The optimization of submerged culture conditions for mycelial growth and exopolysaccharide (EPS) production in an edible mushroom Tremella fuciformis were studied in shake flasks and bioreactors. The temperature of $28^{\circ}C$ and pH 8 in the beginning of fermentation in agitated flasks was the most efficient condition to obtain maximum mycelial biomass and EPS. The optimal medium constituents were as follows (g l-1): glucose 20, tryptone 2, $KH_2PO_4$ 0.46, $K_2HPO_4$ 1 and $MgSO_4H_2O$ 0.5. The fungus was cultivated under various agitation and aeration conditions in a 5L stirred-tank bioreactor. The maximum cell mass and EPS production were obtained at a relatively high agitation speed of 200 rpm and at an aeration rate of 2 vvm. The flow behavior of the fermentation broth was Newtonian and the maximum apparent viscosity (35 cP) was observed at a highly aerated condition (2 vvm). The EPS productivity in an airlift reactor was higher than that in the stirred-tank reactor. The EPS was protein-bound polysaccharides consisted of mainly mannose, xylose, and fructose. The molecular weights of EPS were determined to be $1.3{\sim}1.5{\times}10^6$.

The implementation of gelled propellants systems offers high performance, thrust-control, energy management of propulsion, storability, and high density impulse of solid propulsion. Present study focused on the spray behavior of liquid sheets formed by impinging jets of non-Newtonian liquids which are mixed by Carbopol 941 0.5%wt. The results are then compared with experiments conducted on spray images formed by impinging jets concerning with air-blast effect at center orifice. When gel propellants are injected by doublet impinging jets at low pressure, closed rim pattern shape appeared. As increasing air mass flow rate(decreasing GLR), spray breakup and atomization phenomenon better improved and spray structure instabilities for the effect of air-blast are also increased.

Natural convection of a magnetic fluid is different from that of Newtonian fluids because magnetic-body force exists in addition to gravity and buoyancy. In this paper, natural convection of a magnetic fluids (W-40) in a cubic cavity was examined by experimental method. One side wall was kept at a constant temperature (25 $^{\circ}C$), and the opposite side wall was also held at a constant but lower temperature (20 $^{\circ}C$). The magnetic fields of various magnitude were applied up and down by permanent magnets. We measured temperatures at 5 points which are the most suitable places in cavity by the analysis record. The thermo-sensitive liquid crystal film (R20C5A) was utilized in order to visualize wall-temperature distributions. Several kinds of experiments were carried out in order to clarify the influence of direction and intensity of magnetic fields on the natural convection. It was found that the natural convection of a magnetic fluids could be controlled by the direction and intensity of the magnetic fields.
Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) blends with various components for melt-blown non-wovens were prepared by a twin-screw extruder. Tributyl citrate (TBC) was added in order to improve the miscibility between PLA and PCL. The results showed that small circular particles of PCL were dispersed in PLA matrix uniformly. The addition of PCL had the heterogeneous nucleation effect on the crystallization of PLA and decreased thermal stability of PLA. The flow of pure PLA and blends approached to Newtonian liquid at a low shear rate and expressed more obvious viscoelasticity at a high shear rate.
We have investigated the transient behavior of 1D fully developed Poiseuille viscoelastic flow under finite pressure gradient described by the Oldroyd-B and Leonov constitutive equations. For analysis we employ a simple $2^{nd}$ order discretization scheme such as central difference for space and the Crank-Nicolson for time approximation. For the analysis of the Oldroyd-B model, we also apply the analytical solution, which is obtained again in this work in terms of elementary solution procedure simpler than the previous one (Waters and King, 1970). Both models demonstrate qualitatively similar solutions, but their eventual steady flowrate exhibits noticeable difference due to the absence or presence of shear thinning behavior. In the inertialess flow, the flowrate instantaneously attains a large value corresponding to the Newtonian creeping flow and then decreases to its steady value when the applied pressure gradient is low. However with finite liquid density the flow field shows severe fluctuation even accompanying reversals of flow directions. As the assigned pressure gradient increases, the flowrate achieves its steady value significantly higher than its value during oscillations after quite long period of time. We have also illustrated comparison between 1D and 2D results and possible mechanism of complex 2D flow rearrangement employing a previous solution of [mite element computation. In addition, we discuss some mathematical points regarding missing boundary conditions in 2D modeling due to the change of the type of differential equations when varying from inertialess to inertial flow.
A numerical analysis on the microstructural evolutions of microcellular and cellular ${\alpha}-aluminum$ phase in the gas-atomized Al-8wt. pct droplets was represented. The 2-dimensional non-Newtonian heat transfer and the dendritic growth theory in the undercooled melt were combined under the assumptions of a point nucleation on droplet surface and the macroscopically smooth solid-liquid interface enveloping the cell tips. It reproduced the main characteristic features of the reported microstructures quite well. It predicted a considerable volume fraction of segregation-free region in a droplet smaller than $l0{\mu}m$ if an initial undercooling larger than 100K is given. The volume fractions of the microcellular region($g_A$) and the sum of the microcellular and cellular region($g_a$) were predicted as functions of the heat transfer coefficient, h and initial undercooling, ${\triangle}T$. It was shown that $g_A$ and $g_a$, in the typical gas-atomization processes with $h=0.1-1.0W/cm^2K$, are dominated by ${\triangle}T$ and h, respectively, but for h larger than $4.0W/cm^2K$, a fully microcellular structure can be obtained irrespective of the initial undercooling.

