  • Morphological and molecular information of two marine algae collected from Korea is given. One belonging to a green alga, is characterized by small size up to 4 cm high, much branched thalli on all sides, slender and linear branchlets which is constricted near base, axes without prominent branch scars, chloroplasts with a prominent central pyrenoid. The other, as a brown alga, is distinct from other Korean species in having cylindrical elevated projections at all parts of thallus axis, leaves with slightly serrulate margin together with distinct midrib bearing spines and absence to rarely occurred vesicles. In phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, these two species are nested in the same clade with Bryopsis triploramosa and Sargassum polyporum, respectively. In this study, these two species are newly recorded in the Korean marine algal flora based on the morphological and molecular data.

  • The family Melyridae Leach includes more than 300 genera and 6,000 species consisting of four subfamilies (Dasytinae, Malachiinae, Melyrinae, Rhadalinae). Members of the subfamily Malachiinae is distributed all over the world except for New Zealand and prefer warmer, arid or semi-arid regions. Among the malachiine genera, a genus Kuatunia Evers includes 17 species worldwide, mainly distributed in East Asia. In this study, the genus and its described species, Kuatunia oblongula (Kiesenwetter), is newly added to the Korean fauna. A diagnosis, habitus photographs, and illustrations of diagnostic characters are provided, with a key to species of the genus in East Asia.

  • The morphology, anatomy and reproduction (tetra/bisporic and male) of Lithothamnion japonicum Foslie was studied, using holotype material and materials collected from Korea. Lithothamnion japonicum is characterized based on the presence of encrusting, warty to fruticose thallus, branched or unbranched short and cylindrical protuberances, conical shaped spermatangial conceptacles, branched (dendroid) spermatangial systems formed on floor, walls, and roof of conceptacle chamber, cylindrical shaped spermatangial conceptacle canal, 9-10 cell layered spermatangial conceptacle roof, raised tetra/bisporangial conceptacles without rims, flattened tetra/bisporangial conceptacle pore plate, 16-50 pores on each pore plate, 6-8 rosette cells surrounded by each pore, pore canal lining filaments composed of tetra/bisporangial conceptacle roof, and buried senescent tetra/bisporangial conceptacles completely infilled with relatively large and irregularly arranged calcified sterile cells. In this study, we report a new record of Lithothamnion japonicum from Korean coasts.

  • Petrorhagia nanteuilii (Burnat) P. W. Ball & Heywood (Caryophyllaceae), native to western Europe and western North Africa and an introduced or alien plant in South America, Australia, and Japan, was newly found in Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Petrorhagia is clearly distinguished from other genera by a bract at the base of calyx, which differs from Gypsophila L., and commissures at the sepals, which is different from Dianthus L. Petrorhagia nanteuilii grows on slopes and roadsides, suggesting that it is likely to have been introduced through the installation of green sites and road construction. A precise description, illustration, photographs, and a key to related genera and species is provided.

  • A squillid stomatopod, Oratosquilla fabricii, collected from Jindo Island, is reported for the first time in Korea. The family Squillidae differs from other families by the presence of more than four intermediate denticles of telson. This species is distinguished from O. oratoria, another Oratosquilla species recorded in Korea, by the presence of an armed submedian carinae on the fourth abdominal somite and dark patches on the second abdominal somite. In the present study, detailed descriptions and illustrations of O. fabricii are provided. A key to the species of Korean Oratosquilla species is also presented. With this new record, the number of stomatopod species in the Korean fauna has increased to 16.

  • One species of the Herminiinae, Hadennia nakatanii Owada is newly recorded from Korea. Hadennia nakatanii can be distinguished by the light blackish forewing with the relatively thick, transverse medial line, a large light yellowish discal dot, the thick blackish slanted band from the apex to the middle part of the dorsum, and the light blackish hindwing, basally suffused with black and medially broadly suffused with black. The female genitalia can be diagnosed by the simple antrum, the long strongly sclerotized ductus bursae, and the large rectangular corpus bursae with a small uplifted signa patch with minute spicules. We provided the figures of adult and the genitalia with short notes on distribution.

  • A cuckoo wasp species Nipponosega yamanei Kurzenko & Lelej is recorded in Korea for the first time. Of the two forms known from Japan, it is more similar to yamanei-form than kantoensis-form: eye margin almost evenly rounded in frontal view. The species of the two subfamilies, Chrysidinae and Cleptinae, have been listed for the Korean fauna. This species is the first representative of the third subfamily Amiseginae in Korea. It is known to be endemic to Japan. Thus, the distributional range of this species has been extended to the continental part herein. A description is made for further morphological comprehension on the basis of Korean materials.
