  • Cluster-based wireless sensor network (WSN) can significantly reduce the energy consumption by data aggregation and has been widely used in WSN applications. However, due to the intrinsic many-to-one traffic pattern in WSN, the network lifetime is generally deteriorated by the unbalanced energy consumption in a cluster-based WSN. Therefore, energy efficiency and network lifetime improvement are two crucial and challenging issues in cluster-based WSNs. In this paper, we propose a Non-Uniform Node Distribution (NUND) scheme to improve the energy efficiency and network lifetime in cluster-based WSNs. Specifically, we first propose an analytic model to analyze the energy consumption and the network lifetime of the cluster-based WSNs. Based on the analysis results, we propose a node distribution algorithm to maximize the network lifetime with a fixed number of sensor nodes in cluster-based WSNs. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the theoretical analysis results determined by the proposed analytic model are consistent with the simulation results, and the NUND can significantly improve the energy efficiency and network lifetime.

  • The metropolitan subway network of Seoul has gone through many evolutionary processes in past decades to disperse the floating population and improve the traffic flow. In this study, we analyzed how the structural characteristics and the efficiency of the subway network have changed according to the dynamic evolutionary processes of the metropolitan subway network of Seoul. We have also proposed new measures that can be used to characterize the structural properties of the subway network more practically. It is shown that the global efficiency is about 74%, which is higher than those of subway networks of foreign countries. It should also be considered that passenger flow between stations is even higher, at about 85%. Since the private lines, including line 9, the New Bundang line, the Uijeongbu line, and the Ever line do not release their traffic data since September, 2013, only 5 years of data from September, 2008 to September, 2013 is available. So, in this study we limit the analysis period to these 5 years.

  • ZigBee is the low power, low cost and low data rate wireless personal area network(LR-WPAN) standard. The Directed-Messaging is the protocol which improves the energy efficiency through reducing the redundant message transmission by transmitting messages with directional information toward the specified sub-network area in wireless sensor network using broadcasting. In this paper, we design and implement the experimental grid sensor network using ZigBee modified by the Directed-Messaging for the energy efficiency improvement. The experimental sensor network in this paper is configured with Nano24 supporting the ADV message and the routing management module modified to use the directional information. The energy efficiency improvement of the experimental sensor-network by evaluating the experimental results according to transmitting ADV message.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to optimize energy efficiency in a multi-user decoupled RF energy harvesting network and experiment on the trend of energy efficiency change assuming users' various geographical distribution scenarios. In the RF energy harvesting network where both wireless data transmission and RF energy harvesting are simultaneously performed, the energy efficiency is a key indicator of network performance, and it is necessary to investigate how various factors can affect the energy efficiency. In order to increase energy efficiency effectively, we can confirm that users' distributions are important factors in the RF energy harvesting network from the simulation results.

  • The process model of emotion regulation suggests that cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression engage at different time points in the regulation process. Although multiple brain regions and networks have been identified for each strategy, no articles have explored changes in network characteristics or network connectivity over time. The present study examined (a) the whole-brain network and six other resting-state networks, (b) their modularity and global efficiency, which is an index of the efficiency of information exchange across the network, (c) the degree and betweenness centrality for 160 brain regions to identify the hub nodes with the most control over the entire network, and (d) the intra-network and inter-network functional connectivity (FC). Such investigations were performed using a traditional large-scale FC analysis and a relatively recent sliding window correlation analysis. The results showed that the right inferior orbitofrontal cortex was the hub region of the whole-brain network for both strategies. The present findings of temporally altering functional activity of the networks revealed that the default mode network (DMN) activated at the early stage of reappraisal, followed by the task-positive networks (cingulo-opercular network and fronto-parietal network), emotion-processing networks (the cerebellar network and DMN), and sensorimotor network (SMN) that activated at the early stage of suppression, followed by the greater recruitment of task-positive networks and their functional connection with the emotional response-related networks (SMN and occipital network). This is the first study that provides neuroimaging evidence supporting the process model of emotion regulation by revealing the temporally varying network efficiency and intra- and inter-network functional connections of reappraisal and suppression.

