Recovery of silver in the spent solution generated from MEO(Mediated Electrochemical Oxidation) process, which is a process to decompose radioactive organic mixed wastes at low temperature, was performed using chemical method. Silver nitrate in 5M nitric acid solution could be completely recovered as AgCl by using 1% excess of the stoichiometric HCl equivalents. Then, AgCl was transformed to Ag metal by reduction reaction with hydrogen peroxide under alkaline media. The optimum pH for the reduction to silver metal was found to be in the range of 12.8∼13.0.

This study was designed to analyze the effects of methanol extracts and solvent fractions of the young branch of Prunus persica on scavenging activity of ROS, RNS and inhibiting activity of oxidative modification in human LDL induced by copper ion or free radical generator. The scavenging capacities of the fractions on DPPH radical, superoxide radical, nitric oxide and peroxynitrite were exhibited the highest in ethylacetate fraction, followed by butanol fraction. In the copper-induced LDL oxidative modification system, the highest antioxidant activity was revealed in ethylacetate fraction, and butanol fraction exhibited a similar activity. However, solvent fractions of the young branch of Prunus persica showed a relatively low antioxidant activity in the AAPH-mediated LDL oxidation. In addition, ethylacetate and butanol fractions also inhibited the copper-mediated LDL oxidation in the REM assay, which was comparable to that of the positive controls, including EDTA, ascorbic acid and BHT. Futhermore, a content of total phenolics in these two fractions was higher than that of the other fractions. These results indicated that ethylacetate and butanol fractions of the young branch of Prunus persica were useful for the prevention of the free radical- or metal ion-induced oxidative damages.

The oxidation treatment of several carbon materials with a sodium chlorate and 70 wt.% of nitric acid, combined with heat treatment, were attempted to achieve an electrochemical active material with a larger capacitance. Among pitch, needle coke, calcinated needle coke and natural graphite, the structure of needle coke and calacinated needle coke were changed to the graphite oxide structure with the expansion of the inter-layer. On the other hand, the calcinated needle coke after oxidation and heating at $200^{\circ}C$ has exhibited largest capacitance per weight and volume of 29.5 F/g and 24.5 F/ml at the two-electrode system in the potential range of 0 to 2.5 V. The electrochemical performance of the calcinated needle coke was discussed with the phenomenon of the electric field activation and the formation of new pores between the expanded inter-layer at first charge.
The principal objective of the current study was to isolate a purpurogallin derivative as an oxidation product from gallic acid, in an effort to assess the anti-inflammatory effects of this compound. Purpurogallin derivative is known to be the one of the oxidation products of gallic acid. This compound has been identified as a minor chemical component in fermented tea products. It has been previously demonstrated that theaflavins, the oxidation products of catechins found in fermented tea products, exert profound antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the biological activities of a minor chemical component in fermented teas have yet to be evaluated. Purpurogallin carboxylic acid (PCA) was identified as a major oxidation product of gallic acid from a peroxidase/hydrogen peroxide oxidation model system. The identity of the PCA was verified by $^{1}H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR and MS techniques. PCA treatment significantly suppressed the generation of pro-inflammatory mediators including nitric oxide and IL-6 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 murine macrophages. According to the nitrite assay, PCA 100, 75, and $50{\mu}g/mL$ treatment dose-dependently inhibited NO production by 57.6, 41.5, and 21.8%, respectively, in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 murine macrophage cells. Moreover, IL-6 production was inhibited to a significant degree with PCA treatment of 100 and $75{\mu}g/mL$ at 43.1 and 23.9%, respectively. PCA treatment also significantly suppressed $PGE_2$ production at levels of 100 and $75{\mu}g/mL$. These results showed that PCA exerts inhibitory effects on the production of inflammatory mediators.

