Permanent magnets have recently been considered as device that can be used to control the behavior of mechanical systems. Neodymium magnets, a type of permanent magnet, have been used in numerous mechanical devices. These are permanent magnets made from an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron to form the Nd2Fe14B tetragonal crystalline structure. The magnetic selection, magnet core design and mechanical errors of the magnetic component can affect the performance of the magnetic force. In this study, the coercive force, residual induction, and the dimensions of the design parameters of the magnet core are optimized. The design parameters of magnet core are defined as the gap between the magnet and the core, the upper contact radius, and the lower thickness of the core. The force exercised on a permanent magnet in a non-uniform field is dependent on the magnetization orientation of the magnet. Non-uniformity of the polarization direction of the magnetic has been assumed to be caused by the angular error in the polarization direction. The variation in the magnetic performance is considered according to the center distance, the tilt of the magnetic components, and the polarization direction. The finite element method is used to analyze the magnetic force of an optimized cylindrical magnet.
This paper examines permanent magnet eddy current couplings and brakes. Specifically, the effect of permanent magnet magnetization patterns on the magnetic field and force production is investigated. The eddy current couplings and brakes employ high energy-product neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets that act on iron-backed copper drums to provide torque transfer from motor to load without mechanical contact. A 2-dimensional finite element modeling is performed to predict the electromagnetic behavior and the torque-speed characteristics of permanent magnet type eddy current couplings and brakes under constant speed operation.
Neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) sintered magnets have excellent magnetic properties such as the remanence, coercive force, and the maximum energy product compared to other hard magnetic materials. The coercive force of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets is improved by the addition of heavy rare earth elements such as dysprosium and terbium instead of neodymium. Then, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets increases. However, additional elements have increased the production cost of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets. Hence, a study on the control of the microstructure of Nd-Fe-B magnets is being conducted. As the coercive force of magnets improves, the grain size of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grain is close to 300 nm because they are nucleation-type magnets. In this study, fine particles of Nd-Fe-B are prepared with various grinding energies in the pulverization process used for preparing sintered magnets, and the microstructure and magnetic properties of the magnets are investigated.
Permanent-magnet generators have been used for wind turbines for many years. This paper deals with the AFPM(Axial - Flux Permanent Magnet) Generator with a high power-to-weight ratio, dedicated for small wind turbines. The designed and constructed generator as a prototype in this study is a slotless type AFPM Generator with Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnet rotor. Based on that construction, a magnetic circuit analysis of the generator is carried out. Some important equations covering its characteristics and construction are derived and its magnetic and electrical characteristics are investigated.
This paper presents the design and finite-element(FE) analysis of an axial-flux permanent-magnet synchronous generator using neodymium-iron-boron(NdFeB) magnets for directly coupled wind turbines. For the high energy density and light weight, an axial-flux permanent-magnet(PM) generator type is used. The simple magnetic equivalent circuit approach is used for initial design iteration, and the finite-element method is applied to analyze the detailed characteristics.
A brushless and slotless DC linear motor(LDM)employing a movable set of neodymium-iron-boron type of magnets has high performances in advantages of large thrust per weights and accurate position control. But the Moving Magnet LDM produces thrust ripples owing to mainly end-effects, shape and magnetization of permanent magnets and so on. This paper represents the improvements of thrust ripples using the finite elements methods and phase control topology.

Nd-Fe-B type powder was sintered using spark plasma sintering method. Fabricated compact sintered at the temperature of $700\;^{\circ}C$, is found to be a composite magnet with Nd-Fe-Co-B and ${\alpha}-Fe$. The compact sintered at $700\;^{\circ}C$ shows slightly low coercivity and large remanent magnetization comparing to the compact sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ due to the formation of ${\alpha}-Fe$ phase, resulting in the large maximum energy product. Maximum energy product tends to decrease with decreasing thickness of sintered compacts below 0.5 mm in thickness.
A composite bionic soft gripper integrated with electromagnets and magneto-active elastomers is designed by combining the structure of the human hand and the snake's behavior of enhancing friction by actively adjusting the scales. A silicon-based polymer containing magnetized hard magnetic particles is proposed as a soft finger, and it can be reversibly bent by adjusting the magnetic field. Experiments show that the length, width, and height of rectangular soft fingers and the volume ratio of neodymium-iron-boron have different effects on bending angle. The flexible fingers with 20 vol% are the most efficient, which can bend to 90° when the magnetic field is 22 mT. The flexible gripper with four fingers can pick up 10.51 g of objects at the magnetic field of 105 mT. In addition, this composite bionic soft gripper has excellent magnetron performance, and it can change surface like snakes and operate like human hands. This research may help develop soft devices for magnetic field control and try to provide new solutions for soft grasping.
In this paper, two different electromagnetic energy harvesters using bulk micromachined silicon spiral springs and Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) packaging technique have been fabricated, characterized, and compared to generate electrical energy from ultra-low ambient vibrations under 0.3g. The proposed energy harvesters were comprised of a highly miniaturized Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnet, silicon spiral spring, multi-turned copper coil, and PDMS housing in order to improve the electrical output powers and reduce their sizes/volumes. When an external vibration moves directly the magnet mounted as a seismic mass at the center of the spiral spring, the mechanical energy of the moving mass is transformed to electrical energy through the 183 turns of solenoid copper coils. The silicon spiral springs were applied to generate high electrical output power by maximizing the deflection of the movable mass at the low level vibrations. The fabricated energy harvesters using these two different spiral springs exhibited the resonant frequencies of 36Hz and 63Hz and the optimal load resistances of $99{\Omega}$ and $55{\Omega}$, respectively. In particular, the energy harvester using the spiral spring with two links exhibited much better linearity characteristics than the one with four links. It generated $29.02{\mu}W$ of output power and 107.3mV of load voltage at the vibration acceleration of 0.3g. It also exhibited power density and normalized power density of $48.37{\mu}W{\cdot}cm-3$ and $537.41{\mu}W{\cdot}cm-3{\cdot}g-2$, respectively. The total volume of the fabricated energy harvesters was $1cm{\times}1cm{\times}0.6cm$ (height).

An electromechanical type is the most useful mechanism in the various pumping mechanisms. It, however, requires a movement converting system including a ball screw, a helical cam, or a solenoid-beam spring, which makes the device complex and may lessen reliability. Thus, the authors have hypothesized that an electromagnetic actuator mechanism can eliminate the movement converting system and that thereby enhance the mechanical reliability and operative simplicity of an electropneumatic pump. The purpose of this study was to show a novel application of electromagnetic actuator mechanism in pulsatile pump and to provide preliminary data for further evaluations. The electromagnetic actuator consists of stators with a single winding excitation coil and movers with a high energy density neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnet. A 0.5mm diameter wire was used for the excitation coil, and 1000 turns were wound onto the stators core with parallel. A prototype of extracorporeal electro-pneumatic pump was constructed, and the pump performance tests were performed using a mock system to evaluate the efficiency of the electromagnetic actuator mechanism. When forward and backward electric currents were supplied to the excitation coil, the mover effectively moved back and forth. The nominal stroke length of the actuator was 10mm. The actuator dimension was 120mm in diameter and 65mm in height with a mass of 1.4kg. The prototype pump unit was 150mm in diameter, 150mm in thickness and 4.5kg in weight. The maximum force output was 70N at input current of 4.5A and the maximum pump rate was 150 beats per minute. The maximum output was 2.0 L/minute at a rate of 80bpm when the afterload was 100mmHg. The electromagnetic actuator mechanism was successfully applied to construct the prototype of extracorporeal electropneumatic pump. The authors provide the above results as a preliminary data for further studies.
