  • We report the spectroscopic properties of column-III nitrifies of GaN, GaInN, and AlGaN. The column-III nitride semiconductors are promising materials to realize the current-injection-type blue-and ultraviolet (UV)-light-emitting devices with high performance. To acheive the lasing with low threshold, the devices are must constructed to double heterostructure by succesive epitaxial growth technique, and we must confine the carriers in the potential barrier and optical confinement in wave guide between barrier and active layers has different refractive index. The refractive index of column-III nitride semiconductors, however, are rarely reported. The measured refractive index was 2.9, and the observed characteristic peak near the enrgy gap was analysed using a dielectric function and may due to excitonic contribution.

  • Anthracnose fungi associated with soybean (Glycine max), small red bean (Vigna angularis), and green bean (Phaseolus radiatus var. aurea) were compared with respect to cultural characteristics, morphological aspects, and pathogenicity. From the legumes, four different species of Colletotrichum were identified based on their morphological characters : C. truncatum, C. destructivum, C. trifolii and C. gloeosporioides. Colonies of Colletotrichum spp.on culture media varied in colour and growth habits depending upon the media and isolates. In general, formation of conidia, setae, and perithecia on water agar leaf medium was better than that on potato dextrose agar medium under near ultraviolet light. In cross inoculation tests, isolates of C. truncatum, c. destructivum, C. trifolii and C. gloeosporioides could infect soybean, small red bean, and green bean at different growth stages. There were some differences in pathogenicity or susceptibility depending on crops tested. C. truncatum was the most virulent and major pathogenic species among the four species.

  • A photodetector based on a reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/n-Si heterojunction with high responsivity, detectivity and fast response speed is presented. Here, we put forward a simple vacuum filtration method to prepare RGO film and transfer it onto an n-Si substrate to form an RGO/n-Si heterojunction. The experimental results show that the heterojunction has good rectification characteristics, and the response and recovery time are less than 0.31 s and 0.25 s, respectively. Under 470 nm light conditions at -2 V applied voltage, the responsivity and detectivity of the device are 65 mA/W and 4.02 × 1010 cmHz1/2W-1, respectively. The simple preparation process and good performance of the RGO/n-Si heterojunction make it a promising material for photoelectric detection, especially in the near-ultraviolet band.

  • We reported a new method to enhance the photoluminescence (PL) properties of $Eu^{3+}$ ions doped $Gd_2Mo_4O_{15}$ phosphors via cation substitution. With the aid of conventional sol-gel method, a series of $Eu^{3+}$ ions doped $Gd_{2(1-x)}Y_{2x}Mo_4O_{15}$ phosphors were prepared. The prepared samples emitted red light when excited at 393 nm. Moreover, when part of the $Gd^{3+}$ ions was substituted by the $Y^{3+}$ ions, the PL emission intensity of the studied samples was enhanced and the optimal doping concentration for $Y^{3+}$ ions was 30 mol%. The calculated CIE coordinate (0.663,0.337) was situated in the red region. Furthermore, the thermal quenching behaviors of the synthesized $Eu^{3+}$ ions doped $Gd_{2(1-x)}Y_{2x}Mo_4O_{15}$ phosphors were studied. At last, we also packaged a red-emitting light-emitting diode device by integrating the obtained phosphors and a near-ultraviolet chip to verify the applications of the $Eu^{3+}$ ions doped $Gd_{2(1-x)}Y_{2x}Mo_4O_{15}$ phosphors for indoor lighting.

  • Nanocrystalline $Ca_2Gd_8Si_6O_{26}$ (CGS) : $Sm^{3+}$ and CGS : $Tb^{3+}/Sm^{3+}$ phosphors were prepared by solvothermal reaction method for light emitting diode (LED) and field emission display (FED) applications. The XRD patterns of these phosphors confirmed their oxyapatite structure in the hexagonal lattice. The visible luminescence properties of these phosphors were investigated by exciting with ultraviolet (UV) or near-UV light and low voltage electron beam. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of $Ca_2Gd_8Si_6O_{26}$ (CGS) : $Sm^{3+}$ and CGS : $Tb^{3+}/Sm^{3+}$ phosphors were investigated as a function of $Sm^{3+}$ concentration. Cathodoluminescence (CL) properties were examined by changing the acceleration voltage. The CGS : $Sm^{3+}$ showed the dominant orange emission due to the $^4G_{5/2}{\rightarrow}^6H_{7/2}$ transition. The CGS : $Tb^{3+}/Sm^{3+}$ phosphor showed the green, white and orange emissions when excited with 275, 378, and 405 nm wavelengths, respectively. The chromaticity coordinates of these phosphors were comparable to or better than those of standard phosphors for LED or FED devices.

  • To investigate the image-forming property of optical system having Gaussian amplitude for polychromatic source, we calculated the chromaticity variation and the illuminance distribution. Considered polychromatic sources in this paper are A light which is on incandescent-tungsten lamp, C light which is a daylight, and $D_{65}$ light which is a extend daylight to the near ultraviolet. The polychromatic sources represent the different chromaticity values at a geometrical image point. The chromaticity variation of optical system having a Gaussian amplitude is smaller than that having an uniform amplitude. The illuminance distributions for polychromatic sources present nearly the same values, and the depth of focus for optical system having a Gaussian amplitude is wider than that having an uniform amplitude. From these results, we know that the depth of focus increases and the chromaticity variation decreases, when the incident light amplitude is modulated from an uniform amplitude to a Gaussian amplitude.

