  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and $C_{60}$-encapsulated SWNTs ($C_{60}@SWNTs$) are introduced to Ru-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (PECs), and photocurrents are compared between two cells, i.e., an $RuL_2(NCS)_2$/DAPV/SWNTs/ITO cell and an $RuL_2(NCS)_2$/DAPV/$C_{60}@SWNTs$/ITO cell. [L = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid, DAPV = di-(3-aminopropyl)-viologen, and ITO = indium-tin oxide] The photocurrents are increased by 70.6% in the presence of $C_{60}@SWNTs$. To explain the photocurrent increase, the reverse-field emission method is used, i.e., $RuL_2(NCS)_2$/DAPV/SWNTs/ITO cell (or $RuL_2(NCS)_2$/DAPV/$C_{60}@SWNTs$/ITO cell) as an anode and a counter electrode Pt as a cathode in the external electric field. The improved field emission properties, i.e., ${\beta}$ (field enhancement factor) and emission currents in the reverse-field emission with $C_{60}@SWNTs$ indicate the enhancement of the PEC electric field, which implies the improvement of the electron transfer rate along with the reduced charge recombination in the cell.

  • In order to estimate the combustion characteristics and the gas interchangeability for natural gas with various compositions per each production area, equivalent gas are using to replace natural gas. It is known that an equivalent gas has the same the heating value, the compression factor, the relative density, CO emission and the burning velocity as the original natural gas. However, it is not reported that the flame shape and thermal efficiency and NOx emission by real gas appliance. In this study, equivalent gas was examined the validation to replace natural gas. The CO emission the burning velocity and the flame temperature were reconfirmed, and the flame shape, the NOx emission and the thermal efficiency were numerically and experimentally investigated. As results, there was not a large difference between natural gas and equivalent gas. This result demonstrated that there was no problem using equivalent gas to replace natural gas.

  • For the application of Jeju scoria scattered around the island as a natural dye, cotton fabrics were dyed with the dye and their properties were measured including dyeability, colorfastness, antibacterial activity, deodorization efficiency, ultraviolet protection, and far-infrared emission. The dyed cotton fabrics were in yellowish red and optimal dyeing conditions were obtained with a colorant concentration of 25%(o.w.b) at a temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ for the dyeing time of 120 minutes. The ratings of colorfastness to light, rubbing, perspiration, and washing were 8, 5, 5, and 4~5 respectively. After 15 wash cycles, colorfastness remained as much as 4~5 rating. The cotton fabric dyed with Jeju scoria demonstrated excellent antimicrobial activity and deodorization efficiency of 99.9% and 93.9% respectively. Ultraviolet protection factor was 50+. Far-infrared emission rate and far-infrared emission intensity were 90% and 362(W/$m^2{\cdot}{\mu}m$) respectively. The Jeju scoria can be introduced as a new colorant for the natural dyeing of cotton.

  • This study is to examine the emission quantity of $CO_2$ gas as the environmental load in office buildings. After the investigation of monthly consumption of each energy source(electricity and natural gas), it is analyzed that the $CO_2$ emission quantity of 34 office buildings surveyed is 22.4 kg-c/$m^2$-year, which consists of 17.5 kg-c/$m^2$-year by consurunlelectncif. and 4.9 kg-c/$m^2$-year by consuming natural gas. And the $CO_2$ emission quantity of each load in those buildings consists of 68% emitted by general electricity, 16% by cooling load and 16% by beating load. It is also proposed that the $CO_2$ emission quantity of cooling and heating load is profoundly pertinent to the variation of outdoor temperature.

  • BACKGROUND: Composted animal manure applied to the arable soil for improving soil quality and enhancing crop productivity causes greenhouse gas emissions such as nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) by processes of nitrification and denitrification. However, little studies have been conducted on determining effect of application ratio of composted animal manure on $N_2O$ emission rate and its annual emission pattern from upland soil in South Korea. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine $N_2O$ emission rate and its annual emission pattern from upland soil supporting for sweet potato. METHODS AND RESULTS: Composted animal manure was applied at the ratio of 0, 10, and 20 Mg/ha to an upland soil supporting for sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). Nitrous oxide emission was examined during growing season and non-growing season from May 2016 through May 2017. Daily $N_2O$ fluxes showed peaks right after applications of composted animal manure and inorganic nitrogen fertilizer. Precipitation and soil water content affected daily $N_2O$ flux during non-growing season. Especially, $N_2O$ flux was strongly associated with water filled pore space (WFPS). We assumed that the majority of $N_2O$ measured during growing season of sweet potato was produced from nitrification and subsequent denitrification. Annual cumulative $N_2O$ emission rate significantly increased with increasing application ratio of composted animal manure. It increased to 12.0 kg/ha/yr from 8.73 kg/ha/yr at control with 10 Mg/ha of composted animal manure and to 14.0 kg/ha/yr of $N_2O$ emission with 20 Mg/ha of the manure. CONCLUSION: To reduce $N_2O$ emission from arable soil, further research on developing management strategy associated with use of the composted animal manure and soil moisture is needed.

  • Synthetic natural gas(SNG), acquired from coal, is regarded as an alternative to natural gas since a rise in natural gas due to high oil price can be coped with it. In the present study, 11-liter heavy duty compressed natural gas(CNG) engine was employed in order to examine the combustion and emission characteristics of SNG. The simulated SNG, made up 90.95% of methane, 6.05% propane and 3% hydrogen was used in the experiment. Power output, thermal efficiency, combustion stability and emission characteristics were compared to those with CNG at the same engine operating conditions. Knocking phenomenon was also analyzed at 1260 rpm, full load condition. Combustion with SNG was more stable than CNG. Nitrogen oxides emissions increased while Carbon dioxides emissions decreased. Anti-knocking characteristics were improved with SNG.

  • A three-way catalyst system of a natural gas vehicle (NGV) has characteristics of higher fuel consumption and higher thermal load than a lean-bum catalyst system. To meet stringent emission standards in the future, NGV with the lean-bum engine may need a catalyst system to reduce the amounts of HC, CO and NOx emission, although natural gas system has low emission characteristics. We conducted experiments to evaluate the conversion efficiency of the NOx reduction catalyst for the lean-burn natural gas engine. The NOx reduction catalysts were prepared with the ${\gamma}-Al_{2}O_3$ washcoat including Ba based on Pt, Pd and Rh precious metal. In the experiments, effective parameters were space velocity, spike duration of the rich condition, and the temperature of flowing model gas. From the results of the experiments, we found that the temperature for maximum NOx reduction was around $450^{\circ}C$, and the space velocity for optimum NOx reduction was around $30,000\;h^{-1}$ And we developed an evaluation model of the NOx reduction catalyst to evaluate the conversion performance of each other catalysts.

  • Natural gas is considered to be a promising alternative fuel for passenger cars, truck transportation and stationary engines providing positive effects both on the environment and energy security. However, since the composition of natural gas fuel varies with location, climate and other factors, it is anticipated that such changes in fuel properties will affect emission characteristics and performance of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engines. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of the difference in gas composition on the engine performance and emission characteristics. The results show that THC (Total Hydrocarbon) decreases with increasing Wl (Wobbe Index) and MCP (Maximum Combustion Potential). On the other hand, it is observed that NOx slightly increases as Wl and MCP increase. The TLHV (Total Lower Heating Value of Intake) is proposed in this study as a potential index for compatibility of gas fuels in a CNG engine. There is a variation in power up to 20% depending on the composition of gas when the A/F ratio and spark timing are flexed for a specific gas fuel.
