  • This study is investigated numerically on the heat transfer characteristics of surface radiation-natural convection interactions in a two dimensional enclosure assumed Ondol cavity. Mean Nusselt number of the bottom surface with surface radiation is increased by increasing wall emissivity and by decreasing dimensionless thickness of adiabatic wall. and is greater than that without radiation. Mean Nusselt number of the bottom surface for convection only with surface radiation is slightly smaller than that without surface radiation with decrease dimensionless thickness of adiabatic wall.

  • Thermal analysis of new designed heat-sink models was carried out according to the natural ana the forced convection using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). Heat resistance of wave type, top vented wave type and plate type of heat sink was compared with each other As the direction of fin and air flow are vertical(z-axis), it is shown that radiant heat performance of all of heat sinks was superior than other experimental conditions. Especially, the heat resistance of top vented wave heat sink was $0.17^{\circ}C/W$(forced convection) and $0.48^{\circ}C/W$(natural convection). The radiant heat performance of heat sink was increased with increasing the height of fin and the width of fin pitch.

  • A numerical study has been conducted on the combined radiation-natural convection heat transfer characteristics in a square cavity with a selectively transparent wall. The fluid in the cavity is assumed to be transparent to the thermal radiation. The effect of the wall emissivity is mainly considered in view of the temperature and flow fields. The comparison of the radiative heat flux and conductive heat flux variations along the isothermal wall is presented as well. The results show that the Nusselt number distribution is fairly uniform due to the com-pensative interaction of the radiation and convection heat transfer.

  • This study of thermal convection uses the following geometry: a horizontal layer of fluid heated from below of solid lid at bottom and cooled from above. A variety range of thermal conductivity ratio, $\kappa$ is considered to investigate the interface temperature, $\theta_{i}$ between solid and fluid region. Periodic boundary conditions are employed in the horizontal direction to allow for lateral freedom for the convection cells. A two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained, using an accurate and efficient Chebyshev spectral multi-domain methodology, for different effective Rayleigh numbers, $Ra_{eff}$ varying over the range of $10^{4}\;to\;10^{7}$ in which the effective Rayleigh number is defined as $Ra{\times}<\overline{T}_{i}>$.

  • This study deals with the interaction between buoyancy-induced convection and externally imposed excitation in the form of harmonic rocking and the effect of the interaction upon heat transfer in low-Pr liquids. A wide array of system responses are discussed using the spectral collocation numerical technique. The superposition of buoyancy and Coriolis forces leads to complex fluid flow and heat transfer. The transition to chaotic convection is accelerated, and heat transfer rates are reduced as the enclosure is excited at the fundamental frequency of oscillation associated with the pure buoyancy-driven case. Average heat transfer rates are correlated for Pr=0.02 and 0.03. The heat transfer is affected more in the Pr=0.03 liquid than the case of Pr=0.02.

  • Numerical simulation of natural convection along a vertical wall was carried out to evaluate the computational fluid dynamics simulator, which is to be utilized for study of vertical wall fires. The computed velocity and temperature profiles were compared with measurements over the turbulent boundary layer formed along the wall of 4m high and constant temperature. It fumed out that the simulator with default parameters failed to predict the turbulent natural convection showing the boundary layer flow laminar. The grid size $\Delta$x=5mm, ${\Delta}y={\Delta}z=10mm$ and Smagorinsky constant of the large eddy simulation $C_s$=0.1 were chosen through parametric investigations. Though turbulent mixing was not enough, the velocity distribution near wall, peak velocity, and temperature profile in the turbulent boundary layer agreed well with the measurements.

  • A numerical analysis of the effect of the position of a circular cylinder in a $45^{\circ}$ tilted enclosure on natural convection in the enclosure is presented. The location of the cylinder is changed between -0.4 and 0.4. The Rayleigh number is varied between $10^3$ and $10^5$. The effect of the location of the cylinder on natural convection in the enclosure is analyzed by the isothermal line, stream line, and surface-averaged Nusselt number. The flow and heat transfer characteristics are independent of time in the range of the Rayleigh number and cylinder location that is considered in this study. The surface-averaged Nusselt number of the cylinder and enclosure increases as the cylinder gets closer to the wall of the enclosure.

  • Natural convection heat transfers on inclined flat plates were measured for Grashof numbers of $8.06{\times}10^7$ and $3.45{\times}10^9$ by using a copper sulfate electroplating system. The inclinations of the plates were varied from upward-facing horizontal to downward-facing horizontal. Test results for the downward-facing plate agree well with the existing theory that the Nusselt number can be calculated by replacing gravitational acceleration, g with g $cos{\theta}$ in the heat transfer correlation for the vertical plate. The natural convection flows for the upward-facing plate follow two distinct flow regimes: boundary layer regime and flow separation regime. The copper plating pattern for the upward-facing plates clearly reveals the flow separation points.

  • This paper investigated the vertical throughflow effects on natural convection due to heating from below in horizontal porous layer. The motion of the fluid in the porous layer is governed by Brinkman-Darcy equation. And compared Critical Rayleigh number in case of throughflow with no throughflow. Investigated Nusslet number, isothermalline and flow with the variation of the strength of throughflow in a constant Rayleigh number. In the numerical analysis, flow is assumed to be two-dimensional and unsteady. The numerical scheme used is a finite-difference method. In the experimental study, Temperature distribution was measured by use of Liquid Crystal film. As a results, indicated that throughflow influences largely on the temperature field and as the strength of throughflow increased, unstability of natural convection decreased. Also it could predict the strength of natural convection with the measured Nusselt number.