  • The light absorbance of photocatalysts and reaction kinetics of environmental pollutants at the liquid-solid and gas-solid interfaces differ from each other. Nevertheless, many previous photocatalytic studies have applied the science to aqueopus applications without due consideration of the environment. As such, this work reports the surface and morphological characteristics and photocatalytic activities of carbon-embedded (C-$TiO_2$) photocatalysts for control of gas-phase methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) under a range of different operational conditions. The C-$TiO_2$ photocatalysts were prepared by oxidizing titanium carbide powders at $350^{\circ}C$. The characteristics of the C-$TiO_2$ photocatalysts, along with pure TiC and the reference pure $TiO_2$, were then determined by X-ray diffraction, scanning emission microscope, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-VIS-NIR), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The C-$TiO_2$ powders showed a clear shift in the absorbance spectrum towards the visible region, which indicated that the C-$TiO_2$ photocatalyst could be activated effectively by visible-light irradiation. The MTBE decomposition efficiency depended on operational parameters, including the air flow rate (AFR), input concentration (IC), and relative humidity (RH). As the AFRs decreased from 1.5 to 0.1 L/min, the average efficiencies for MTBE increased from 11% to 77%. The average decomposition efficiencies for the ICs of 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 ppm were 77%, 77%, 54%, and 38%, respectively. In addition, the decomposition efficiencies for RHs of 20%, 45%, 70%, and 95% were 92%, 76%, 50%, and 32%, respectively. These findings indicate that the prepared photocatalysts could be effectively applied to control airborne MTBE if their operational conditions were optimized.

  • Jawarishe Jalinoos (JJ) is an orally used formulation available in semisolid dosage form, prepared with powdered plant materials mixed in honey or sugar syrup. It has many admirable pharmacological effects and used in Unani medicine to treat various acute and chronic disorders since ancient times. The ICH Harmonised Tripartite Guideline stated that photostability testing should be an essential part of stability testing to confirm that light exposure does not result in an unacceptable change in drugs substance and finished products. To date, the effect of light on JJ is not studied, in this study photostability evaluation of JJ was carried out. The test sample was manufactured with genuine ingredients in the in-door pharmacy of the National Institute of Unani Medicine. JJ was packed in two transparent polyethylene terephthalate airtight containers. The first sample was analysed at zero-day and the second sample was placed in a stability chamber subjected to light challenge with an overall illumination of 1.2 million lux hours combined with near ultraviolet energy of 200-watt hours per square meter by using option 2, along with 30±2℃ temperature and relative humidity 70±5%. Analysis of both finished products showed no considerable changes in organoleptic characters. Less than 5% variation was observed in physicochemical parameters. HPTLC fingerprinting showed justifiable variation. Microbial load and specific counts were within the limit prescribed by WHO. As no unacceptable changes were noted in JJ subjecting to light challenge, it is concluded that JJ is a photostable Unani compound formulation.

  • To broaden the understanding of classical Cepheid structure, evolution and atmospheres, we have extended our continuing secret lives of Cepheids program by obtaining XMM/Chandra X-ray observations, and Hubble space telescope (HST) / cosmic origins spectrograph (COS) FUV-UV spectra of the bright, nearby Cepheids Polaris, ${\delta}$ Cep and ${\beta}$ Dor. Previous studies made with the international ultraviolet explorer (IUE) showed a limited number of UV emission lines in Cepheids. The well-known problem presented by scattered light contamination in IUE spectra for bright stars, along with the excellent sensitivity & resolution combination offered by HST/COS, motivated this study, and the spectra obtained were much more rich and complex than we had ever anticipated. Numerous emission lines, indicating $10^4$ K up to ${\sim}3{\times}10^5$ K plasmas, have been observed, showing Cepheids to have complex, dynamic outer atmospheres that also vary with the photospheric pulsation period. The FUV line emissions peak in the phase range ${\varphi}{\approx}0.8-1.0$ and vary by factors as large as $10{\times}$. A more complete picture of Cepheid outer atmospheres is accomplished when the HST/COS results are combined with X-ray observations that we have obtained of the same stars with XMM-Newton & Chandra. The Cepheids detected to date have X-ray luminosities of log $L_X{\approx}28.5-29.1$ ergs/sec, and plasma temperatures in the $2-8{\times}106$ K range. Given the phase-timing of the enhanced emissions, the most plausible explanation is the formation of a pulsation-induced shocks that excite (and heat) the atmospheric plasmas surrounding the photosphere. A pulsation-driven ${\alpha}^2$ equivalent dynamo mechanism is also a viable and interesting alternative. However, the tight phase-space of enhanced emission (peaking near 0.8-1.0 ${\varphi}$) favor the shock heating mechanism hypothesis.

  • $Ce^{4+}$, $Eu^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$ co-doped $Ca_3Si_3O_8F_2$ phosphor was synthesized via solid state reaction method using $CaF_2$, $CaCO_3$ and $SiO_2$ as raw materials for the host and $Eu_2O_3$, $CeO_2$, and $Tb_4O_7$ as activators. The luminescent properties of the phosphor was analysed by spectrofluorophotometer at room temperature. The effect of excitation wavelengths on the luminescent properties of the phosphor i.e. under near-ultraviolet (nUV) and visible excitations was investigated. The emission peaks of $Ce^{4+}$, $Eu^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$ co-doped $Ca_3Si_3O_8F_2$ phosphor lays at 480(blue band), 550(green band) and 611nm (red band) under 380nm excitation wavelength, attributed to the $Ce^{4+}$ ion, $Tb^{3+}$ ion and $Eu^{3+}$ ions respectively. The results reveal that the phosphor emits white light upon nUV (380nm) / visible (465nm) illumination, and a red light upon 395nm / 535nm illumination. RE ions doped $Ca_3Si_3O_8F_2$ is a promising white light phosphor for LEDs. The emission colours can be seen using Commission international de l'eclairage (CIE) co-ordinates. A single host phosphor emitting different colours under different excitations indicates that it is a potential phosphor having applications in many fields.
