  • The glucose application remarkably increased the heterotrophic acetylene reducing activities during one month incubation. The amount of the increases varied between the soils. Application of rice straw brought about the significant increases during incubation time. Compost contained the largest amount of available-N among the C-sources, and thereby brought the smallest increase in all soils. The cumulative fixed nitrogen with application of rice straw at 30 days incubation in the three experimented soils were highest in Hwadong clay soil, i.e, $2.2mg^N/100g$, intermediate in Ratchaburi soil $0.85mg^N$, and least in Konosu soil $0.80mg^N/100g$. On the other hand, nitrogen fixing heterotrophic, bacteria, such as Clostridia, aerobes and anaerobes, were remarkably increased by application of rice straw while Azotobacter and Beijerinkia were not. The cumulative fixed nitrogen was more pronounced in the clay soil than in the coarse loamy soil. More pronounced nitrogen fixing activities in light condition(heterotrophic + photosynthetic) than that in dark(heterotrophic) condition have been observed both in the coarse loamy and clay soils. The nitrogen fixing ability of photosynthetic microbes in paddy soil is probably higher in coarse loamy soil than in clay soil.

  • The present study was conducted to measure diurnal patterns in the flow of soluble non-ammonia nitrogen (SNAN) fractions in the liquid phase of digesta entering the omasum of cows fed grass-red clover silage supplemented with barley and rapeseed meal. Four ruminally cannulated cows were fed, in a 4×4 Latin square design, grass-red clover silage alone (GS) or supplemented with (on a DM basis) 6.0kg/d of barley grain, 2.1kg/d of rapeseed meal or 6.0kg/d of barley and 2.1kg/d rapeseed meal. Omasal digesta was taken using an omasal sampling system at 1.5h intervals during a 12h feeding cycle, and SNAN fractions (free AA, peptide and soluble protein) in the omasal digesta were assessed using ninhydrin assay. Dietary supplementation numerically increased the mean flow of SNAN fractions relative to GS diet despite the lack of statistical significance. Diurnal patterns in the flow of peptide entering the omasum during a 12h feeding cycle appeared to be highest immediately after feeding, declined by 10.0h post-feeding and slightly increased thereafter. In SNAN fractions, the flow of peptide was higher for supplemented diets than for GS diet throughout the feeding cycle. Based on the microbial contribution to total SNAN using 15N, diurnal patterns in the flow of dietary SNAN for dietary supplemented diets appeared to be higher compared with GS diets. Present results may conclude that peptide flow is quantitatively the most important N in SNAN fractions and that dietary supplementation can increase peptide flow entering the omasal canal.

  • Biodegradable coating urea plays an important role in reducing the non-pollutants in agroecosystems, maximizing the plant nutrient utilization efficiency and slow-releasing nitrogen. Herein, the objective of this study was to investigate the nitrogen-releasing patterns and greenhouse gas emissions on different biodegradable coating urea. The treatments consisted of the control as an application of chemical fertilizers, NBCF as the non-biodegradable coating urea, NB60, and MDS as biodegradable coating urea. As a result of this study, the maximum accumulated total nitrogen (TN) concentration in the NBCF was higher at 33% than one in the NB60 during the precipitation periods. Its leaching period in the NCBF was prolonged for day 10 compared to the NB60. TN and NO3-N releasing patterns in the NBCF and NB60 were fitted well on linear types(R2≥0.991), but their control and MDS were fitted well on Sigmoid curves(R2≥0.994) with high releasing concentration in the MDS compared to the control during leaching periods. For the greenhouse gas emissions, CH4 emissions in the NBCF, NB60, and MDS were increased at 0.38%, 11.36%, and 5.91%, and N2O emissions were also increased at 50.5%, 32.4%, 58.8% as compared to the control, respectively. Therefore, application of biodegradable polymer coating urea might mitigate the non-point pollutants in agro-ecosystem.

