The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among women's leisure dance participation, physical image and self-esteem. The subjects in this study were 300 female adults who were selected by cluster sampling from the population that consisted of women who were in their 20s to 50s. In the population, some women got leisure dance at fitness clubs, sport lovers' clubs and dance academies in Seoul and Gyeoggn Province as of 2009, and the others didn't. As for the reliability of the questionnaires used in the study, the Cronbach alpha coefficient of the questionnaires was above .70. The major statistical methods utilized in this study were Frequencies, reliability factor analysis, analysis covariate, regression analysis and path analysis. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the women who got leisuer dance evaluated their own physical image and self-esteem more favorably than the others who didn't. Second, the length of participation affected the body shape, satisfaction level and flexibility, and the intensity of participation impacted on the body shape and muscular power. Third, the length of participation had an impact on self-esteem, and the frequency of participation exerted a negative influence on that. Fourth, the degree of participation had a causal impact on physical image and self-esteem. In other words, the degree of getting leisure dance affected self-esteem in a firsthand manner and exerted a secondhand influence on that through physical image as well. The findings of the study suggested that physical image was one of major parameters to link participation in rhythmic exercise and self-esteem.

This study has analyzed females' motives and psychological experiences related to appearance-enhancement seeking behavior(weight control practice and cosmetic surgery). In this study, in-depth interviews were carried out to 11 females who had experienced weight control practices and cosmetic surgery in June 2001. There is social standard in ideal body image. One perceive a physical idea and own body through society(mass media, reference group), others and clothing, and recognize the ideal body and internalize the social standard as own worth. The discrepancies between ideal body image internalized as standards of own worth and real body image became a setup for body dissatisfaction. Increasing in body dissatisfaction, rejection of own body grow, furthermore body is perceived with distortion. In order to remove a negative body image and to reach ideal body image, appearance-enhancement seeking behavior such as weight control and cosmetic surgery is made. By appearance enhancing, one come to closer to ideal image of which one pursuit oneself. Therefore body satisfaction feeling increase, self·esteem rise, manner of life and character change to with affirmation. Otherwise, strengthening of appearance-concern and of appearance enhancement seeking desire has the possibility of developing into bulimia and cosmetic surgery addiction. Also, the standard of beauty in appearance rise by degrees, and that produces motives of appearance-enhancement seeking behavior.
Objectives : This study examined the association between body mass index(BMI) and psychological factors; self-esteem, depression, restraint eating, disinhibition, and hunger. The difference of TFEQ(restraint eating, disinhibition and hunger) was analyzed in variety of current diet situations. Methods : The research was based on a sample of people who visited our website and submit the result of self test(self-esteem n=3183; TFEQ n=5167; BDI n=2457). Results : Self-esteem and BDI was slightly correlated with BMI. There is negative correlation between restraint eating and BMI and positive correlations were observed between hunger and BMI, and disinhibition and BMI. We studied diet situation and eating habits. We divided the sample into 4 groups in accordance with self-submitted result: non-diet group(n=2806), diet-failed group within 3 months group(n=371), maintaining group after successful-diet(n=233), on-going diet group(n=1757) As to restraint eating, non-diet group showed the lowest score in restraint eating and maintaining group after successful-diet showed the highest. The score in disinhibition and hunger was significantly lower in maintaining group after successful-diet group than one in diet-failed group. Conclusion : These results suggest that it would be essential to treat these psychological factors such as depression and self-esteem in weight loss program. Considering the result in diet-situation and TFEQ, we insist that restraint-eating and disinhibition should be controlled. If these psychological factors were not treated in place, even the successful diet might turn out to be a worse situation like binge-eating
This study aimed to identify factors influencing depression in married middle-aged men. Subjects were 141 married middle-aged men (40~60 years) living in C and D city. Questionnaires included general characteristics, body mass index, marital intimacy, self-esteem, life event stress, and depression. Data were collected from August 15 to October 20, 2020. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression using SPSS Win 23.0. As a results, depression had a significantly negative correlation with marital intimacy (r=-.44, p<.001) and self-esteem (β=-.40, p<.001). Self-esteem had a significantly positive correlation with marital intimacy (r=.48, p<.001). Factors influencing depression in marital middle-aged men were marital intimacy (β=-.24, p=.003) and self-esteem (β=-.40, p<.001). These variables explained 32.1% of depression. To reduce depression of married middle-aged men, nursing strategies considering marital intimacy and self-esteem must be provided to the middle-aged men.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the degree of health behavior, body composition and body image in college women by BMI. The purpose of this study was to compare the influences of men's and women's sex role identities and sex role discrepancies on their appearance satisfaction and self esteem. Congruency theory, androgyny theory, masculinity theory and self discrepancy theory were used to explore the influence of sex roles on appearance satisfaction and self esteem. Theories suggest that the influence would be different by gender. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 125 men and 197 women aged between 20 and 40 years living in the Seoul metropolitan area. Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the data. For men, both appearance satisfaction and self esteem were influenced only by their perceived masculinity. For women, however, perceived femininity, femininity discrepancy and masculinity discrepancy had an influence on appearance satisfaction. All the four sex role variables had an influence on women's self esteem. BMI had a negative effect on self esteem for women, but no effect for men. According to the results, unlike men, whose appearance satisfaction and self esteem are only determined by how masculine they are, the women's levels of appearance satisfaction and self esteem are influenced not only by how feminine they are, but also by how masculine and feminine they want to be. The results of this study have implications for body image counselors or practitioners who try to help young women increase their self esteem and satisfaction to their appearance.

