  • The natural refrigerant $CO_2$has attracted as an alternative refrigerant currently used in air conditioning system, which has high global warming potential. In this study, the tribological characteristics of the sliding surfaces between a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll of the scroll compressor were investigated in $CO_2$/ POE mixed environment. The pin-on-disk type sliding tests were carried out under the various sliding speeds, normal loads. surface roughness, and pressures. During the test, friction forces, wear amount and surface temperature were monitored.

  • Natural convection within a wedge-shaped enclosure has been studied numerically by finite difference method. Radial surfaces of the wedge are isothermally hot and cold while circumferential surfaces are insulated. Results show isotherms, streamlines and velocity profiles as well as Nusselt number distributions for a Rayleigh number range of $10^3$ to $10^5$. In addition, it is found that there is a wedge angle as shown the minimum mean Nusselt number for using an insulated enclosure.

  • 본 연구의 목적의 하나는 기본 유동장과 온도장의 비평행성을 고려함으로써 등온 수직 원통표면 바깥에서의 자연대류 유동의 파형 불안정성에 대한 안정성 문제를 구성하는 것이다. 다음에는 기본 유동양들의 평행성을 고려한 단순화 가정하에 수치해석을 수행하여 안정성 특성에 대한 원통 곡률의 영향을 정성적으로 검토하는 것이다.

  • The numerical simulation on the three-dimensional natural convection heat transfer in the enclosure with heat generating chip is performed, and the effects of convective heat loss and vents are also examined. The effects of the Rayleigh number and outer Nusselt number (Nu$_{0}$) on the maximum chip temperature and the fractions of heat loss from the hot surfaces are investigated. The results show that conduction through the substrate is dominant in heat dissipation. With the increase of Rayleigh number, heat dissipation through the chip surfaces increases and heat loss through the substrate decreases. Maximum dimensionless temperature with vents is found to decrease about 40% compared to the one without vents at Nu$_{0}$=0.l. It is also shown that effects of size and location of the vents are negligible.ble.

비 다공성 표면에서 천연분말로 현출된 잠재지문의 농도계 이미지분석을 이용한 예비적인 반 정량적 평가 (Preliminary semi-quantitative evaluation of developed latent fingerprints on non-porous surface with natural powders using a densitometric image analysis)

  • 범죄현장조사에 사용되는 인체에 유해할 수 있는 일반분말에 대한 대체수단으로 천연분말(오징어 먹물분말, 청대분말, 쌀분말)을 이용하여 비 다공성표면(유리, 플라스틱, 타일)상의 잠재지문을 현출(가시화)하였다. 현출된 잠재지문을 Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS)으로 분석한 특징점의 수를 흑색분말을 사용한 결과 특징점 수와 비교하였으며 또한 객관적이고 계량적인 평가방법의 개발을 위하여 각 분말로 가시화된 지문의 이미지를 농도계 이미지분석(densitometric image analysis)을 이용한 결과 값인 융선 피크의 면적값을 비교하였다. 천연분말들의 현출효과는 표면에 따라 다양하게 나타났다. 일반적으로 오징어 먹물분말은 대부분의 표면에서 좋은 현출을 보였으며 청대분말은 타일표면에서 그리고 쌀분말은 유리표면에서 최고의 현출을 보였다. 그러나 플라스틱 표면은 천연분말에 의한 지문현출이 가장 어려운 표면이었다. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)를 이용한 이미지 분석에서 융선에 적절한 흡착력을 가지는 조건으로 천연분말 입자의 크기와 형태가 중요한 인자임을 확인할 수 있었다. 비록 기술적인 어려움으로 특징점의 수와 융선 피크의 면적값과의 상관관계를 볼 수는 없었으나 공평하고 객관적인 지문의 평가방법으로 기준 이미지의 사용을 통한 이미지 보정을 통하여 가능하리라고 사료된다. 저가의 저독성 천연분말은 추가적인 실험을 통하여 적절한 잠재지문 현출제로서의 가능성을 보일 것으로 사료된다.

