Photorealistic Ray-traced Visualization Approach for the Interactive Biomimetic Design of Insect Compound Eyes

  • In this study, we propose a biomimetic optical structure design methodology for investigating micro-optical mechanisms associated with the compound eyes of insects. With these compound eyes, insects can respond fast while maintaining a wide field of view. Also, considerable research attention has been focused on the insect compound eyes to utilize these benefits. However, their nano micro-structures are complex and challenging to demonstrate in real applications. An effectively integrated design methodology is required considering the manufacturing difficulty. We show that photorealistic ray-traced visualization is an effective method for designing the biomimetic of a micro-compound eye of an insect. We analyze the image formation mechanism and create a three-dimensional computer-aided design model. Then, a ray-trace visualization is applied to observe the optical image formation. Finally, the segmented images are stitched together to generate an image with a wide-angle; the image is assessed for quality. The high structural similarity index (SSIM) value (approximately 0.84 to 0.89) of the stitched image proves that the proposed MATLAB-based image stitching algorithm performs effectively and comparably to the commercial software. The results may be employed for the understanding, researching, and design of advanced optical systems based on biological eyes and for other industrial applications.

  • Marine environment analysis and ship motion prediction during ship navigation are important technologies for safe and economical operation of autonomous ships. As a marine environment analysis technology, there is a method of analyzing waves by measuring the sea states through images acquired based on radar(radio detection and ranging) signal. However, in the process of deriving marine environment information from radar images, noises generated by external factors are included, limiting the interpretation of the marine environment. Therefore, image processing for noise removal is required. In this study, image inpainting by partial convolutional neural network model is proposed as a method to remove noises and reconstruct radar images.

  • AI-based image detection technology offers a promising solution for identifying defects in car doors, significantly improving efficiency compared to traditional human inspections. This paper introduces an advanced automatic defect detection system utilizing camera-recorded datasets and trained models to identify defects in aluminum car doors. Unlike previous models focused on aluminum castings, this is the first application specifically targeting car doors. Despite progress in defect detection research, challenges such as data imbalance, complex defect characteristics, and limited research on aluminum car doors persist. To address these issues, we propose the LKADenseNet201 model, enhancing the DenseNet201 architecture with a large kernel attention mechanism.While doing this, we focus on 3 important issues: image augmentation, channel attention and model evaluation.Our image processing process mainly include image augmentation. With image augmentation, we aimed to make data diversity suitable for the real world by obtaining data from different angles and to eliminate the imbalance between defect and normal images. This improvement boosts the model's ability to perceive contextual features and increases computational efficiency, essential for detailed spatial understanding and time-critical tasks. Our approach not only enhances operator efficiency but also moves towards automating the inspection process.

  • In this paper, we propose a coding method to improve compression efficiency for MR image. This can be achieved by combining coding and segmentation scheme which removes noisy background region, which is meaningless for diagnosis, in MR image. The wavelet coder encodes only diagnostically significant foreground regions refering to segmentation map. Our proposed algorithm provides about 15% of bitrate reduction when compared with the same coder which is not combined with segmentation scheme. And the proposed scheme shows better reconstructed image Qualify than JPEG at the same compression ratio.

  • We have developed a laser ultrasonic system for visualization of elastic waves propagating on a solid surface, in order to visualize ultrasonic waves propagating on opaque media. This system can produce a series of successive images as an animation of wave propagation, because of scanning an optical heterodyne probe to measure surface transient displacements. Using this visualization technique, we observed the scattering and diffraction of ultrasonic waves around various shapes of artificial defects, and examined its application to nondestructive inspection.   • Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) values is determined numerically with T or Z-score while the image is not considered in the interpretation. Abnormal finding was observed in the left femoral bone density image of a 64-year-old female patient who underwent a left kidney transplantation. This was due to the ethiodized oil used for embolization in the treatment of lymphatic leakage. Radiologic technologists should not only monitor changes of BMD values, but keep in mind to assess the changes in the image to provide accurate information to the patient.

  • In this paper, we described development of on-board image processing system and its process and verified its performance through flight experiment. The image processing board has single ARM(Advanced Risk Machine) processor. We performed Embedded Linux Porting. Algorithm to be applied for object tracking is color-based image processing algorithm, it can be designed to track the object that has specific color on ground in real-time. To verify performance of the on-board image processing system, we performed flight test using the PNUAV, UAV developed by LAB. Also, we performed optimization of the image processing algorithm and kernel to improve real-time performance. Finally we confirmed that proposed system can track the blue-color object within four pixels error range consistently in the experiment.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find out the relation factors of weight control behaviors, mental health status and body image perception in adolescents and to use basis data of health promotion for adolescents. Methods: This study used data from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V-2, 2011). The subjects were 653 between 12-19 age. Data analysis was done with SPSS/WIN 19.0 using Chi-square test, and Logistic regression. Results: The result is as follows. The case of female adolescents, abnormal perception of body image was significantly higher on weight reduction effort and normal weight, low weight in BMI. The case of male adolescents, abnormal perception of body image was higher on normal weight in BMI. Conclusions: The adolescents tend to do unreasoning weight loss behavior without properly perception for their body image. Therefore, we suggest that adolescents be provided social support for positive body image and be developed perception program with the importance of inner values.

  • Log-polar coordinate image space is proposed as a solution for the problem of unbounded accumulator space in the automatic detection of vanishing points. The proposed method can detect vanishing points at high speed under small memory requirements, as opposed to conventional image space based methods.

  • We first show how to construct the linear operator equations corresponding to Tikhonov regularization problems for solving image deblurring problems with nearly separable point spread functions. We next propose a Kronecker product preconditioner which is suitable for the global PCG method. Lastly, we provide numerical experiments of the global PCG method with the Kronecker product preconditioner for several image deblurring problems to evaluate its effectiveness.
