  • Over twelve alkaloids were delected in the roots of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyor. Among them three alkaloids were isolated and were identified as $N_{9}$-formylharman, ethyl $\beta$-carboline-1-carboxylate and perlolyrine on the basis of spectroscopic studies.

  • In vivo antioxidant activities were screened over 30 kinds of crude drugs which are most frequently prescribed in oriental medicine. Of these, only Ginseng Radix, Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Zingiberis Rhizoma(steam dried), Alismatis Rhizoma, and Liriopes Tuber were shown to be positive in the activity.

  • An alkaloid was isolated form water-soluble fraction of Panax ginseng roots. It was characterized by spectroscopic data and dynthesis as 4, 5, 6, 7-tetrahydroimidazo (4, 5-c) pyridine-6-carboxylic acid or spinacine, which was first isolated from the plant kingdom.

  • Alcohol extracts of plants widely used in the traditional medicine have been tested to establish if they affect the metabolism of drug in mice. Forteen of the plants tested exhibited prolonging and/or inhibitory effect on hexobarbital sleeping time. Some of them also showed increasing effect on strychnine mortality, whereas piperis retrofracti Fructus reduced the toxicity of strychnine.