  • Winter crops have been recognized as an alternative to soil management for fertility and crop productivity in paddy soil. Recently, rape has been produced at winter season and there is little research results on reduction of N fertilizer by adding rape residues for rice cultivation. In this study, we investigated the productivity and quality of rice by applying with 0, 27, 63, $90kg\;ha^{-1}$ of N fertilizer after input of rape residues into soil for two years. The highest yield of rice was average $4.68Mg\;ha^{-1}$ at the treatment applied with the $90kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ with rape residue. It was reduced to N rate from 31.6 to $43.2kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ in comparison to $4.53Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of maximum yield in treatment added $90kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ with rape. Amylose content in rice was similar among treatments with/without rape residue, but protein content was lower in treatment with rape residue than in those without rape residue. In conclusion, input of rape residue in rice cultivation could be alternative to reduction of N fertilization and improvement of quality by adjusting rice productivity in paddy soil under cropping system.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the cultural characteristics, the production of antibiotic, and the selection of optimal media for mass culture of Bacillus licheniformis N1 isolate which was previously reported as an antagonistic bacterium to Botrytis cinerea. We investigated initial pH, temperatures and shaking speed for good cultural conditions and antibiotics production by N1 isolate. According to the results, the optimal conditions of initial pH, temperatures, and shaking speed were determined to be pH 5.0~5.5, 30~35$^{\circ}C$ and 250 rpm, respectively. Also, the optimal conditions for the antagonism by N1 isolate highly appeared in the initial pH as 5.0, and the mycelial growth inhibition was high when the substances used such as glucose or corn starch as carbon sources, and biji(soybean curd residue) flour as a nitrogen source. Furthermore, inhibitory area was significantly expanded, when 3% or 5% of corn starch was added into 5% of Biji flour as nitrogen source, were respectivley selected for mass culture of N1 isolate. Among them, 5% Biji flour medium showed higher cell density more than 10 times that in NB medium after 48 hour incubation. Therefore, the optimal medium was determined as 5% biji flour added 3~5% of corn starch for high density of cells.

  • BACKGROUND: Mixed cropping of hairy vetch and Barley is widely used as a green manure for reducing chemical fertilizers while maintaining soil fertility in paddy soil. We investigated the effect of Molybdenum (Mo) fertilizer on vetch N2 fixation, biomass production and transfer N from vetch to barley under a hairy vetch-barley mixed cropping system. METHODS AND RESULTS: The barley and hairy vetch were sowed at a rate of 135 and 23 kg/ha, respectively, without chemical fertilizer application but with Mo fertilizer at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kg/ha as a treatment. The percentage of hairy vetch N derived from air N2 fixation (%Ndfa) and N transfer from hairy vetch to barley (%Ndfv) was determined by the 15N natural abundance method. Although application of Mo at 2.0 kg/ha significantly increased biomass of both barley and hairy vetch, the biomass was decreased at application of Mo 4.0 kg/ha. At the application of Mo 2.0 kg/ha, the percentage of Ndfa and Ndfv was 81.7 and 53.9, respectively, which are significantly higher than that of the treatments without Mo. CONCLUSION: These results highlight that application of Mo fertilizer can be an effective measures to improve N fixation in hairy vetch and biomass production in both barley and hairy vetch.

  • The effects of the presence of a submerged plant, Zizania latifolia, on physico-chemical characteristics, including Eh, pH, and concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the sediments were studied under pot culture condition. It was shown that Eh value at reduced layer of the sediments was higher in the planted pots than in the non-planted. It was also revealed that $NH_4^+-N$ concentration of the sediments in the planted pots was lower than that of the non-planted, which might be due to the uptake by the plants. In contrast, $NO_3^--N$ concentration in the sediment increased in the presence of the plants compared to the non-planted, which might be attributed to oxygen released from the roots to the reduced layer. The concentration of organic phosphorus in the sediments was much higher than that of NAIP at the beginning of the planting experiment. However, at the end of the experiment, it was reversed; NAIP concentration was much higher than that of organic phosphorus, possibly indicating the transformation of organic phosphorus to NAIP during the experimental period. Both concentrations of $NH_4^+-N$ and $PO_4^{3-}-P$ in the overlying and percolated water were lower in the planted pots than in the non-planted. The concentration of $NO_3^--N$ in the percolated water, however, was higher in the planted pots than in the non-planted. The data was discussed with regard to the potential effects of a submerged plant on dynamics of phosphorus and nitrogen in the rhizosphere of the sediment.

  • To investigate the changes of $NH_4-N$ in soil, nitrogen uptake by rice plant, nitrogen use efficiency and rice yield by the application of Latex Coated Urea(LCU) on direct seeding rice, rice was planted on paddy field, Jeonbuk series at the Honam area, from 1996 to 1997. Nitrogen in LCU applied as basal dressing in whole layer was dissolved almost untill non-productive stage. Thus, nitrogen deficiency symptom appeared and N in shoot was 1.75% showing 28.1 of SPAD value at heading stage. However percentage recovery of fertilizer N was higher in LCU than with urea application. Top dressing of urea at panicle initiation stage in addition to basal dressing of LCU, increased rice yield by 9%. Conventional split application of urea on the surface decreased the percentage recovery of fertilizer N to 56.9% of whole layer application plot.
