  • The fluorene-degrading strain Sphingobacterium sp. KM-02 was isolated from PAHs-contaminated soil near a mineimpacted area by selective enrichment techniques. Fluorene added to the Sphingobacterium sp. KM-02 culture as sole carbon source was 78.4% removed within 120 h. A fluorene degradation pathway is tentatively proposed based on identification of the metabolic intermediates 9-fluorenone, 4-hydroxy-9-fluorenone, and 8-hydroxy-3,4-benzocoumarin. Further the ability of Sphingobacterium sp. KM-02 to bioremediate 100 mg/kg fluorene in soil matrix was examined by composting under laboratory conditions. Treatment of microcosm soil with the strain KM-02 for 20 days resulted in a 65.6% reduction in total amounts. These results demonstrate that Sphingobacterium sp. KM-02 could potentially be used in the bioremediation of fluorene from contaminated soil.

  • Seven new species of two genera Scalarispongia and Smenospongia (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Thorectidae) are described from Gageo Island and Jeju Island, Korea. Five new species of Scalarispongia are compared to nine reported species of the genus by the skeletal structure. Scalarispongia viridis n. sp. has regular ladder-like skeletal pattern arranged throughout the sponge body and has pseudo-tertiary fibres. Scalarispongia favus n. sp. is characterized by the honeycomb shape of the surface and is similar to Sc. flava in skeletal structure, but differs in sponge shape. Scalarispongia lenis n. sp. is similar to Sc. regularis in skeletal structure but has fibers that are smaller in size. Scalarispongia canus n. sp. has irregular skeletal structure in three dimensions and ladder-like which comes out of the surface and choanosome. Scalarispongia subjiensis n. sp. has pseudo-tertiary fibres and its regular ladder-like skeletal pattern occurs at the choanosome. Two new species of Smenospongia are distinguished from the other 19 reported species of the genus by the skeletal structure. Smenospongia aspera n. sp. is similar to Sm. coreana in sponge shape but new species has rarely secondary web and thin and thick bridged fibres at near surface. Smenospongia mureungensis n. sp. has very simple skeletal structure.

  • The monthly variations of zooplankton community were investigated at 12 stations near Tongyeong and Namhaedo in the South Sea of Korea from April to July, 2012. Zooplankton samples were collected by a plankton net (RN80) from near the bottom to the surface. Zooplankton community consisted of 97 taxa, and the mean abundance ranged from $213inds.m^{-3}$ in July to $426inds.m^{-3}$ in April. Copepods constituted 38.98% of zooplankton abundance, and included 39 species. Calanus sinicus, Corycaeus affinis, Paracalanus parvus s.l., copepodids, Evadne nordmonni, Podon leuckarti, cirriped nauplii, Muggiacea sp., Diphyes sp., and Zonosagitta bedoti were dominant species. Of these, Calanus sinicus was the most abundant throughout the study period, being constituted 18.6% of total zooplankton abundance. The density variations of dominant species between stations and months were correlated with the environmental factors. Zooplankton community varied with by sampling months, being influenced by monthly oceanographic variations.

  • Fusarium wilt of lisianthus occurred severely throughout all cultivation areas, especially in alpoine areas during summer season and the disease incidence was 5 to 30 percent in Korea. The major symptoms of the disease were wilt with chlorosis and water deficiency, stunted plants and scorched leaves. Severe symptoms appeared just after high temperature period around late August in Daekwallyong area. Whit and pale red colored mycelia were developed on stems of infected plants near the soil surface. The causal organism of Fusarium wilt of lisianthus was isolated and identified as Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. eustomae on the basis of pathogenic and cultural characteristics. The causal organism was reisolated from all infected and inoculated stems of plants. This is the first report referring to F. oxysporum f. sp. eustomae of lisianthus in Korea.

  • New Korean lumbricids are described: Eisenia gaga Blakemore sp. nov. from remote Gageodo Island and E. sindo Blakemore, sp. nov. from an island at Incheon. Both are comparable to Eisenia koreana (Zicsi, 1972) from near Pyongyang, North Korea. A remarkable yet previously unrecognized similarity to American earthworm Eisenoides carolinensis (Michaelsen, 1910) is discussed, but synonymy is rejected on tenuous morphological grounds (form of nephridial vesicle bladders) with taxonomy supported by objective molecular data (mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 barcodes).

  • The phylogenetic diversity of the bacteria in hot composting samples collected from three spatial locations was investigated by molecular tools in order to determine the influence of gradient effect on bacterial communities during the thermophilic phase of composting swine manure with rice straw. Total microbial DNA was extracted and bacterial near full-length 16S rRNA genes were subsequently amplified, cloned, restriction fragment length polymorphism-screened and sequenced. The superstratum sample had the highest microbial diversity among the three samples which was possibly related to the surrounding conditions of the sample resulting from the location. The results showed that the sequences related to Bacillus sp. were most common in the composts. In superstratum sample, 45 clones (33%) and 36 clones (27%) were affiliated with the Bacillus sp. and Clostridium sp., respectively; 74 clones (58%) were affiliated with the Clostridium sp. in the middle-level sample; 52 clones (40%) and 29 clones (23%) were affiliated with the Clostridium sp. and Bacillus sp. in substrate sample, respectively. It indicated that the microbial diversity and community in the samples were different for each sampling site, and different locations of the same pile often contained distinct and different microbial communities.
