  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to give account of effects of the Korean herbal medicine therapy which is based on the Sasang constitutional medicine for the patient who has suffered from scale of back caused by psoriasis. Method : Psoriasis patient was diagnosed Soeumin based on his nature and emotion, physical characteristics, symptoms. He was medicated Soeumin Goepungsan. Results and Conclusions : Psoriasis patient who was treated with Soeumin Goepoong-san showed improvement in Psoriasis symptom and general condition. This case study describes the effectiveness on psoriasis symptom by using Soeumin Goepoong-san.

  • Prognosis is an anticipation of the probable response to periodontal therapy and a long-term prospect for maintaining a functional dentition. Hopeless cases or cases of simple gingivitis without systemic diseases generally have little problem to establish definite prognoses. However, it might become somewhat challenging to determine their prognoses in borderline cases. A risk factor for periodontal disease may be environmental, behavioral, or biologic factors that can be defined as an occurrence has been associated with destructive periodontitis. Some risk factors are modifiable, while others cannot be modified. Modifiable risk factors are environmental or behavioral in nature in contrast non-modifiable risk factors are usually intrinsic to the individual and therefore not easily changed. In this review, we will assess the various modifiable or non-modifiable risk factors for susceptibility 10 periodontal diseases.

  • The heterogeneous nature of lung cancer has become increasingly apparent since introduction of molecular classification. In general, advanced lung cancer is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. Activating alterations in several potential driver oncogenic genes have been identified, including EGFR, ROS1 and ALK and understanding of their molecular mechanisms underlying development, progression, and survival of lung cancer has led to the design of personalized treatments that have produced superior clinical outcomes in tumours harbouring these mutations. In light of the tsunami of new biomarkers and targeted agents, next generation sequencing testing strategies will be more appropriate in identifying the patients for each therapy and enabling personalized patients care. The challenge now is how best to interpret the results of these genomic tests, in the context of other clinical data, to optimize treatment choices. In genomic era of cancer treatment, the traditional one-size-fits-all paradigm is being replaced with more effective, personalized oncologic care. This review provides an overview of lung cancer genomics and personalized treatment.

Osteopathy 의 한의학적 임상활용 방안에 관한 소고 (The Study on Clinical Application of Osteopathy to Oriental Medicine)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to get knowledge about osteopathy and to applicate the osteopathy to oriental medicine. Methods: We investigated several books and literatures on osteopathy related sites explored by internet to know the general theories and present conditions of osteopathy in Korea and other countries. Results & Conclusion : 1. The principles of osteopathy are as follows. First, the human being is a dynamic unit of function. Second, the body possesses self regulating mechanisms which are self healing in nature. Third, structure and function are reciprocally interrelated. Fourth, the body rational therapy is based upon knowledge and use of the above three principles. 2. Doctors of osteopathy evaluate the musculoskeletal system to identify structural problems and to support the body's natural tendency toward health and self healing. 3. We can applicate the osteopathy to oriental clinical medicine based on interpreting the principles of osteopathy.

유전자 발현 영상기법 (Imaging Gene Expression)

  • The rapid progress of molecular genetic methods over the past two decades has necessitated the development of methods to detect and quantify genetic activity within living bodies. Reporter genes provide a rapid and convenient tool to monitor gene expression by yielding a readily measurable phenotype upon expression when introduced into a biological system. Conventional reporter systems, however, are limited in their usefulness for in vivo experiments or human gene therapy because of its invasive nature which requires cell damage before assays can be performed. This offers an unique opportunity for nuclear imaging techniques to develope a novel method for imaging both the location and amount of gene expression noninvasively. Current developments to achieve this goal rely on utilizing either reporter enzymes that accumulate radiolabeled substrates or reporter receptors that bind specific radioligands. This overview includes a brief introduction to the background for such research, a summary of published results, and an outlook for future directions.

