  • We present the results of near-IR band (JHK) photometric study for the old open cluster To 2. Combined with existing optical data, our IR photometry is used to derive the reddening E(B- V)=0.24$\pm$0.12 and the distance (m-M)o=14.6$\pm$0.42. Comparison with theoretical isochrones suggests the age and metallicity of To 2 are log t$\~$9.3 and [Fe/H]$\~$-0.3, respectively.

  • We present near-infrared (0.8 - 1.8 microns) spectra of 63 bright (J_mag < 10) stars observed with Low Resolution Spectrometer (LRS) onboard the rocket-borne Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER). Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) photometry information is used to find cross-matched stars after reduction and extraction of the spectra. We identify the spectral types of observed stars by comparing with spectral templates from the Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) library. All the observed spectra are consistent with late F to M stellar spectral types, and we identify various infrared absorption lines. As our observations are performed above the Earth's atmosphere, our spectra are free from telluric contamination. Including HST/NICMOS and Cassini/VIMS, the spectral coverage has rarely been achieved in space, and the methods developed here can inform statistical studies with future low-resolution spectral measurements such as GAIA photometric and radial velocity spectrometer.

  • We study the near-infrared photometric properties of red-supergiant stars (RSGs) in three nearby galaxies located within 15 Mpc: NGC 4214, NGC 4736 and NGC 5194 / NGC 5195. The near-infrared (JHK) imaging data were obtained using the WFCAM detector mounted on UKIRT telescope in Hawaii. We used the DAOPHOT/ALLSTAR pacakge to carry out the photometry. We applied MARCS synthetic fluxes to estimate the effective temperatures and luminosities of the RSGs in all the three galaxies. The results were plotted in the Hertzsprung-Russell(H-R) diagram along with the theoretical evolutionary tracks with different masses. We explore the spatial correlation between the RSGs and H II regions by examing the H-R diagram of the RSGs in the dominant H II regions for each of these three galaxies.

  • We present near-infrared photometric properties of red supergiant stars (RSGs) in three galaxies NGC 4449, NGC 5055 and NGC 5457. The near-infrared imaging data of WFCAM UKIRT were used and combined with optical archive data to identify the RSGs in the galaxies. We found that the RSGs can be identified from the foreground Galactic stars in (i-K, ri) colour-colour diagram. The effective temperatures and luminosities of the identified RSGs are estimated from JHK photometry using MARCS model. In the H-R diagram, the majority of RSGs in the galaxies are distributed between $logL/L{\odot}=4.8$ and 5.7, and their effective temperature and luminosities agree with the current evolutionary tracks with masses in the range $9-30M{\odot}$. We also compared the spatial distribution of RSGs with the HII regions. A tight spatial correlation between RSGs and HII region was found in NGC 4449 and NGC 5457. We do not find a clear metallicity dependance on the RSG effective temperature in the three galaxies, but the maximum luminosity of the three galaxies is constant at $logL/L{\odot}{\sim}5.6$. Additional spectroscopy data, including photometry are essential to examine whether the physical properties of RSGs change with metallicity.

  • We present JHK photometry of star clusters in the dwarf irregular/dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569. Adopting several criteria to exclude other sources like foreground stars, background galaxies, etc., ~150 star cluster candidates are identified in the near-infrared images of NGC 1569, which include very young star clusters. From analysis based on theoretical background, we find ten very young star clusters near the center of this galaxy. The total reddening values toward these clusters are estimated from comparison with the theoretical estimates given by star cluster mode.

  • We calculate theoretical isochrones in a consistent way for five filters near the K-band, K, K', $K_s$, F205W, and F222M. Even when displayed in the same Vega magnitude system, the near-infrared colors of the same isochrone can differ by up to 0.18 mag at its bright end, depending on the filter. We analyze isochrones for several different extinction values, and find that a care is needed when comparing extinction values that are estimated by different filter sets, in particular when comparing those between atmospheric and space filter sets. To alleviate this problem, we present an 'effective extinction law' for each filter set and isochrone model, which describes extinction behaviour of isochrones in the observed color-magnitude diagram.