Today, obesity is not recognized as a disease itself but is known to be the indirect cause of much chronic illness. Obesity has an impact on psychological disorders including severe inferiority, damage of body self-image, low self-esteem, personality disorders. The results in an increase of the mortality rate. Therefore, this study attempts to discover and evaluate stressful experience in obese teenagers. For this study, 21 girl students and 19 boy students in Pusan middle or high school located were selected. The data were collected from March to May at 1999. A tape-recorder was used under the permission of the subjects to prevent the loss of spoken information and communication. This study consisted of 563 reponses from girls and 461 responses from boys which were then classified with descriptive expressions and priority classifications. The results generated 72 common elements in girls and 54 common elements in boys. From these elements 24 syntheses of hypothetical definitions and 8 identifications of the structural definitions in both girls and boys were developed. The structural and hypothetical definitions were as follows: The analysis of the data was made through a phenomenological analytic method suggested by Van kamm, which is as follows: 1. Maladjustment to school life; lack of understanding of the teacher, insufficient exercise ability, and a feeling of burden in attending the school obesity program. 2. Conflict in family relationships; lack of understanding from the family, a feeling of alienation. 3. Conflict in friend relationships; lack of understanding among friends, constant comparisons in appearance and body with friends (in girls) and estrangement from friends (in boys). 4. Conflict in acquaintance of the opposite sex; hoping to meet the opposite sex, lack of understanding of boy friends (in girls), feelings of pain, feelings of anxiety (in girls) feelings of burden (in girls) feelings of envy (in boys). 5. Negative body image: shape of body; feelings of pain; feelings of powerlessness; feelings of discomfort, and reception; emotional disorders (in boys), and change of personality (in boys). 6. Health disorder: Physical and psychological discomfort. 7. Feelings of burden in weight control; negative experiences in weight control, interference with family and friends, the difficulty in diet therapy, feelings of burden in exercise (in girls), to be teased by the public through mass media (in boys).
Dieting behaviors prevail among most women and are highly increasing among female adolescents who don't have to lose weight. The dieting behaviors of normal or low weight groups are highly related to the negative impact of health risk behaviors. We need a strategy for intervening in the dieting behaviors of relevant groups. With this background, a study was conducted to examine the current situation of dieting behaviors and related factors in middle school girls, and to provide guidelines for the relevant dieting group. This survey was carried out by self-questionnaires passed out to 901 middle school girls from 3 middle schools in Seoul. Data were collected from April 10th, 2000 to April 17th, 2000 and 794 respondents' data were finally selected for analysis. The instruments of this study were Shin's scale for effects of mass-media, Birleson's depression self-rating scale translated by shim, Rosenberg's self-esteem scale, Smilkstein's Family APGAR score translated by Yoon, Kim's school-related adjustment scale. The credibility of instruments was 0.41~0.83 in the pilot study and 0.70~0.86 in the main study. The summary of results was as follows: 1. The general characteristics of respondents were analyzed. In comparison of grade and dieting behaviors, the subjects of the group perceived that their body image was obeser than their real body image and their ideal body image was slenderer than their current body image. A dieter's body image was seriously distorted. 2. The dieting behaviors were analyzed. The Subjects' BMI was within the normal to low range -- they didn't have to lose weight. But actually 47.3% of the respondents were dieters. Their main dieting methods were exercise(71.8%), computer games(64.9%) such as DDR and pump, and intake reduction(64.1%). Most dieters were using desirable methods such as exercise and intake control. But unhealthy methods such as saunax, smoking and harmful drug-use were also used by a few dieters. The main reason for dieting was attractiveness. The chief resources of dieting methods were mass-media(67.8%), friends(64.3%), and parents & relatives(35.1%). Only a few subjects obtained the information from health professionals. While they were trying to lose weight, 42.1% of the subjects experienced side effects such as dizziness(45.0%), apathy(20.5%), appetite loss(18.5%), amenorrhea and the irregularity of the menstrual cycle(16.6%). 3. The relationship between dieting behaviors and factors was analyzed. Dieting behaviors were significantly related to the experience of menarche, the experience of dating with heterosexuals, perceived body image, self-esteem, depression, family's relationship, school instruction-related adjustment, school life-related adjustment, and the effect of mass-media. After that, the multiple logistic regression was used. The analysis revealed that dating, perceived body image, the experience of menarche and the effect of mass media were significant factors. In conclusion, strategies for preventing irrelevant dieting behaviors are urgently required to enhance female adolescents' ability to choose the right information from countless others and to recognize their optimum body image.
