Semiotic Analysis of Expressive Features and Structural Meanings in Traditional Furniture of Korea, China and Japan - Focus on the Storage Furniture from 17th to 19th century - (한중일 전통가구에 나타난 표현과 의미의 기호학적 분석 - 17~19세기 수납가구를 중심으로 -)

  • The study aimed to find the fundamental differences of aesthetics in Korea, China, and Japan by analyzing expressive features and structural meanings of the storage furniture from $17^{th}$ to $19^{th}$ century. The study was performed in four steps; analysis of expressive features, isotopic analysis, semantic structure analysis, and comprehensive interpretation. The results showed that three countries had linear shapes with curvilinear elements, closed forms with open spaces, natural material hues with change of tone or color, and symmetrical forms with asymmetrical patterns and structures in common. Korea comparatively accented on the natural material colors and wood grains. China stressed on the big and wide faces using three-dimensional carving. Japan accented on the linear elements with strong color contrast and decorative metal fixtures. These features were caused by the traditional thoughts and according aesthetic principles. Korea and China were affected by the Confucianism focused on establishing the order of rank. Meanwhile, Japan was more influenced by the Buddhism emphasized on the individuality and communication. Therefore, the differences of the expressive features in furniture among the three countries were inevitable consequences of the different ideologies.

  • The modern society which is going through the big turbulence of civilization experiences the lost of humanity and the phenomenon that the standard of our thoughts, like those for good and evil, truth and false is not clear anymore as the technology is being improved. This makes us miss the past when everything is simple and the standards are very clear and being attracted by the metaphorical culture symbolizing something from the past, like memories of youth, fantasies, fairy tales or myths and we are now having a great interest in the joy of life and the affluent life. Influenced by this kind of tendency in modern society, the minimalism, which had the great influence in the nineties, went out of fashion and at last the romantic susceptibility seems to be the trend forming the major mood of the late 20th century - the early 21st century. This study focus is: (1) the theoretical aspects of romantic images such as the concept, the historical tendency and the character are considered. (2) the variety and multiplicity of the romantic images is discussed after the romantic image is classified into four types of retro character, natural character, ethnic character, erotic character according to major trends in our modern. The purpose of this study is to understand the romantic images in modern fashion, by analyzing the fashion trends together with the various features of romantic images.

A Comparative Study on the Architectural Characteristics of Gunjajeong and Gyejeong (군자정(君子亭)과 계정(溪亭)의 건축특성 비교 연구)

  • With regard to the pavilion buildings of Imcheonggak Gunjajeong and Donglakdang Gyejeong that are located within residential areas, this study focused on the construction background, the building owner's circumstances and the location environment of these buildings, and attempted to derive the architectural characteristics presented by these two pavilion buildings and, through this, to grasp the architect's intention of plan. The results of this study are as follows. With regard to Gunjajeong, it could be confirmed that, first, it is located in a propitious site and took the composition that follows the family ritual standards for the family rituals of the scholar-gentry class and opens to visitor access, and second, the floor height of the site and interior space was designed so that Munpilbong on the south and the Sarangchae on the west, and the Sadang on the east can be connected visually, and third, the authority and dignity of the head family were built through the symmetric 丁-shaped plane figure, the wide partition module, the form-centered building, and the hierarchical composition of the roof. On the other hand, with regard to Gyejeong, it could be confirmed that, first, it is located along the stream of Jagye valley that has no mountains in the front and in the back and took the composition that put the name symbolizing Taoist thoughts on the surrounding natural environment and was closed to visitor access but opens to nature, and second, with Jagye and Jagye surroundings as the main landscape, it built the concept of intended landscape that symbolizes the Taoist thoughts by giving names not only simply to the visible objects but also to surrounding rocks, and third, the asymmetric ㄱ-shaped plane composed a yard-centered space rather than emphasizing the shape, and connected the part of the plane with Jagye so as to be embodied as a personal inner self-perfecting place that closely communicates only with nature away from the mundane world.

Aesthetic Value of the Neoclassic Style in Eighteenth to Nineteenth Century Fashion ($18\~19$세기 복식에 나타난 신고전주의 양식의 미적 가치)

  • The purpose of this study is to define the special characteristics of the neoclassic style in eighteenth to nineteenth century fashion. Researching into philosophy and aesthetics in eighteenth to nineteenth century, the characteristics of the neoclassic style in fashion is considered the clarity of form, the utility of function, and the sensuality combined with body. The results of this study are as follows: The clarify of form is found in geometric form based on anatomical truth of the human body in relation with rational and scientific thoughts. The utility of function is found in simple and suitable construction considering purely practical purpose of dresses. The sensuality combined with body is found in natural silhouette dress alluding naked body in connection with Rousseau' naturalism. Understanding aesthetic value of the neoclassic style will help to develop fashion designs associated with neoclassical forms.

