  • Objective: The aim of this study is developing the navigation radar display of navy ship with ecological interface design (EID) framework. Background: Navy ship radar operator must perform navigation support tasks by monitoring the complex and diverse information presented on the radar display. Current radar display is limited in effective navigation aid and response to an unusual state immediately. It is necessary to develop an effective radar display. Method: Ten navy radar operators performed a series of trials in a low-fidelity radar simulation in which they attempted to solve the problems of current navigation situation. Results: The result demonstrated that the ecological interface's performance was better than the existing radar display on performance time and subjective mental workload. Conclusion: This study expand EID study field to navy ship radar display and confirm ecological display is better than existing radar display in performance time, subjective mental work load. Application: The result of this study may help to improve navy ship navigation radar display currently in use.

  • One of trend of portable devices is convergence with other devices, especially with navigation system. This converged system is generally called PND (Personal Navigation Device). This detachable device is developed for personal entertainment in everyday life and navigation system when deriving, so it should meet the specification of vehicle thermal environment, anti-vibration as well as the anti-shock by sudden drop. In this paper, the way to design the hard disk drive damper with CAE, is introduced to get a reliable system from the beginning of the design step.

  • This study aimed to understand the sex differences in cognitive behaviors in website design and demonstrate a practical basis for utilizing these differences into more user-centered design concept. Especially, we focused on the sex-different preference according to the information architecture of website navigation. First, We investigated general differences between men and women in cognitive behaviors through various literature studies. According to our investigation, men's cognitive works generally tend to follow a regular sequence and proceed step by step. On the other hand, women's cognitive style is generally characterized by random generation and simultaneous progress. To examine that these differences can be found in use of website navigation, we made an experiment in website design. We designed several test websites that have same contents but different style of navigation structure. A similar number of men and women were chosen for this test and they implemented given tasks. During the test, participants reported their preference on each websites and their implementing time and number of errors were collected. Based on the analysis of test data, it was possible to conclude that male participants' preference for the navigation with a narrow and deep information structure is relatively higher than female participants' preference for the same navigation, On the other hand, female participants have a preference of the navigation with a broad and swallow information structure. The result of study showed that there is a close correlation between the sex differences in preference of navigation types and the general sex differences in cognitive behavior. This finding can be used as a basis for designing the website navigation in which sex differences are reflected.

  • Nowadays, as IT industry is being developed, many studies are in progress in the areas of user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) and interest in the icons related to these areas are rising accordingly. IT developments have also influenced the vessel sector promoting the development of navigation equipment and systems utilizing IT. However, due to complicated functions of navigation equipment and systems, concerns have been noted about the increased cognitive burden on officers, along with the need for researches on reducing such burden. This study, therefore, was conducted focusing on the design of icons that will reduce cognitive burden on officers when using a typical navigation equipment such as ECDIS(Electric Chart Display and Information System). Based on a survey conducted with experts who have rich experiences in navigation and are currently teaching ECDIS in universities, the present study identified the functions of ECDIS, for which icons should be designed. Accordingly, suitable icons for ECDIS were designed and their effects were evaluated. It is expected that the results of this study will be used as basic data for the design of icons for other navigation equipment in the future.

  • Navigation system is regarded as the interface border line between the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and the driver as the prospective information provider of the ATIS (Advanced Traveler Information System). Following theory, if the navigation system appropriately designed and utilized, that can maximize the transport efficiency, contribute to improvements of the environments and road safety. To accomplish these dinds of objectives of the navigation system use, human factors plays an important roles specially focused on the driver's safety, performance and system usability. Because the effectiveness of the system depends on the acceptance of the system, and the extent to which the system conforms to driver physical and cognitive limitations and capabilities. Therefore, the ergonomic design vaniables must be seriously selected and reflected in early design step for more effective and appreciate product design. As the first step of this aim, this study selected and categorized the human factors design variables of the navigation system.

  • Even though GNSS provides highly accurate navigation information all over the world, it is vulnerable to jamming in the electronic warfare due to its weak signal power. The United States and Korea have plans to use terrestrial navigation systems as back-up systems during outage of GNSS. In order to develop back-up systems of GNSS, an M&S software platform is necessary for performance evaluation of various vehicle trajectories and integrated navigation systems. In this paper a design method of an M&S software is proposed for evaluation of multiple radio positioning integration systems. The proposed M&S software consists of a navigation environment generation part, a navigation algorithm part, a GUI part and a coverage analysis part. Effectiveness of the proposed design method is shown by implementing an M&S software for the GPS, DME and eLoran navigation systems.