  • Chronic abdominal pain, defined as long-lasting intermittent or constant abdominal pain, is a common pediatric problem encountered by primary care physicians and medical subspecialists. Chronic abdominal pain in children is usually functional, i.e., without objective evidence of an underlying organic disorder. Functional abdominal pain is categorized as functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, functional abdominal pain, abdominal migraine, and aerophagia according to the Rome II criteria for pediatric functional gastrointestinal disorders. There is insufficient evidence to state that the nature of abdominal pain or the presence of associated symptoms can discriminate between functional and organic disorders. The presence of alarming symptoms or signs, such as weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, persistent fever, and chronic severe diarrhea, is associated with a higher prevalence of organic disease. Most children with chronic abdominal pain are unlikely to require diagnostic testing; such children often need pharmacologic and behavioral therapy.

In Vitro Selection of Cancer-Specific RNA Aptamers

  • In this study, nuclease-resistant RNA aptamers that are specific for Jurkat T leukemia cells were selected by a subtractive systemic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) method. A randomized nuclease-resistant RNA library was incubated with normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in each round to preclude RNAs that recognize the common cellular components on the surface of normal and cancer cells. The precluded RNAs were used for the selection of Jurkat T cell-specific aptamers, and the specific RNAs were then gradually enriched from start to the following selections. After 16 rounds of the subtractive SELEX, the selected aptamers were found to preferentially bind to Jurkat T cells, but not to the normal PBMC, evidenced by fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis. Thus, the subtractive SELEX can be used to identify ligands to cancer-specific biological markers without prior knowledge of the nature of markers. The aptamers could be applied to specific cell sorting, tumor therapy, and diagnosis, and moreover, to find cancer cell-specific markers.

Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles by Phytopathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae Strain BXO8

  • Extracellular biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles with various shapes using the rice bacterial blight bacterium Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae BXO8 is reported. The synthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Based on the evidence of HR-TEM, the synthesized particles were found to be spherical, with anisotropic structures such as triangles and rods, with an average size of 14.86 nm. The crystalline nature of silver nanoparticles was evident from the bright circular spots in the SAED pattern, clear lattice fringes in the high-resolution TEM images, and peaks in the XRD pattern. The FTIR spectrum showed that biomolecules containing amide and carboxylate groups are involved in the reduction and stabilization of the silver nanoparticles. Using such a biological method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles is a simple, viable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly process, which can be used in antimicrobial therapy.

Arrested pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus mimicking intraosseous lesions of the skull base

  • Arrested pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus is a developmental variant that is not always well recognized and is often confused with other pathologies associated with the skull base. This report describes the case of a patient referred for cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging for dental implant therapy. CBCT demonstrated a well-defined incidental lesion in the left sphenoid sinus with soft tissue-like density and sclerotic borders with internal curvilinear opacifications. The differential diagnoses included intraosseous lipoma, arrested pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus, chondrosarcoma, chondroid chordoma, and ossifying fibroma. The radiographic diagnosis of arrested pneumatization was based on the location of the lesion, its well-defined nature, the presence of internal opacifications, and lack of expansion. Gray-scale CBCT imaging of the area demonstrated values similar to fatty tissue. This case highlighted the fact that benign developmental variants associated with the skull base share similar radiographic features with more serious pathological entities.

Tumour Suppressor Mechanisms in the Control of Chromosome Stability: Insights from BRCA2

  • Cancer is unique amongst human diseases in that its cellular manifestations arise and evolve through the acquisition of somatic alterations in the genome. In particular, instability in the number and structure of chromosomes is a near-universal feature of the genomic alterations associated with epithelial cancers, and is triggered by the inactivation of tumour suppressor mechanisms that preserve chromosome integrity in normal cells. The nature of these mechanisms, and how their inactivation promotes carcinogenesis, remains enigmatic. I will review recent work from our laboratory on the tumour suppressor BRCA2 that addresses these issues, focusing on new insights into cancer pathogenesis and therapy that are emerging from improved understanding of the molecular basis of chromosomal instability in BRCA2-deficient cancer cells.