  • Using the AKARI mid-infrared all-sky survey catalogue, we are searching for debris disks which are important objects as an observational clue to on-going planetary system formation. Debris disk candidates are selected through a significant excess of the measured flux over the predicted flux for the stellar photospheric emission at $18{\mu}m$. The fluxes were originally estimated based on the near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of central stars constructed from the 2MASS J-, H-, and Ks-band fluxes. However, we found that in many cases the 2MASS photometry has large errors due to saturation in the central part of a star image. Therefore we performed follow-up observations with the IRSF 1.4m near-infrared telescope in South Africa to obtain accurate fluxes in the J-, H-, and Ks-bands. As a result, we have succeeded in improving the SEDs of the central stars. This improvement of the SEDs allows us to make more reliable selection of the candidates.

  • We present BVRI CCD photometry and near-infrared K photometry of the intermediate-aged open cluster NGC 7790. The reddening, E(B - V) = 0.54 $\pm$ 0.05 and the distance modulus, (m - M)o = 12.45 $\pm$ 0.10 for the cluster were determined by zero-age-main-sequence fitting and theoretical isochrone fitting using not only (V, B - V), (V, V - 1), (V, V - R) but also (V, V - K) color-magnitude diagrams. The reddening corresponded approximately to the average value derived from previous studies, while the distance modulus was found to be almost midway between the CCD photometric results of Romeo et al. (1989) and those of Mateo & Madore (1988). We have used four colors to distinguish members from field stars. The expected colors were calculated using the derived distance modulus, and were then were compared with the observed colors (B - V), (V - 1), (V - R), and (V - K). Thus, a color excess E(B - V) for each star was determined which could give the minimum difference between the calculated and observed colors. Single and binary members of the cluster were determined on the basis of the E(B - V) distribution of stars.

  • Many observations have found evidence of the presence of a large number of heavily obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). However, the nature of this population is only poorly understood because heavy obscuration by dust prevents one from finding them at optical wavelengths. Mid-infrared AGN searches can overcome this obstacle by penetrating through dust and by detecting direct emission from the dust torus. Thus, we can identify most of the AGN population, including type-2 and buried AGNs. Using the AKARI mid-infrared all-sky survey, we performed an AGN search in the nearby universe. Utilizing the 2MASS photometry, we selected mid-infrared-excess sources and carried out near-infrared spectroscopic observations in the AKARI Phase 3. During these follow-up observations, we have found three galaxies that show strong near-infrared red continuum from hot dust with a temperature of about 500 K, but do not show any AGN features in other wavelengths. The most suitable explanation of near-infrared continuum is the presence of central AGNs. Therefore, we conclude that they are AGNs obscured by dust. We performed X-ray observations of the two galaxies with SUZAKU. No detections in the 0.4-10 keV suggest that the column density may be much higher than $N_H=10^{23.5}cm^{-2}$. Comparing the masses of the host galaxies with those of the SDSS AGNs, we find that the host galaxies of the dusty AGNs discovered with AKARI are less massive populations than those of optically selected AGNs.

  • We present Subaru Near-Infrared (NIR) photometry for globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M60) belonging to the Virgo cluster. NIR data are obtained in Ks-band with the Subaru/MOIRCS, and matching HST/ACS optical data available in literature are used to explore the origin of GC color bimodality. A clear bimodal color distribution is observed in the optical color (g-z), in which the ratio between blue and red GCs is 4:6. By contrast, the more metallicity-sensitive optical-NIR colors (g-Ks, z-Ks) show a considerably weakened bimodality in their distributions. The color-color relation of the optical and NIR colors for the GC system shows a nonlinear feature, supporting that the optical color bimodality observed in NGC 4649 GC system is caused by nonlinear color-metallicity relations (CMRs).