This study was conducted to remove $NO_x$, which is the main cause of fine dust and air pollution as well as acid rain. $NO_x$ was tested using 3% NO (diluted in He) as a simulated gas. Experiments were sequentially carried out by oxidizing NO to $NO_2$ and absorbing $NO_2$. Especially, we focused on the changes of NO oxidation according to both oxidant ($NaClO_2$) concentration change (1~10 M) and oxidant pH change (pH = 1~5) by adding HCl. In addition, we tried to suggest a method to improve $NO_2$ absorption by conducting $NO_2$ reduction reaction with reducing agent (NaOH) concentration (40~60%). It was found that NO removal efficiency increased as both concentration of oxidant and flow rate of NO gas increased, and NO decreased more effectively as the pH of hydrochloric acid added to the oxidant was lower. The $NO_2$ adsorption was also better with increasing NaOH concentration, but the NO removal efficiency was ~20% lower than that of the selective NO reduction. Indeed, this experimental method is expected to be a new method that can be applied to the capture and removal of fine dust caused by air pollution because it is a method that can easily remove NO gas by a simple device without expensive giant equipment.
Extraction behaviour of Np with DEHPA(di-(2-ethyhexyl)Phosphoric acid) from the low nitric acid solution(below 1M $HNO_3$) containing $H_2O_2$ as a reducing agent was studied at a batch system in order to establish the conditions of extraction and stripping and to enhance the extraction rate. As results, it was confirmed that the Np was mainly the pentavalent oxidation state in the low nitric acid solution. The extraction yield of Np was increased with increasing the concentration of DEHPA and $H_2O_2$ and decreased more rapidly with the increase of $HNO_3$ concentration. It was also found that the Np could be extracted into DEHPA even without the addiction any redox agents, although the extraction yield is rather low as about 70%. The extraction rate was proportional to the 0.516 power of $H_2O_2$ concentration and inversely proportional to 0.483 power of $HNO_3$ concentration as follows. $d[Np(V)]/dt=-1.391{\times}10^{-2}[H_2O_2]^{0.516}[HNO_3]^{-0.483}[Np(V)]$ Regardless of the $H_2O_2$, the Np extracted in the organic phase was effectively stripped to the aqueous phase with $H_2C_2O_4$. The Np could be stripped more than 92 % with 0.5M $H_2C_2O_4$.

In accordance with the decommissioning plan for the Kori Unit 1 NPP, the reactor coolant system will be chemically decontaminated as soon as possible after permanent shutdown. This study developed the chemical decontamination process though the development project of decontamination technology of reactor coolant system and dismantled equipment for NPP decommissioning, which has been carried out since 2014. In this study, Oxidation/reduction process was conducted using system decontamination process development equipment of lab scale and was divided into unit and continuous processes. The optimal process time was derived from the unit process, and decontamination agent and the number of process were derived through the continuous processes. Through the unit process, the oxidation process took 5 hours and the reduction process took 4 hours. As optimum decontamination agent, the oxidizing agent was $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Permanganic acid + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Nitric acid and the reducing agent was $2000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Oxalic acid. In the case of the number of processes, all oxide films were removed during the two-cycle chemical decontamination process of STS304 and SA508. In the case of Alloy600, all oxide films were removed when chemical decontamination was performed for three cycles or more.
A study on the destruction of organic cation and anion exchange resins by electro-generated Ag(II) as a mediator was carried out to develop the ambient-temperature aqueous process, known as Ag(II)-mediated electro-chemical oxidation (MEO) process, for the treatment of a large quantity of spent organic ion exchange resins as the low and Intermediated-level radioactive wastes arising from the operation, maintenance and repairs of nuclear facilities. The effects of controllable process parameters such as applied current density, temperature, and nitric acid concentration on the MEO of organic ion exchange resins were investigated. The cation exchange resin was completely decomposed to $CO_2$. The current efficiency increased with a decrease in applied current density while nitric acid concentration and temperature on the MEO of cation exchange resin did not affect the MEO. On the other hand, anion exchange resins were decomposed to CO and $CO_2$. The ultimate conversion to CO was about $10\%$ regardless of temperature. The destruction efficiencies to $CO_2$ were dependent upon temperature and the effective destruction of anion exchange resin could be obtained above $60^{\circ}C$.
The radical scavenging activity and inhibition effect from lipid peroxidation induced by peroxyl radical of methanol extract from Perilla frutescens and its active compound, rosmarinic acid (RA), were investigated in vitro. The treatment of extract and RA scavenged 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, hydroxyl radical (${\cdot}OH$) and nitric oxide in a concentration-dependent manner. In particular, the extract and RA showed strong radical scavenging activity against ${\cdot}OH$, the most toxic and reactive radical. In addition, Perilla frutescens and RA effectively inhibited lipid oxidation induced by sodium nitroprusside and 2,2'-azobis(2-aminopropane) dihydrochloride, determined by the ferric thiocyanate method. The present results suggest that Perilla frutescens and RA play a protective role against oxidative stress induced by free radical and lipid peroxidation.
To protect the occurrence of the oxidation of car body, we developed antioxidizing device made with sacrificial anode. Because car body is made of iron and iron-alloy and oxidation potential of Mg, Al and Zn is higher than that of iron, sacrificial anodes were made with Mg, Al and Zn. Accordingly, Mg, Al and Zn are better oxidizing than car body, iron and iron-alloy can be protected from oxidizing. We have made an antioxidizing device and evaluated their anti-corrosive effect for iron piece in the solution of hydrochloric, nitric and sulfuric acid using balance, SEM and XPS. When iron pieces were connected with antioxidizing device of car body, weight loss by oxidation was remarkably reduced and surface corrosion of iron piece was protected. It was shown that the surface of iron pieces which is not con-nected to the device was changed to iron(Ⅲ) oxide, Fe$_2$O$_3$. Therefore, if this device is attached to car body, corrosion and oxidation of car body will be reduced, considerably.