In the past, facile dissolution of cellulose has been hampered by the lack of suitable nondegrading solvents. Recently, this problem has been solved in our laboratory by the discovery of an inexpensive, convenient solvent system, that is the mixture of $NH_3\;and\;NH_4SCN$, for cellulose. Also, the $cellulose/NH_3/NH_4SCN$ solution system has been found to form the anisotropic, i.e., liquid crystalline phase. It is believed that both the cholesterio and the nematic phase occur. This finding has prompted extensive on-going researoh on the formation of the liquid crystalline phase from an inexpensive natural source such as cellulose since the nematic phase is envisioned as an excellent precursor sources for products with desirable properties, for example, high modulus and high strength. This interest naturally leads to a desire to understand the theological properties of the nematic phase so that the transformation of the nematic phase to the solid state with desirable properties can be efficiently accomplished, ;From this point of view, the theological behavior of the $cellulose/NH3_/NH_4SCN$ system has been studied as a function of shear rate and shear stress over a wide range of solvent compositions, cellulose concentration, centrifugation and urea contents, Results indicate that the viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate. A marked shear thinning behavior and a quasi-Newtonian behavior were observed in the low shear rate region and in the high shear rate region, respectively for all solvent compositions. The $cellulose/NH_3/NH_4SCN$ solution system only exhibited the viscosity increase with increasing cellulose concentration and failed to show the viscosity drop generally observed at the point of incipience of liquid crystal formation, This may be due to the gel-like nature of the solution by the association of the rodlike molecules into bundles which may serve as crosslinking points giving the cellulose solution a network structure. Also, simply hydrogen bonding may be so restrictive of molecular mobility that a viscosity drop is blocked. In addition to the above results, yield stress and thixotropy were also observed in the $cellulose/NH_3/NB_4SCN$ solution system which are characteristics of liquid crystal and gel, The results of the effect of centrifugation on viscosity show that viscosity decreases by the application of centrifugation. This may be explained by the change of the piled polydomain structure to the dispersed polydomain structure due to the pressure gradient generated during centrifugation.ation.
Using a strain-controlled rheometer [Rheometrics Dynamic Analyzer (RDA II)], the steady shear flow properties of a semi-solid ointment base (vaseline) have been measured over a wide range of shear rates at temperature range of $25{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. In this article, the steady shear flow properties (shear stress, steady shear viscosity and yield stress) were reported from the experimentally obtained data and the effects of shear rate as well as temperature on these properties were discussed in detail. In addition, several inelastic-viscoplastic flow models including a yield stress parameter were employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady shear flow behavior, and then the applicability of these models was examined by calculating the various material parameters (yield stress, consistency index and flow behavior index). Main findings obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) At temperature range lower than $40^{\circ}C$, vaseline is regarded as a viscoplastic material having a finite magnitude of yield stress and its flow behavior beyond a yield stress shows a shear-thinning (or pseudo-plastic) feature, indicating a decrease in steady shear viscosity as an increase in shear rate. At this temperature range, the flow curve of vaseline has two inflection points and the first inflection point occurring at relatively lower shear rate corresponds to a static yield stress. The static yield stress of vaseline is decreased with increasing temperature and takes place at a lower shear rate, due to a progressive breakdown of three dimensional network structure. (2) At temperature range higher than $45^{\circ}C$, vaseline becomes a viscous liquid with no yield stress and its flow character exhibits a Newtonian behavior, demonstrating a constant steady shear viscosity regardless of an increase in shear rate. With increasing temperature, vaseline begins to show a Newtonian behavior at a lower shear rate range, indicating that the microcrystalline structure is completely destroyed due to a synergic effect of high temperature and shear deformation. (3) Over a whole range of temperatures tested, the Herschel-Bulkley, Mizrahi-Berk, and Heinz-Casson models are all applicable and have an almostly equivalent ability to quantitatively describe the steady shear flow behavior of vaseline, whereas the Bingham, Casson, and Vocadlo models do not give a good ability.

The application of multiphase flows is increasingly being applied to analyze phenomena such as single phase flows where the fluid boundary changes continuously over time or the problem of mixing a liquid phase and a gas phase. In particular, multiphase flow models that take into account incompressible Newtonian fluids for liquid and gas are often applied to solve the problems of the free water surface such as wave fields. In general, multi-phase flow models require time-based the surface tracking of each fluid's phase boundary, which determines the accuracy of the final calculation of the model. This study evaluates the advection performance of representative VOF-type boundary tracking techniques applied to various CFD numerical codes. The effectiveness of the FCT method to control the numerical flux to minimize the numerical diffusion in the conventional VOF-type boundary tracking method and advection calculation was mainly evaluated. In addition, the possibility of tracking performance of free surface using CIP method (Yabe and Aoki, 1991) was also investigated. Numerical results show that the FCT-VOF method introducing an anti-diffusive flux to precent excessive diffusion is superior to other methods under the confined conditions in this study. The results from this study are expected to be used as an important basic data in selecting free surface tracking techniques applied to various numerical codes.
