  • Background: This study aimed to investigate the effect of elastic band-resistive exercise using audio-visual medium on pain, proprioception, and motor function in adults with chronic neck and shoulder pain. Design: One group pretest-posttest follow-up experimental design. Method: Twenty adult women with neck and shoulder pain voluntarily participated in this study. Elastic band-resistive exercise using audio-visual medium including cervical flexion and extension, shoulder external rotation, and scapular retraction-protraction motions was conducted 5 times a week for 3 weeks. The Numerical Rating Scale, pressure threshold tool, CROM goniometer, and Image J software were used to assess subjective pain level, tenderness threshold (pain), joint position sense error (proprioception), joint range of motion, and postural alignment (motor function), respectively. Result:: The pain intensity and threshold and joint position sense error showed significant decreases after the intervention, whereas the joint range of motion angle revealed significant increases. The postural alignment including forward head posture and rounded shoulder revealed significant improvements after the intervention. Conclusions: Therefore, we suggest that elastic band-resistive exercise through audio-visual medium would be helpful in preventing and managing pain and physical dysfunction in individuals with chronic neck and shoulder pain, and then it would support the development of health management-related online education content.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of Kinesiology taping followed by pectoralis minor muscle self-stretching on the rounded shoulder posture, neck range of motion, and upper trapezius muscle tone in subjects with a rounded shoulder posture. METHODS: Thirty adults with a rounded shoulder posture were assigned randomly to one of two groups, either one that only performed pectoralis minor muscle self-stretching or a group that performed pectoralis minor muscle self-stretching after applying Kinesiology taping ; the subjects underwent four weeks of intervention. Three rounds of intervention were carried out over four weeks, and before and after the experiment, rounded shoulder posture, neck range of motion, and upper trapezius muscle tone creep were measured. RESULTS: Following the interventions, both the experimental and control groups showed significant improvement in the rounded shoulder posture, neck range of motion, upper trapezius muscle tone, stiffness, relaxation, and creep. Significant differences in the post training gains in the rounded shoulder posture and neck range of motion were observed between the experimental and control groups. CONCLUSION: These results showed that a combination of Kinesiology taping and pectoralis minor muscle self-s tretching led to more significant improvement than that seen when only utilizing the application of pectoralis minor muscle self-stretching to change the posture of the subjects with a rounded shoulder posture.

  • In this study, we analyzed the results of virtual clothing simulation according to the difference in the lateral neck point as well as the front and back shoulder inclination angles of the bodice foundation. Lim's (2016) (S) and Lee's (1999) method (L) were selected as the different setting for the lateral neck point. S1, S2, L1 and L2 were developed by changing the shoulder inclination angles. The SND and LND were developed by removing the darts in the S and L, respectively; in addition, the SND1, SND2, LND1, and LND2 were developed with different shoulder inclination angles. The results of S and L were similar with only slight differences observed in the armhole shape. However, the results of SND and LND were very different. The patterns of the S series were similar to each other, but the patterns of the L series were different. In addition, the patterns of the SND and LND series could not find a similar trend.

  • We report two cases of migration of K-wires from the acromioclavicular joint to the neck. A 73-year-old man complained of right shoulder pain for one month and had undergone orthopedic surgery because of acromioclavicular joint dislocation about 27 years earlier. Another 56-year-old man complained of left shoulder pain and neck pain for 5 years and had undergone orthopedic surgery because of acromioclavicular joint dislocation about 25 years earlier. In both cases, we took X-rays to look for the cause of shoulder pain and discovered broken and migrated K-wires in the neck. We removed the K-wires from the trapezius muscle and the paraspinal muscle respectively. K-wire fixation technique is simple and effective but should be followed up with X-rays periodically. In addition, we should warn patients of the possibility of migration of K-wire. And it is desirable for us to avoid using K-wire near major neurovascular structures like the sternoclavicular joint and the clavicle.

