  • A taxonomic study of small mammals (Erinaceomorpha, Soricomorpha and Rodentia) was conducted in order to find out the scientific names which have been used in Korea. The synonymy of each species and taxonomical research was reviewed and confirmed in this study. The species names are rearranged based on recent studies. Among the various confused names, available names were adopted such as follows: C. shantungensis shantungensis known as Crocidura suaveolens; C. shantungensis quelpartis known as C. dsinezumi; Rattus tanezumi known as R. rattus, called black rat, roof rat and ship rat, respectively. Apodemus sylvaticus (Muridae, wood mouse) is excluded in the checklist based on indistinct previous records and ambiguous habitation on the Korean Peninsula, and neighbors. In addition, we provide a new Korean vernacular name for Myocastor coypus, called the "Nutria" in Korea. We reflect that several species are repositioned to other genera. A checklist of Korean small mammals and synonym list for each species is provided to avoid confusion of scientific names in Korea. In this study, the list of small mammals in Korea is arranged to 33 species, 20 genera, 8 families, and 3 orders.

  • Web data mining aims at discovering useful knowledge from various Web resources. There is a growing trend among companies, organizations, and individuals alike of gathering information through Web data mining to utilize that information in their best interest. In science, cloud computing is a synonym for distributed computing over a network; cloud computing relies on the sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economies of scale, similar to a utility over a network, and means the ability to run a program or application on many connected computers at the same time. In this paper, we propose a new system framework based on the Hadoop platform to realize the collection of useful information of Web resources. The system framework is based on the Map/Reduce programming model of cloud computing. We propose a new data mining algorithm to be used in this system framework. Finally, we prove the feasibility of this approach by simulation experiment.

  • Previous surveys on Ulleung-do (Dagelet Isl.) found just ten earthworm taxa while the current survey unearthed a dozen species. Placement of parthenogenetic 'tube' Amynthas dageletensis Hong & Kim, 2005 is resolved as it clearly belongs in synonymy of Metaphire soulensis (Kobayashi, 1938) which becomes a new Ulleung-do record. Other new megascolecids are recorded since Amynthas heteropodus (Goto & Hatai, 1898) and A. baemsagolensis Hong & James, 2001 are confirmed as synonyms of A. corticis (Kinberg, 1867) and A. carnosus (Goto & Hatai, 1899), respectively. The latter taxon is differentiated and its synonym A. pingi (Stephenson, 1925) provisionally revived. New lumbricids are Bimastos parvus (Eisen, 1874), Eisenia japonica (Michaelsen, 1892) and questionably Dendrodrilus rubidus (Savigny, 1826). All confirmed species are common exotics with no endemics. Drawida moniligastrids were not yet located on this remote island for reasons unknown.

  • The bamboo katydid, Palaeoagraecia lutea (Matsumura et Shiraki, 1908) is newly reported in South Korea. Previously, the species was only known in Japan, but currently its occurrence is confirmed in the far southern locality of Hampyeong, Jeollanam-do province of Korean Peninsula. This katydid was collected using a light trap and sound tracing in the bamboo forest. It is regarded as a rare stenotopic species. The features of male Palaeoagraecia lutea are illustrated and discussed in terms of song characteristics, and a key is provided for the genus Palaeoagraecia. A new synonym is proposed: P. philippina (Karny, 1926)=P. globicerata (Vickery et Kevan, 1999) syn. nov.

  • The family Araneidae is a group of orb-weaving spiders and is one of the most diverse groups among the order Araneae. Eighty-one species belonging to 25 genera have been recorded in Korea to date. In this study, four araneid spiders in three genera, viz., Araneus mayumiae, Araneus ogatai, Cyclosa onoi, and Plebs baotianmanensis, were discovered for the first time in Korea. Additionally, Plebs yebongsanensis is removed from synonymy of Plebs sachalinensis, and treated as a new junior synonym of P. baotianmanensis, based on a morphological comparison of females of three Plebs species. Detailed descriptions of four species are provided with accompanying photographs.
