  • In order to find the optimum design of structures that have characteristic natural frequency range, a numerical optimization method to solving eigenvalue problems is a widely used approach. However in the most cases, it is difficult to decide the accurate thickness and shape of structures that have allowable natural frequency in design constraints. Parallel analysis algorithm involving the feasible direction optimization method and Rayleigh-Ritz eigenvalue solving method is developed. The method is implemented by using finite element method. It calculates the optimal thickness and the thickness ratio of individual elements of the 2-D plane element through a parallel algorithm method which satisfy the design constraint of natural frequency. As a result this method of optimization for natural frequency by using finite element method can determine the optimal size or its ratio of geometrically complicated shape and large scale structure.

  • This paper provides the basic theory and numerical results of shell design optimization considering the appearance of close natural frequencies in optimization process. In this study the fundamental natural frequency to be maximized is considered as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. In addition, the constraints related to natural frequency is also adopted to avoid the natural frequency closeness phenomenon during the optimization iteration. The Coon's patch is used to represent the shape and thickness distribution of shells. A degenerated shell finite element is adopted to calculate the fundamental natural frequency of the shells. The SQP available in the optimizer DoT is used to search optimum solution. From numerical results, the introduction of the frequency constraint into shell design optimization can deeply affect on the final optimum shape of shells although it is likely to be used to avoid the frequency closeness phenomenon.

  • A multi-objective optimization technique was implemented to obtain optimal topologies of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood simultaneously considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion and natural frequency. In addition, a smoothing scheme was used to suppress the checkerboard patterns in the ESO method. Two models with different curvature were chosen in order to investigate the effect of curvature on the static stiffness and natural frequency of the inner reinforcement. A scale factor was employed to properly reflect the effect of each objective function. From several combinations of weighting factors, a Pareto-optimal topology solution was obtained. As the weighting factor for the elastic strain efficiency went from 1 to 0, the optimal topologies transmitted from the optimal topology of a static stiffness problem to that of a natural frequency problem. It was also found that the higher curvature model had a larger static stiffness and natural frequency than the lower curvature model. From the results, it is concluded that the ESO method with a smoothing scheme was effectively applied to topology optimization of the inner reinforcement of a vehicle's hood.

  • For the optimization of the fundamental natural frequency of stiffened cylindrical shells, simulations were performed for cylindrical shells that were stiffened with between one and five ring stiffeners. ANSYS 11.0 was used to simulate the optimization for the natural frequency. The Subproblem Approximation Method was applied as the optimization method. The design function of the optimization was the geometry of the T-shaped ring stiffener, and the constraint function was the maximum additional volume, constrained to a 10% increase. The objective function of the optimization was chosen to maximize the fundamental natural frequency. The performance index for optimal design was defined as the ratio of the natural frequency to the volume of the unstiffened and stiffened shells. The optimal performance index was obtained for the shell stiffened with three rings.

  • We present the minimum weight optimum design of cross sectional for frame structures subject to natural frequency. The optimum design in this paper employ discrete and continuous design variables and Genetic Algorithms. In this paper, Genetic Algorithms is used in optimization process, and be used the method of Elitism and penalty parameters in order to improved fitness in the reproduction process. For 1-Bay 2-Story frame structure, in examples, continuous and discrete design variables are used, and W-section (No.1~No.64), from AISC, discrete data are used in discrete optimization. In this case, Exhaustive search are used for finding global optimum. Continuous variables are used for 1-Bay 7-Story frame structure. Two typical frame structure optimization examples are employed to demonstrate the availability of Genetic Algorithms for solving minimum weight optimum of frame structures with fundamental and multi frequency.

  • The TFT-LCD is extensively used from a small watch to a large TV display, and the demand is increasing rapidly. The size of R-LCD glass plate becomes more bigger, and the thickness become more thinner with high demands. As a result natural frequency of the TFT-LCD glass plate becomes more lower. The TFT-LCD glass plate will be moved by robot arm and may receive effect of vibration that occur at transfer. Natural frequency of the TFT-LCD glass plate is increased or decrease according to location that robot arm fixs glass plate. Purpose of a this study is finding support location that optimize the first natural frequency of TFT-LCD glass plate. The size optimization method of ANSYS 8.0 is used as the optimization tool search on the optimal support location of TFT-LCD glass plate. The considered number of support point is from 4 to 9.

  • We present the optimum design for the cross-sectional(sizing) and shape optimization of truss structures with natural frequency constraints. The optimum design method used in this paper employs continuous design variables and the Harmony Search Algorithm(HSA). HSA is a meta-heuristic search method for global optimization problems. In this paper, HSA uses the method of random number selection in an update process, along with penalty parameters, to construct the initial harmony memory in order to improve the fitness in the initial and update processes. In examples, 10-bar and 72-bar trusses are optimized for sizing, and 37-bar bridge type truss and 52-bar(like dome) for sizing and shape. Four typical truss optimization examples are employed to demonstrate the availability of HSA for finding the minimum weight optimum truss with multiple natural frequency constraints.

  • The aim of this research is to construct eigenfrequency optimization codes for plates with Arbitrary Rank Microstructures. From among noise factors, resonance sound is main reason for floor's solid noise. But, Resonance-elusion design codes are not fixed so far. Besides, The prediction of composite material's capability and an resonance elusion by controlling natural frequency of plate depend on designer's experiences. In this paper, First, using computer program with arbitrary rank microstructure, variation on composite material properties is studied, and then natural frequency control is performed by plate topology optimization method. The results of this study are as followed. 1) Programs that calculate material properties along it's microstructure composition and control natural frequency on composite material plate are coded by Homogenization and Topology Optimization method. and it is examined by example problem. 2) Equivalent material properties, calculated by program, are examined for natural frequency. In this paper, Suggested programs are coded using $Matlab^{TM}$, Feapmax and Feap Library with Homogenization and Topology Optimization method. and Adequacy of them is reviewed by performing the maximization or minimization of natural frequency for plates with isotropic or anisotropic materials. Since the programs has been designed for widely use. If the mechanism between composite material and other structural member is identified, extension application may be possible in field of structure maintenance, reinforcement etc. through application of composite material.

  • In this paper, both an approximate expression and an exact expression for the contribution factor of an element to the natural frequency of the finite element discretized system of a structure in general and a membrane in particular have been derived from the energy conservation principle and the finite element formulation of structural eigenvalue problems. The approximate expression for the contribution factor of an element is used to predict and determine the elements to be removed in an iteration since it depends only on the quantities associated with the old system in the iteration. The exact expression for the contribution factor of an element makes it possible to check whether the element is correctly removed at the end of an iteration because it depends on both the old system and the new system in the iteration. Thus, the combined use of the approximate expression and the exact expression allows a considerable number of elements to be removed in a single iteration so that the efficiency of the evolutionary structural optimization method can be greatly improved for solving the natural frequency optimization problem of a structure. A square membrane with different boundary supports has been chosen to investigate the general evolutionary path for the fundamental natural frequency of the structure. The related results indicated that if the objective of a structural optimization is to raise the fundamental natural frequency of the structure to an optimal value, the general evolutionary path during its optimization is that the elements are gradually removed along the direction from the area surrounded by the contour of the highest value to that surrounded by the contour of the lowest value.
