The study of Lurelle Van Arsdale Guild (1898-1986)'s vanity table and stool in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum is essential to understand how the stylistic change was made on industrial design in the 1930s caused by economic necessity. The vanity furniture expresses in such relatively inexpensive image transformations that would attract new customers in the Depression. The objects are donated from a collector and became one of CHM's collections in 1997. In curatorial file, other than the designer's and manufacturer's names there is nothing specified for these objects. Therefore, this study is aimed for researching the exact date for these valuable objects for understanding American Art Deco furniture in the 1930s. Moreover, studying social aspect of these objects gives clear vision for the background. Especially, the History of American Standard (Rodengen, 1999) gives great over view to the history of the manufacturer, C. F. Church Company. The record in Fortune of 1934 suggests the designer, Lurelle Guild's position among other industrial designers at that time. And Profoundly, the objects were assigned design patents. Therefore, the vanity furniture set in the CHM was a significant symbol of early modernism rising from functional areas after the Depression.

Designers in Korea have stuck to development of furniture which has high reliance of foreign national resources. They made mistake that they didn't try to make inroads into the world market. They have kept production system of labor intensive method till 1990. They imitated foreign manufactures to win in domestic economy. It became the complete lack of exploitation experience and brought stagnation of design which couldn't defeat. Now Korea is making progressive impression in territory of an electron and information in a foreign market. A new progress of furniture design which was developed centering around a digital suggest a new appearance that will lead a future with modernization in a space of residence. This sis a new starting point which was most completed by anyone. If we will prepare without delay we can take part in a world market with competitive power.

This paper aims to approach a spatial furniture for sedentary lifestyle which been has derived and evolved from Korea's traditional 'Ondol' heating system. In this living culture, people has been staid on the floor where people would sit directly on without furniture such as chair and bed. With every changing technological advances, sedentary life culture is transformed and mixed instead of sedentary habit. Most of people lived in western house such as apartment forms. As time go by, western furnitures were used became widespread. However, during the process, it impossible to acclimate ourselves to the new lifestyle such as chair, bed etc. This leads to users feeling uncomfortable on certain points. The researcher suggests a spatial furniture through a new approach to rest-taking that also intersects the cultures of East and West while resolving the a fore-mentioned issues. The study is conducted as follows. Firstly, issues are discovered through a user's lifestyle to exist usage and interplay of house and furniture. Furthermore, the issues was not a fragmentary thing but more related to a culture and a coustom of long standing. Secondly, a design experiment is conducted to conclude a new form and function that is better fit for the Korean culture where sitting on the floor is the norm. New direction for space that intersects the cultures of the East and West while using modules made convenient for contemporary life is presented. Finally, this study is meaningful in that it reinterprets furniture used for rest within the context of sedentary culture, in order to propose a new direction and value for design that overcomes the boundaries between eastern and western applied to resting space.

Since the 1980s the development of American art furniture was embodied its concept by second-generation furniture artists affected and educated from the first generation that has implanted art furniture fundamental values. Besides, embracing inevitably needs of the new era going with the social change rather than dwell on the nature of mere handicraft era, it has evolved with economic revival in the United States, the attention and increased consumption of the public, and ongoing government-sponsored. And more recently, the American contemporary Art Furniture faces another change in the non-boundary phenomena between art and design. American art furniture since the 1980s are summarized as three major trends: Art furniture embellished with traditional hand-craft, Art furniture featured the individualistic avant-guard characteristic, Art furniture eroded the distinction between art and design. By analyzing focusing on the furniture artists and their works in contemporary art furniture deployment aspects since the 1980s, the purpose of this study can be utilized as a method to measure the forward direction, internationally competitive, creativity, and artistic value of the domestic art furniture.

This paper aimed to suggest a new model of fusion furniture design which fits with our surroundings of today. This was performed by grasp and evaluation of recent trend of fusion culture in Korea in order to apply it to the furniture design of fusion style. Fusion furniture design was tried and applied to the table showing unique characteristics of Korea traditional small dining table with modern touch. The result of this paper could also contribute to distribute the unique characteristics and beauty of Korean traditional furniture in the World.

Through this study, I developed a new-styled desk for public reading in library in consideration of the characteristics of the company "KIFURS Co., Ltd." established and branded by a part of the members of the association 'Gyeonggi-Incheon Furniture Industry Cooperative', in the background of growing library-furniture market situation according to the government policy and the related participations of competitive companies. The differentially designed product was herein presented by introducing the function of office furniture and related material, by giving the existing product some improvements on the basis of the domestic and international data searching. The characteristic of the developed product is that the basic structure of the desk for public reading is easy to assemble & disassemble and also variable to be extended & modified. This basic structure is available to be mass production and to be pricewise through using aluminum. Furthermore it can be used as other library-furniture and office furniture, too. Also the luxury image was pursued by modern shape and different material, unlike the existing library-furniture.

This paper considers Wedding Furniture(new furniture that brides prepare for marriage) design in Korea. Social survey research methods were applied to study wedding furniture from 1960 to 1990. A questionnaires were delivered to 766 urban housewives. As to the statistical methods of the study, descriptive analysis for frequencies, and $X^2-test$ were selectively performed using SPSS PC+ program. the findings are as follows; During this period, Wedding Furniture became an essential Honsu(혼수: wedding gift) item People choose as Wedding Furnitures that serve basic functions of furniture and are traditionally symbols of wedding. They were increased both quantity and quality. Typical Wedding Furnitures of the Modern time were Jangrong(장농: wardrobe for storing clothes and bed clothes), dressing table, wardrobe chest, cupboard and bed. Wedding Furniture items have become more various in kind. Criteria for selecting Wedding Furniture were functionality, affordability, fashion, and decorativeness, tradition and symbolic of marriage. but, The symbolic importance of Wedding Furniture as Honsu will be weakened with the introduction of a variety of electronic appliances.

Handles are very essential element to satisfy function of furniture except for furniture without doors. Moreover, handles of furniture tend to have not only functions for opening and shutting but also decorations for furniture. Among various hardware for furniture, handles are the one who influence furniture's design most. Yet, cases of damages occur due to the fact that there are many copying. Handles have short lives, so that it is economically quiet burden to develop new products in Korea. Therefore, this study aims to inspire necessity of investment for handles and other hardware's development by classifying types of handles, systemizing basic knowledge of design for furniture handles, and realizing the importance of handles within domestic demand.

High glossy painting and UV lithographic painting as painting methods for wooden furniture have played a positive role in enhancing the diversity of furniture design, which has been proved by the analysis on the relationship between the change in the diversity of design and painting methods of graduation projects (wooden furniture) presented by graduates of local universities, as a focus of this article. Since the development of new painting methods has the potential to develop aesthetic characteristics of wooden furniture, many design experiments are needed to improve decorative features of furniture, such as the application of high glossy painting and UV lithographic painting.
