  • Bipyridine and its derivatives have been widely used as the ligands in transition metal complexes. The proton affinities of pyridine derivatives were calculated using an ab initio quantum mechanical method (B3LYP with various double zeta and triple zeta basis sets) in combination with the Poisson-Boltzmann continuum solvation model. Van der Waals radii of the atoms in the heterocyclic rings for the solvation energy calculation were set to values determined to reproduce the $pK_a$ values of guanine and oxoguanine derivatives and that of chlorine was optimized to reproduce the experimental values of relating compounds. The $pK_a$ values for the heterocyclic ring compounds were in agreement with the experimental values with a mean unsigned error of 0.45 $pK_a$ units.

  • A method for synthesizing o-carborane substituted tetrahydroisoquinolines containing a polar functional group such as sulfamide, sulfonic, or phosphoric acid on the nitrogen atom of the piperidine ring, starting from arylethylamine, N-(2-arylethyl)sulfamide, N-(2-arylethyl)sulfamic acid or 2-arylethylamidophosphate, is described. In vitro studies showed the desired compounds 10, 15, 19, and 25 synthesized accumulate to high levels in B-16 melanoma cells with low cytotoxicity.

  • Purification of indole contained in model coal tar absorption oil was examined by extraction-distillation-crystallization combination. The absorption oil consists of nine components such as four kinds of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds (9.2% quinoline, 2.4% iso-quinoline, 4.7% indole, 2.4% quinaldine), three kinds of bicyclic aromatic compounds (14.2% 1-methylnaphthalene, 31.8% 2-methylnaphthalene, 23.5% dimethylnaphthalene), 5.5% biphenyl and 3.3% phenyl ether. 99.5% indole was recovered by combination of formamide extraction-distillation-solute crystallization using n-hexane. Furthermore, the recovery process of indole contained in coal tar absorption oil was studied by using the experimental results obtained by each operation of this work.

  • The angular and planar heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen were synthesized by reaction of 6,7-dichloro-5,8-quinoxalinedione with aromatic and aliphatic dinucleophiles. Nucleophilic reactivity was somewhat different between 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone and 6,7-dichloro-5,8-quinolinedione with dinucleophiles. The distribution of electron in heterocycle appeared to contribute to this difference. The intercalation comple of planar heterocyclic compound between GC/GC base pairs showed the optimum intercalation but the intercalation of angular heterocyclic compound was not good. Thus, the planar compound was expected to have antitumor activity.

  • Objectives: Pathogenic microbes are causal agents for various types of severe and even lethal infectious diseases. Despite of development in medication, bacterial and fungal infections still persist to be a vital problem in health care. Bacteria and several fungal species have shown resistance to antibiotics used in treatment to current medications. Therefore, it is a considerable field of interest in the design and development of novel compounds with antimicrobial activity. Methods: The compounds bearing a heterocyclic ring play an imperative role among other organic compounds with pharmacological activity used as drugs in human for control and cure of various infections. Thiadiazoles containing nitrogen-sulfur atom as part of their cyclic structure which shown wide-ranging application as structural units of biologically active molecules and are very useful intermediates in Medicinal Chemistry. Results: The effectiveness of the thiadiazole nucleus was established by the drugs currently used for the treatment of various infections. 1,3,4-Thiadiazoles and some of their derivatives are widely studied because of their broad spectrum of pharmacological activities. Conclusion: In the present work, a series of 1,3,4-Thiadiazole derivatives were synthesized by cyclization of a group of various benzaldehyde with thiosemicarbazide in the presence of various reagent like FeCl3, HCHO by losing a molecule of water. These derivatives were found to possess prominent antimicrobial activity.

  • We investigated the separation of nitrogen heterocyclic compound (NHC) contained in a model coal tar fraction comprising four kinds of NHC [indole (In), quinoline (Q), iso-quinoline (iQ), quinaldine (Qu)], three kinds of bicyclic aromatic compound (BAC) [1-methylnaphthalene (1MN), 2-methylnaphthalene (2MN), dimethylnaphthalene (DMN) mixture with ten structural isomers (DMNs; regarded as one component)], biphenyl (Bp) and phenyl ether (Pe) by liquid membrane permeation (LMP). A batch-stirred tank was used as the permeation unit. An aqueous solution of saponin and n-hexane were used as the liquid membrane and the outer oil phase, respectively. Yield and selectivity of individual NHC was much larger than that of BAC, Bp and Pe. Increasing the initial mass fraction of the saponin to the membrane solution ($C_{sap,0}$) and the initial volume fraction of O/W emulsion to total liquid in a stirred tank (${\phi}_{OW,0}$) resulted in deteriorating the yield of individual NHC, but increasing the stirring speed (N) resulted in improving the yield of each NHC. With increasing $C_{sap,0}$, the selectivity of each NHC based on DMNs increased. Increasing ${\phi}_{OW,0}$ and N resulted in decreasing the selectivity of individual NHC based on DMNs. At an experimental condition fixed, the sequence of the yield and selectivity in reference to DMNs for each NHC was Q > Qu = iQ > In. Furthermore, we compared LPM method with methanol extraction method in view of the separation efficiency (yield, selectivity) of NHC.

  • Two rhodium(I) complexes of the types [Rh(BPPF)(NBD)]$ClO_4$ (10) and [Rh(BPPF)$Cl]_2$ (11) (BPPF = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-ferrocene) have been prepared and investigated as catalysts for the regioselective hydrogenation of polynuclear heteroaromatic nitrogen and sulfur compounds such as quinoline (1), acridine (2), phenanthridine (3), 7,8-benzoquinoline (4), benzothiophene (5), isoquinoline (6), indole (7), pyridine (8), and thiophene (9). Both complexes 10 and 11, except for the cases of indole (7) and mononuclear heteroaromatics 8-9, are very efficient in the selective reduction under quite mild hydrogenation conditions to give the corresponding saturated nitrogen and sulfur heterocyclic analogues of 1-6 in fast conversion rates and in excellent yields. Relative rate studies revealed that the reduction depends significantly on the steric and electronic effects of the substrates. Of the two complexes 10-11, the dimeric species 11 gives faster reaction rates in all cases studied.

  • The separation of indole from a model mixture comprising four kinds of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds [indole (In), quinoline (Q), iso-quinoline (iQ), quinaldine (Qu)], three kinds of bicyclic aromatic compounds [1-methylnaphthalene (1MN), 2-methylnaphthalene (2MN), dimethylnaphthalene (DMN)], biphenyl (Bp) and phenyl ether (Pe) was examined by batch cocurrent 4 stages equilibrium extraction. The model mixture used as a raw material in this work was prepared according to the components and compositions contained in coal tar fraction (the temperature ranges of fraction: $240{\sim}265^{\circ}C$). An aqueous solution of formamide was used as a solvent. Indole was recovered more than 99% through 4 stages of the equilibrium extraction. The range of selectivity of indole in reference to DMN obtained through the 5 stages equilibrium extraction was found to be 63~118. The process for separation and recovery of indole contained in coal tar was studied by using the experimental results obtained from this work and the previous work.