  • This study investigates the effects of aroma neck and shoulder massage and Red LED irradiation on cutaneous microcirculation in the neck area. In this study, 30 women aged 20 to 60 were randomly assigned to three experimental groups. Group A (n=10) received Red LED irradiation after aroma neck and shoulder massage, while Group B (n=10) rested for 15 minutes after aroma neck and shoulder massage. Group C (n=10) only received Red LED irradiation. The results showed significant main effects of time between the baseline and post-treatment measurements in Groups A and B (F = 29.883, p < 0.001, 𝜂2 = 0.624), however, the main effects of the groups were not significant (F = 0.202, p = 0.659, 𝜂2 = 0.011), but there was a significant interaction between group and time (F = 8.452, p = 0.001, 𝜂2 = 0.320). There were no significant statistical differences in cutaneous microcirculation in the neck area after treatment in Group C (p > 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.202). In conclusion, Red LED treatment demonstrates limited effects on cutaneous microcirculation in the neck area, differentiating with the results of Groups A and B. Specifically, the combined effect of aroma neck and shoulder massage and Red LED treatment in Group A was not significant.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the effects of the acupuncture therapy in combination with Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy on acute whiplash injury by traffic accident. And thermal change of posterior neck and shoulder was observed. Methods : The clinical study was conducted to 20 cases of acute whiplash injury patients who had been admitted in Dept. of Acupuncture and Moxibusion, Woosuk University Hospital from December 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. In one group(test group), patients were treated with the acupuncture therapy in combination with Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy. And in the other group(control group), patients were treated with acupuncture therapy only. To estimate the efficacy of treatments, visual analog scale(VAS), neck disability index(NDI) of posterior neck pain were checked. And also thermal change of posterior neck and shoulder was observed by digital infrared thermographic imaging(DITI). Results : Both group represented effective improvement in VAS and NDI of posterior neck pain. Especially, test group is more effective than control group in VAS comparison, statistically. In test group, temperature of posterior neck and shoulder was decreased after treatments. But there was no significant difference between two groups on thermographic change. Conclusions : Through this study, Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy is considered to be effective for reducing pain in acute whiplash injury patients. And after Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy, temperature of posterior neck and shoulder show a tendency to decrease.

  • Many WMSDs(work-related-musculoskeletal disorders) have been reported in diverse industries and have also attracted much attention in recent years. Neck-related MSD is generally known as one of common WMSDs, especially it happens to workers who are working at the automobile assembly plants and/or shipyards. The awkward posture is considered as a main cause of neck-related MSDs. A neck supporter was developed to prevent neck-related MSDs, and 10 males were recruited to evaluate the newly developed neck supporter by measuring subjective discomfort ratings of whole body, shoulder, neck and neck-muscle activities. Muscle activities from four neck muscle groups(left/right sternocleidomastoid and upper/middle trapezius) were measured while simulating an automobile assembly task. Results showed that the neck supporter help to significantly improve subjective discomfort for whole-body, shoulder as well as neck body parts. The analyses of muscular activities also showed that the activities of left/right sternocleidomastoid muscles were statistically decreased with the neck supporter in this study. The muscle activities of upper/middle trapezius in case of wearing the neck supporter were not significantly different with the muscle activities in case of no-wearing the neck supporter. Overall findings verified that the neck supporter might help to prevent neck-related MSDs based on the current study.

  • With the wide range of movement, the movement of neck accompanies the body surface change of neck and shoulders. And neck corresponds to the collar of garment, meaning that the body surface change of this part affects the construction of patterns for collars. So the purpose of this study was to manifest the changes of body surface in the neck and shoulder accompanied with the movement of the neck and to draw up the facts worth consideration when constructing the collar pattern. In this study, the draft of body surface of neck and shoulder was drawn up by gypsum method according to the 5 movements (standing at attention, neck bending - front, back, right, left). The length of body surface was measured and analyzed by ANOVA, post hoc test, correlation and regression analysis using SPSS 10.0 for Windows. The variation of the surface of neck was remarkable in the vertical lines than the horizontal ones. So the height of collar should be established considering the range of movement of the neck. It was the raising amount of c.f(center front) of neck and girth of neckbase (back) that were proved to have significantly varied after movement. With correlation analysis done, in every movement, the raising amount of side and the girth of neckbase had remarkably positive relation. The movement of the neck accompanied the variation of body surface in the shoulder as well. It was the part of scapula and side of neckbase that the variation was notable, suggesting that the surplus is needed in these parts.

  • Draping design system organized by European about 13C has been developed greatly for a long while, but for the purpose of the practical use the Dress form similar to human body has been needed. In order to make three-dimensional effect as fitting Muslin ot the Dress form. the Basic lien has to be established in Muslin and Dress form each. At this time, Shoulder-blade level is indicated from various angles : measure down 10cm from the back neck point, a quarter of the back neck point to the waist lie, the half-way point between neckline and bust line, measure down 41 inches from the back neck line, measure down 3 inches from the top edge of the muslin at center back and cross mark for neck line, and so forth. This study established the Basic line through the two ways of them (B.N.P∼B.L/2, B.N.P∼W.L/4), did tight fitting to the 5 kinds of Dress forms which ar normal type in the drop value(the difference between hip circumference and bust circumference), and acquired Basic Pattern. After the experiment, fitness are throughly investigate by statistical analysis of measurements. As a result, this study finds out that fit is proper when shoulder blade level is situated on a fourth of the back neck point to the waist line and a quarter point between back neck point and waist line, and waist dart is situated on the back center line and princess line.