A Study on the Ritual Dancing Suit of Koryo Dynasty (궁중무용복식에 관한 연구(제2보)-고려시대 발생된 무용을 중심으로-)

  • This thesis focuses on how the dancing suit frequently used in the Korean royal court has been chronologically changed to that of the modern times. It also aims at how the implicit symbols shown in the royal court dancing suit are related to the traditional concepts and thoughts on Lunar-Solar-Five-Natural-Elements(Eum-Yang-Oh-Haeng). The results of this thesis are as follows. In the historical period of Koryo dynasty, the Buddhists religional ceremonies of YeonDueng-Hoi and PalGwan-Hoi favoured a ritual dancing of DangAakJeongJae originated from the old ancient China, and at the same time it also employed HyangAakJeongJae of Sin-la dynasty. Especially, the DangAakJeongJae contained the kinds of SooSeon-Dyo, Soo-YeonJang, PoTae-Aak, OhYa-ng-Seon, and YeonHwaDae-Mu; and the Hyang-AakJeongJae dealt with Moo-Go and Aa-Bak.

  • Recently, global pollution reached the critical level. Thus, new paradigm for the development and conservation of natural resources appear. This is so called Environmentally sound and Sustainable development. Ecological Architecture proposed as a proposal for the paradigm. This research deals with Christian Thoughts about the Ecological Architecture planning. The results are as follows; First, Sustainable development is new paradigm that is suitable for the Christian Integrity of Creation.   • This thesis analyzed the research method of Janggaebin(張介賓), a Traditional Chinese Medical expert in Ming Dynasty who studied traditional Chinese medicine in the perspective of Yeokri(易理). In his research, he mainly uses Hado(河圖), Nakseo(洛書) and Eight Diagrams to study medicine issues, the theory of Taegeuk(太極) figures to research natural evolvement, the ancient astronomy and calendar to explain the difficult problems in the theory of Ungi(運氣). This thesis has great value in understanding Janggaebin's medical thoughts and can guide further research on investigating the common root between traditional Chinese medicine and Yeokri.

  • Recently, Information Communication Technology(ICT) is one of the most important technology that supports the modern society. As the ICT rises, the needs of the nurturing talents, who can develop a service or hardware on the basis of the humanities increases. As a result, teaching programming skills to students studying humanities and social science are essential. Also, it is important to train students studying science and engineering to write their thoughts logically. In order to serve these students, we introduce a pedagogy for computer programming using programming essay. Since a program is a sequence of the operations based on the programmer's logical thinking, programming can be considered as describing programmer's logic in the proper order using programming syntax. In this research, we train students to describe their logic using natural language. Students write down their essays for a given programming problems. Also, we introduce a pedagogy guideline using programming essay.

  • Scandinavian countries have hold tradition shared historically and culturally in common, brought the weighty traditional thoughts enabled to develop their unique culture. Since 1940s, Scandinavian design could pervade with affectionate forms and practical effectiveness with worldwide popularity. It was brought by creation of new and useful forms for the convenience in life, functionalism but not bounded by fashion of it. This study tried into the meaning of their history of modern furnishings design based on the development background of furnishings design, its trends, designers and their work focused around Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. Scandinavian furnishings is a functional furnishings reconciled to natural material and human life exactly correspond to the taste of the generation unrestricted from the tradition of contemporary and compact design preference or classic favored preference. The practicality and exquisite techniques of Scandinavian furnishings lies within the realm of possibility for studiously love of the world.

  • The report of the intergovernment panel on climate change(IPCC) concluded that the global warning due to Green-house Gas(GHGs) will be accelerated in the 21th century. The railroad construction sector consumes a great deal of natural resources and energy in construction. maintenance, and demolition stage. In order to establish and perform reducing plan of GHGs of railway track system for effective corresponding the Climate Change Agreement, the evaluation method of the lifecycle CO2 emission if needed. In this research, it was investigates that the research trend for the LCCO2 and the method to estimate the lifecycle carbon dioxide emission amount of the railway track system as quantitative.
