  • Near field ground motions contain distinct and large amplitude pulses in both velocity and displacement. This paper investigates characteristics of near field earthquakes and their effects on seismic demands. 20 EQGMs were selected for this purpose that satisfied 5 conditions for Near field motion. Among them ten EQGMs have one distinct peak velocity pulse in the velocity time history. In this study the responsed are Linear Elastic Response Spectrum(LERS), Response Modification Factor(R) and Inelastic Response Spectrum(IRS). The effect of the selection of Near field EQGMs on these response parameters are investigated.

  • This paper presents a study on the behavior of an RC bridge under near-field and far-field ground motions. For this purpose, a dynamic nonlinear finite element time history analysis has been conducted. The near-field and far-field records are chosen pairwise from the same events which are fits to the seismic design of the bridge. In order to perform an accurate seismic evaluation, the model has been analyzed under two vertical and horizontal components of ground motions. Parameters of relative displacement, residual displacement, and maximum plastic strain have been considered and compared in terms of near-field and far-field ground motions. In the following, in order to decrease the undesirable effects of near-field ground motions, a viscous damper is suggested and its effects have been studied. In this case, the results show that the near-field ground motions increase maximum relative and residual displacement respectively up to three and twice times. Significant seismic improvements were achieved by using viscous dampers on the bridge model. Somehow under the considered near-field ground motion, parameters of residual and relative displacement decrease dramatically even less than the model without damper under the far-field record of the same ground motion.

  • We propose a new expression of the near-field gain correction to calculate the on-axis far-field gain from the onaxis near-field gain for a directive antenna. The new expression is represented by transversal vectorial transmitting characteristics of two antennas that are measured by planar near-field equipment. Due to the advantages of the photonic sensor, the utilization of the new expression realizes the measurements of the on-axis far-field gains for two kinds of double ridged waveguide horn antennas within 0.1 dB deviation from 1 GHz to 6 GHz without calibrating the photonic sensor system.

  • We present experimental results on the multiplexed and stack-wise recording of near-field holograms. Experiments on angular multiplexing show that the angular selectivity of near-field hologram is better than that of the conventional hologram. Experiments on stack-wise recording prove that near-fields originated from sub-diffraction-limit-size objects could be stored in a photorefractive crystal at 2mm apart from the crystal surface. In addition, to improve the data access and transfer time, a silicon nano-aperture array was introduced and applied to the recording of near-field holograms.

  • We have tried to enhance the density of the near-field optical memory and to improve the recording/readout speed. The current optical memory has the limitation in both density and speed. This barrier due to the far-field nature can be overcome by the use of the near-field$^{(1)}$ . The optical data storage density can be increased by reducing the size of the nanometric aperture where the near-field is obtained. To fabricate the aperture in precise dimension, we applied the orientation-dependent / anisotropic etching property of crystal Si often employed in the field of MEMS$^{(2)}$ . And so we fabricated the 10$\times$10 aperture array. This array will be also the indispensable part for speeding up. One will see the possibility of the multi-tracking pickup in the phase changing type memory through this array$^{(3)}$ . This aperture array will be expected to write the bit-mark whose size is about 100nm. We will show the recent result obtained. (omitted)

  • In this paper, an equivalent circuit model for near-field noise emission is proposed to implement a multimedia operation-monitoring system for mobile devices. The proposed model includes a magnetic field probe that captures noise emissions from multimedia components, and a transfer function for near-field noise coupling from a transmission line source to a magnetic field probe. The proposed model was empirically verified with transfer function measurements of near-field noise emissions from 10 kHz to 500 MHz. With the proposed model, a magnetic field probe was optimally designed for noise measurement on a camera module and an audio codec in a mobile device. It was demonstrated that the probe successfully captured the near-field noise emissions, depending on the operating conditions of the multimedia components, with enhanced sensitivity from a conventional reference probe.

  • Near-field ground motions exhibit special characteristics that are different from ordinary far-field ground motions. This paper first briefly examines the characteristics of near-field ground motions associated with fault directivity and fling-step effects. Then evaluation of near-field ground motions by inelatstic response spectrum analysis is performed and analyzed. As a result, ductility demand in near-field ground motions is larger in hanging wall than in foot wall in long period regions. Also in long period regions ductility demand in soil site is larger than that in rock site.

  • Hydrodynamic mixing characteristics of submerged effluent discharges into Masan Bay were investigated by both field observations and numerical model simulations. CORMIX model, a length-scale mixing model, was adopted to obtain the near-field dilution and wastefield characteristics of the effluent discharges into Masan Bay. Model predictions of the near-field dilution rates were in a good agreement with field observations in summer and winter seasons. Seasonal variations in the dilution rates showed that the highest dilution rate was obtained in winter while the lowest dilution rate was in summer. As the effluent discharges are increased with the treatment capacity expansion to be completed by 2011, the dilution rates are expected to be much reduced and the near-field stability of the wastefields will become unstable due to the increased effluent discharges.

  • Near-field properties of light emanated from a subwavelength double slit of finite length in a thin metal film, which is essential for understanding fundamental physical mechanisms for near-field optical beam manipulations and various potential nanophotonic device applications, is investigated by using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. Near-field intensity distribution along the propagation direction of light after passing through the slit has been obtained from the phase relation of transverse electric and magnetic fields and the wave impedance. It is found that the near field of emerged light from the both slits is evanescent, that is consistent with conventional surface plasmon localization near the metal surface. Due to the finite of the slit, the amplitude of this evanescent field does not monotonically approach to than of the infinite slit as the slit length increases, i.e. the near-field of the longer slit along the center line can be weaker than that of the shorter one.

  • The specific characteristics of near-field earthquake records can lead to different dynamic responses of bridges compared to far-field records. However, the effect of near-field strong ground motion has often been neglected in the seismic performance assessment of the bridges. Furthermore, damage to horizontally curved multi-frame RC box-girder bridges in the past earthquakes has intensified the potential of seismic vulnerability of these structures due to their distinctive dynamic behavior. Based on the nonlinear time history analyses in OpenSEES, this article, assesses the effects of near-field versus far-field earthquakes on the seismic performance of horizontally curved multi-frame RC box-girder bridges by accounting the vertical component of the earthquake records. Analytical seismic fragility curves have been derived thru considering uncertainties in the earthquake records, material and geometric properties of bridges. The findings indicate that near-field effects reasonably increase the seismic vulnerability in this bridge sub-class. The results pave the way for future regional risk assessments regarding the importance of either including or excluding near-field effects on the seismic performance of horizontally curved bridges.
