  • In this paper, a detection algorithm for the removal of needle in oriental clinic is presented. First, in the proposed method, the candidate areas of each needle penetrated are selected by using the RGB color information of needle head, and the false candidates are removed by considering their area size. Next, two main edges of the needle are extracted through using the edges of selected candidate areas and their radon transformation. The final verification of penetrated needle is accomplished by using the morphological analysis of these two edge lines. In the experiments, the detection rate of proposed method reaches to 99% for the 36 images containing 294 needles.

  • Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a very useful tool in the preoperative diagnosis of lesions of the salivary gland. Surgical therapy of high-grade malignancies (salivary duct carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, squamous cellcarcinoma, carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, small cell carcinoma, and sebaceous carcinoma) is different from that of benign lesions or low-grade malignancies. Therefore, the recognition of high-grade malignancies is important in salivary gland FNAC. Although recognition of high-grade malignancies of the salivary gland by FNAC is not difficult, precise classification of these malignancies is often impossible. Additionally, because of its rarity, FNAC of spindle cells and mesenchymal lesions of the salivary glands is a tool that is not familiar to many cytopathologists. The characteristic cytomorphologic features of these lesions are reviewed here with a discussion of specific diagnostic problems.

  • "Watoji" is a Japanese traditional book binding technique. An aim of this research develops a support system which everyone can make Watoji easily by. This system uses a working situation by recognizing a position of a needle and annotating to a book directly by mixed reality technique. Additionally, a technique of recognizing a working situation at a book is sewn by a needle is proposed. The proposed system of recognizing a position of a needle is build, then we experiment recognizing of a needle from an image. Furthermore, setting up Watoji on the system, we experiment recognizing of a position of a needle. An experimental result shows recognizing a needle from an acquired image from a camera. Using this result, a working situation can be recognized. Then, suitable information to a working situation can be presented.

  • In this work, two approaches were proposed for the recognition of partial discharge patterns. The first approach was neural network with backpropagation algorithm, and the second approach was angle calculation between two operator vectors. PD signal were detected using three electrode systems; IEC(b), needle-plane and CIGRE method II electrode system. Both of neural network and angle comparison method showed good recognition performance for the patte군 similar to the trained patterns. And the number of operators to be used had a great influence on the recognition performance to the untrained patterns.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels in student nurse of knowledge, compliance and risk factor recognition for needlestick injuries. Method: Nine hundred and thirty eight(938) student nurse from 3 universities and 3 junior colleges participated in this study. Completed questionnaires were collected between October and November 2004. They were analyzed by using the descriptive statistics and $x^2$-test, t-test with the SAS program, Results: There were no significant differences in the general characteristics of participants between the two groups-Needlestick Injury(NSI) group and non-Needle stick Injury(non-NSI) group. The scores for knowledge levels of treatment after needle stick injuries and the risk factor recognition level were significantly higher in the NSI group. The scores for performance level as to handling and using needles after needlestick injuries were significantly higher in the non-NSI group. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a preventive program to decrease the needlestick injury rate among student nurse.

  • A case of Burkitt lymphoma diagnosed through fine needle aspiration cytology is described, A 66-year-old man presented with lymphadenopathy on the right cervical neck and axillary area. An ultrasonogram and CT scan for the cervical neck showed a multiple variable sized lymphadenopathy with pericapsular invasion and necrotic foci, Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the cervical lymph nodes revealed very cellular and necrotic smears consisting of diffusely scattered intermediate monotonous round cells, tingible body macrophages and many mitotic figures. Histological features of the excised lymph nodes showed the classic morphological features of Burkitt lymphoma. Recognition of the characteristic cytological features can suggest the possibility of Burkitt lymphoma.

  • Objectives : Needle sickness is one of the adverse events of acupuncture, although substantial adverse effects during a routine acupuncture treatment seem to be highly unusual. In this work, we propose that an acupuncture-related vasovagal response resembles needle sickness during acupuncture therapy. Methods : In this article, we discussed the general characteristics of vasovagal syncope and went into more detail on vasovagal syncope in people who have a fear of blood injection and injury. We also offer a recommendation for the prevention and management of vasovagal syncope brought on by acupuncture. Results : The vasovagal reaction related to acupuncture is closely associated with needle sickness. The prevention can be done using PEACHES (position, experience, anxiety, constitution, hydration, environment, symptom recognition) principles. The management should be conducted using the RIPCORD (recognize, initiate, position, communicate, order treatments, reassess, document) techniques. Conclusions : It is important to comprehend the characteristics of needle sickness as a vasovagal reaction related to acupuncture. According to the recommendation, practitioners should effectively prevent and manage needle sickness.

  • This paper is pre-stage for getting EGI which can be used for modeling of an object. It discusses the construction of the vision processing system and its algorithm for getting needle diagram from tie object image. We realize the algorithm with monocular camera system, using Reflectance Map theory and photometric stereo method. We can calculate the surface normal at any point in the image if we take multiple images at the different lighting conditions. From the 3 images taken from different lighting conditions through the experiment, we get the needle diagrams of the sphere and the object. We confirm the validness of the surface, normal acquisition algorithm comparing the experimental needle diagram with the ideal one obtained from the surface normal of the known object.

  • Eccrine spiradenoma is a rare adnexal tumor of the skin and its cytomorphology has seldom been described in literature. To evaluate the cytologic features and diagnostic pitfalls of eccrine spiradenoma, we report a case of 33-year-old male whose clinical presentation was a painful subcutaneous mass at the right preauricular area. Fine needle aspirates revealed tight clusters of multilayered, uniform, cuboidal cells arranged around hyalinized perivascular spaces. Some epithelial cells showed tubules or rosette formations. The background showed scattered, naked nuclei. The histologic findings confirmed the eccrine spiradenoma. The recognition of peculiar cytologic features and clinical correlation could be helpful in the diagnosis of skin adnexal tumors.

  • We describe two cases of metastatic Wilms' tumor in the lung with emphasis on the cytologic features of specimens obtained by needle aspiration. One of them was extrarenal Wilms' tumor. The findings were correlated with the histopathologic features of the primary lesion. Cellular components in the fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) slides included blastemal, epithelial, stromal and inflammatory cells with immature tubular differentiation and rosette formation. Recognition of these cellular components in FNAC smears help in establishing FNAC diagnosis of Wilms' tumor. The blastemal cells were represented by small to medium sized cells with scanty cytoplasm having ill-defined borders and round to slightly oval nuclei with evenly dispersed chromatin and small marginated nucleoli. They were seen in our two cases. The differential diagnosis includes neuroblastoma, malignant lymphoma, malignant rhabdoid tumor, clear cell sarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma and embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. In conclusion, making a definite cytologic diagnosis of metastatic Wilms' tumor may be possible by light and electron microscopy and immunohistochemical staining. The above findings may contribute to the diagnosis of FNAC of metastatic Wilms' tumor.