기복을 이루는 수직벽에서 비뉴턴유체의 자연대류에 관한 연구 (A study of natural convection in non-Newtonian fluids induced by a vertical wavy surface)

  • A numerical investigation of natural convection flow along irregular vertical surfaces is reported. A transformation method is applied to the problem of natural convection under the assumption of a large Grashof number. A vertical wavy surface is used as an example to demonstrate the advantages of the transformation method, and to show the heat transfer mechanism near such surfaces. Surface non-uniformities on the boundary layer flow induced by a constant was temperature, semi-infinite surface are investigated. Also the effects of Prandtl number, flow index, and surface amplitude in Non-Newtonian fluids are discussed. When possible, the comparison of the numerical results shows a good agreement. The amplitude is proportional to the amplitude of a wavy surface. The results demonstrate that the local heat flux along a wavy surface is smaller than that of a flat surface. The frequency of the wavy surface is half that of the local heat transfer rate. The amplitude of the local Nusselt number gradually decreases downstream where the natural convection boundary layer grows thick.

  • We introduce polynomial PH-MPH transitive mappings which transform planar PH curves to MPH curves in ${\mathbb{R}}^{2,1}$, and prove that parameterizations of Enneper surfaces of the 1st and the 2nd kind and conjugates of Enneper surfaces of the 2nd kind are PH-MPH transitive. We show how to solve $C^1$ Hermite interpolation problems in ${\mathbb{R}}^{2,1}$, for an admissible $C^1$ Hermite data-set, by using the parametrization of Enneper surfaces of the 1st kind. We also show that we can obtain interpolants for at least some inadmissible data-sets by using MPH biarcs on Enneper surfaces of the 1st kind.

Bioinspired Metal Surfaces with Extreme Wettability Contrast

  • The exterior structures of natural organisms have continuously evolved by controlling wettability, such as the Namib Desert beetle, whose back has hydrophilic/hydrophobic contrast for water harvesting by mist condensation in dry desert environments, and some plant leaves that have hierarchical micro/nanostructures to collect or repel liquid water. In this work, we have provided a method for wettability contrast on metals by both nano-flake or needle patterns and tuning of the surface energy. Metals including steel alloys and aluminum were provided with hierarchical micro/nanostructures of metaloxides induced by fluorination and a subsequent catalytic reaction of fluorine ions on metal surfaces in water with various ranges from room to boiling temperature of water. Then, a hydrophobic material was deposited on the structured surfaces, rendering superhydrophobicity. Plasma oxidization induces the formation of superhydrophilic surfaces on selective regions surrounded by superhydrophobic surfaces. We show that wettability contrast surfaces align liquid water within patterned hydrophilic regions during the condensation process. Furthermore, this method could have a greater potential to align other liquids or living cells.

  • A simulator is proposed in this paper for predicting the RF signal level after propagating over sea and land surfaces. Various sea and land types and transmit/receive antenna patterns, as well as the locus of the transmit antenna, are considered for this simulator. At first, microwave reflection characteristics of various sea surfaces have been computed, based on an empirical formula which is developed in this study for the relation between the sea surface roughness and wind speed. Then, microwave reflections from land surfaces such as forests, agricultural areas, and bare surfaces, are computed using the first-order vector radiative transfer theory. Finally, the signal paths over sea and land surfaces are found using the ray tracing technique and the digital elevation model, and the signal level received by a receiving antenna is computed by the using the reflection coefficients of sea and land surfaces and the signal paths.

Morphology of the Dart and the Dart Sac in the Land Snail Nesiohelix samarangae

  • An anatomical and ultrastructural study on the dart sac and the dart of a Korean snail Nesiohelix samarangae was conducted to understand their morphological characteristics with the help of the light microscope and electron microscopes, TEM and SEM. Nesiolelix samarangae had two darts which are pure white structures 6-8 mm in length, tapering from 0.6-0.8 mm to 0.15-0.3 mm. The dart sac had a long conic lumen subdivided into two by a septal wall, and the darts were centrally embedded in the thick muscular layers of the sac. The darts occupied each of the two luminal spaces one per each. The convexed surfaces of the darts had many crystal buds in the shape of the petals. Otherwise, the convexed surfaces of the darts had numerous crystal buds in the shape of candle or topaz. The luminal surface of the dart sac was covered with a single columnar epithelium. The epithelial cells possessed microvilli on their free surface.
