed that A304L stainless steel has a lower heat flux than A553 nickel steel, but the effect is not significant. The heat flux of pearlite insulation is much lower than that of vacuum insulation. Moreover, the analysis results of the constraint method of the support ring showed no significant difference. A553 steel containing 9% nickel has a higher strength and lower coefficient of thermal expansion than A304L, making it a suitable material for cryogenic containers.
