  • For the examination of the role of monocerin(1) on the biological activity, (8S, 9S, 11R)-(-)-monocerin(20) and (9S, 11R)-(+)-fusarentin 4, 5-dimethyl ether(19) were synthesized by a condensation of the benzylic anion of ethyl 2, 3, 4-trimethoxy-6-methylbenzoate(16) with modifyed (R)-ethyl 3-hydroxyhexanoate (9). In a key step, bioreduction with active dried baker's yeast in organic solvent system was employed to get a chiral aldehyde 12. Their phytotoxic activities were tested on rice seedlings and lettuce seeds.

  • Due to the syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, the subway passenger cabin should be continuously sterilized. However, a disinfectant such as chlorine is toxic and can lead to different issues to human health. In this paper, we introduced a novel disinfectant based on natural product (Dendropanax morbifera extract). Via ultra-high performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometer (UHPLC-MS), different compounds from Dendropanax morbifera extract showed antivirus potentials. Antimicrobial experiments confirmed that the air-disinfectant containing Dendropanax morbifera can eliminate harmful microorganisms including Gram (-), Gram (+), and yeast within 5 mins. The as-prepared air-disinfectant also showed high antivirus activity against H1N1, HRV, and EV71. Deodorization test also indicates that the as-prepared air-disinfectant can lower the harmful gas such as ammonia and trimethylamine in the atmosphere. To evaluate the potential of air-disinfectant containing Dendropanax morbifera in practical applications, different safety tests including acute oral toxicity, acute skin irritation, and eye irritation were conducted. Results showed that the as-prepared disinfectant did not negatively affect tested animals during these safety investigations.

  • Submicron-sized polymeric particles (SSPP) were used to remove nucleic acids and endotoxins from cell lysates. The positively charged SSPP selectively adsorb nucleic acids and endotoxins and form complexes with them. The complexes can be easily removed by sedimentation or centrifugation. The removal of nucleic acids and endotoxins using SSPP also can be accomplished in the presence of cell and cell debris. Therefore, nucleic acids and endotoxins can be removed in an initial step of the down-stream processes. In bakers yeast and E. coli lysate systems, the level of DNA could be reduced more than three orders of magnitudes and endotoxins more than seven orders of magnitudes concurrently willi the cell debris removal process using SSPP.

  • Studies on extraction of red pigment was performed to provide the basic information for the utilization of red pigment as s new source of natural food colorant. A bacterium isolated from marine resources were carried out the test for excretion of red pigment. One strain of a marine bacterium, KSR-97 showed a high production of red pigment on the medium of colloidal chitin, peptone-yeast extract with minerals. In physicochemical and sensory properties in aqueous solution of red pigment was investigated at various condition of pH, temperature, concentration of ethanol and stability of storage. Potent antioxidative of red pigment was separated by thin layer chromatograpy, silica gel chromatography and reverse high performance liquid chromatography using ODS hypersil column.

  • The availability of Phaffia rhodozyma as an astaxanthin sources in the aquaculture industry is limited because of the low carotenoid content of natural isolate. In this study, we have used the protoplast fusion technique to construct cell hybrids with an increased content of astaxanthin from P. rhodozyma. Cell hybrids (F307 and F406) obtained were very stable and produced considerably more astaxanthin (> 1 mg/g yeast) than the wild parent. Karyogamy was confirmed by the isolation of recombinants after mitotic segregation of parental auxotrophic genetic markers, the increased amount of chromosomal DNA/cell and the presence of single nucleus/cell.

  • A ${\beta}$-glucosidase producing yeast strain was isolated from Korean traditional rice wine. Based on the sequence of the YCL008c gene and analysis of the fatty acid composition, the isolate was identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain HJ-014. S. cerevisiae HJ-014 produced ginsenoside Rd, $F_2$, and compound K from the ethanol extract of red ginseng. The production was increased by shaking culture, where the bioconversion efficiency was increased 2-fold compared to standing culture. The production of ginsenoside $F_2$ and compound K was time-dependent and thought to proceed by the transformation pathway of: red ginseng extract ${\rightarrow}Rd{\rightarrow}F_2{\rightarrow}$ compound K. The optimum incubation time and concentration of red ginseng extract for the production of compound K was 96 hr and 4.5% (w/v), respectively.

  • Rhodosporidium toruloides, an oleaginous yeast, can be used as a fast and reliable evaluation tool to screen new natural lipid-lowering agents. Herein, we showed that triglyceride (TG) accumulation was inhibited by 42.6% in 0.1% red radish coral sprout extract (RRSE)-treated R. toruloides. We also evaluated the anti-obesity effect of the RRSE in a mouse model. The body weight gain of mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) with 0.1% RRSE (HFD-RRSE) was significantly decreased by 60% compared with that mice fed the HFD alone after the 8-week experimental period. Body fat of the HFD-RRSE-fed group was dramatically reduced by 38.3% compared with that of the HFD-fed group.

  • There is a concern that chemicals in our environment are affecting human health by disrupting a normal endocrine function. Much of the concern has focused on chemicals that can interact directly with steroid hormone receptors. The ability of certain man-made chemicals to mimic the effects of natural steroid hormones and their potential to disrupt the delicate balance of the endocrine system in animals are of increasing concern. • The study was conducted to research the desirable method for fermentation of acidic apple beverage in the farmhouse. Step by step fermentation(SSF), complex fermentation after crushing of the fruit(CCF), complex fermentation after slicing of the fruit(SCF) and natural fermentation added yeast only after slicing of the fruit(SYNF) were compared. The brief fermentor for using stationary complex fermentation in the farmhouse was made in this experiment. The ability of acid production, flavor, taste and color were measured by sensory evaluation and mechanical methods. The quality of vinegar by SYNF and SCF were estimated by color, flavor, content, composition of sugar, and organic acids, and which was a suitable fermentation method for the farmhouse. The strains of acetobacter, SYNF-1 and 2 were isolated from the SYNF vinegar, and if has been shown that the SYNF-1 was a main strain in this study.