  • In a highly urbanized area, land availability is limited for the installation of space consuming stormwater systems for best management practices (BMPs), leading to the consideration of underground stormwater treatment devices connected to the stormwater pipe system. The configuration of a stormwater pipe network determines the hydrological and pollutant transport characteristics of the stormwater discharged through the pipe network, and thus should be an important design consideration for effective management of stormwater quantity and quality. This article presents a multi-objective optimization approach for designing a stormwater pipe network with on-line stormwater treatment devices to achieve an optimal trade-off between the total installation cost and the annual removal efficiency of total suspended solids (TSS). The Non-dominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) was adapted to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. The study site used to demonstrate the developed approach was a commercial area that has an existing pipe network with eight outfalls into an adjacent stream in Yongin City, South Korea. The stormwater management model (SWMM) was calibrated based on the data obtained from a subcatchment within the study area and was further used to simulate the flow rates and TSS discharge rates through a given pipe network for the entire study area. In the simulation, an underground stormwater treatment device was assumed to be installed at each outfall and sized proportional to the average flow rate at the outfall. The total installation cost for the pipes and underground devices was estimated based on empirical formulas using the flow rates and TSS discharge rates simulated by the SWMM. In the demonstration example, the installation cost could be reduced by up to 9% while the annual TSS removal efficiency could be increased by 4% compared to the original pipe network configuration. The annual TSS removal efficiency was relatively insensitive to the total installation cost in the Pareto-optimal solutions of the pipe network design. The results suggested that the installation cost of the pipes and stormwater treatment devices can be substantially reduced without significantly compromising the pollutant removal efficiency when the pipe network is optimally designed.

  • A network of MAC type was constructed in the Gyeonggi-do area to analyze the usefulness and validity of the Network RTK-GPS. Six sites were selected to conduct GPS observation for 24 hours, and by determining the ITRF of each site, coordinates were determined in connection with IGS network. Then check points which were established in Gimpo area were observed at least 7 times by Network RTK at 20 secs of retrieval intervals. The result showed high accuracy in the difference between the coordinates determined immediately by the in-field network survey and the current performance was 1-2cm. Its biggest benefit is the expanded range of survey and efficiency of practice. In summary, it is proved that a network survey has the accuracy, scalability and efficiency and it is expected that the network survey will contribute to the cadastral survey.

  • The Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is a representative mobile sensor network. MANET is used in various areas because it consists of sensors composed of moving nodes that do not depend on existing infrastructure networks. In the mobile sensor field, the mobility characteristic plays an important role in the performance of the network. Researches on routing techniques are being actively developed in terms of energy efficiency of the entire network. Clustering-based routing protocols show excellent performance in terms of energy efficiency. In this paper, the energy performance according to routing protocols is compared in the MANET to which the same mobility model is adopted.

  • The concept of Internet of Things (IoT) has shed new light on WSN technologies. MAC protocol issues improving the network performance are important in WSNs because of the increase in demand for various applications to secure spectrum resources. Cognitive radio (CR) technology is regarded as a solution to the problems in this future wireless network. In recent years, energy efficiency has become an issue in CR networks. However, few relevant studies have been conducted. In this paper, an energy-efficient non-overlapping channel MAC (ENC-MAC) for CR-enabled sensor networks (CRSNs) is proposed. Applying the dedicated control channel approach, ENC-MAC allows the SUs to utilize channels in a non-overlapping manner, and thus spectrum efficiency is improved. Moreover, the cooperative spectrum sensing that allows an SU to use only two minislots in the sensing phase is addressed to en-hance energy efficiency. In addition, an analytical model for evaluating the performance, such as saturation throughput, average packet delay, and network lifetime, is developed. It is shown in our results that ENC-MAC remarkably outperforms existing MAC protocols.

  • Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks (MWSN) are usually constrained in energy supply, which makes energy efficiency a key factor to extend the network lifetime. The management of the network topology has been widely used as a mechanism to enhance the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSN), and this work presents an alternative to this. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a well-known technology in data center applications that separates the data and control planes during the network management. This paper proposes a solution based on SDN that optimizes the energy use in MWSN. The network intelligence is placed in a controller that can be accessed through different controller gateways within a MWSN. This network intelligence runs a Topology Control (TC) mechanism to build a backbone of coordinator nodes. Therefore, nodes only need to perform forwarding tasks, they reduce message retransmissions and CPU usage. This results in an improvement of the network lifetime. The performance of the proposed solution is evaluated and compared with a distributed approach using the OMNeT++ simulation framework. Results show that the network lifetime increases when 2 or more controller gateways are used.
