DS-PAM UWB System Using Non-linear Chirp Waveform

  • We propose a direct-sequence pulse-amplitude modulation (DS-PAM) ultra-wideband (UWB) system which employs a non-linear chirp waveform instead of the conventional Gaussian monocycle in this paper. In the approved frequency for UWB, there exist myriad narrowband interferers. Specifically, we focus on the mutual interference between UWB systems and 802.11a WLAN. This paper offers a method to suppress this in-band narrowband interference by introducing a kind of non-linear chirp waveform. Using the proposed non-linear chirp waveform, the effects of one or more narrowband interference sources with different frequencies can be suppressed. System performance of UWB systems in the narrowband interference environment can be improved. Computer simulations with additive white Gaussian noise successfully demonstrate an increase in performance with the proposed system as compared to traditional linear chirp systems.

  • 많은 실제 능동 소음 제어 분야에서 주요 소음은 다수의 인접한 배음으로 구성된다. 또한 협대역 능동 소음 제어 시스템은 정현파 세트나 혹은 합으로 구성된 기준 신호에 의해 동작하는 적응 필터들로 구성된다. 본 논문은 직접형, 병렬 형, 간소화한 병렬 형의 능동 소음 제어 시스템이 기본 주파수와 인접한 정현파의 주파수 간격에 영향을 받음을 보여주고 이를 분석한다. 또한 본 논문은 기준 주파수에 독립적인 새로운 간소화한 병렬 형 협대역 능동 소음 제어 시스템을 제안한다. 본 논문에서의 제시한 분석을 증명하고 새로운 협대역 능동 소음 제어 시스템을 기존 협대역 능동 소음 제어 시스템과 비교하기 위해 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 수행한다.

  • 본 논문에서는 화력발전소 보일러 운전원 근무실 소음제어를 위하여 협대역 능동소음 제어시스템을 제안하였다. 제안된 시스템은 기준입력으로 구형파를 사용하여 기본파는 물론 고조파까지 한꺼번에 제어할 수 있게 하였으며, adjoint LMS 알고리즘을 사용하여 기존의 filtered-X LMS 알고리즘을 사용한 경우보다 계산량을 줄였다. 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 결과, 기존의 광대역 능동소음 제어시스템에 비해 훨씬 작은 자수의 적응 필터를 사용하였으나, 더 우수한 특성을 보였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 근거리 무선환경에서 초광대역 Impulse Radio 시스템과 기존의 협대역 통신 시스템의 주파수 공존을 위한 협대역 간섭 제거 기법을 제안하였다. 협대역 통신 시스템은 Impulse Radio 시스템의 주파수 대역에서 협대역 간섭의 원인이 될 수 있다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 다중간섭 및 협대역 간섭 환경에서 Impulse Radio 통신 시스템의 간섭 영향을 분석하고, 효과적인 성능 개선을 위하여 복소다중 필터뱅크와 CCI 간섭제거기를 동시에 채용함으로써 수신성능의 개선을 얻을 수 있었다.

  • 본 논문에서는 여러 개의 참고입력을 사용하는 기존의 주파수 영역 협대역 잡음 제거기의 성능이 참고신호에 포함된 협대역 성분과 광대역 방해 신호에 의해 결정됨을 보였다. 또한 기존의 협대역 잡음 제거기 보다 효율적이고 빠른 수렴 속도를 얻기 위해 주신호와 참고신호들의 MSC(Magnitude Squared Coherence)를 사용하여 참고신호의 SNR을 측정하고, 이를 바탕으로 적응 필터의 갱신 여부를 결정하는 새로운 협대역 적응 잡음 제거 기법을 제안하였다. 수식적 분석을 통하여 광대역 방해 신호의 영향을 분석하였으며, 제안한 기법이 기존 기법보다 더 우수한 성능을 보임을 확인하였다.

Crack localization by laser-induced narrowband ultrasound and nonlinear ultrasonic modulation

  • The laser ultrasonic technique is gaining popularity for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) applications because it is a noncontact and couplant-free method and can inspect a target from a remote distance. For the conventional laser ultrasonic techniques, a pulsed laser is often used to generate broadband ultrasonic waves in a target structure. However, for crack detection using nonlinear ultrasonic modulation, it is necessary to generate narrowband ultrasonic waves. In this study, a pulsed laser is shaped into dual-line arrays using a spatial mask and used to simultaneously excite narrowband ultrasonic waves in the target structure at two distinct frequencies. Nonlinear ultrasonic modulation will occur between the two input frequencies when they encounter a fatigue crack existing in the target structure. Then, a nonlinear damage index (DI) is defined as a function of the magnitude of the modulation components and computed over the target structure by taking advantage of laser scanning. Finally, the fatigue crack is detected and localized by visualizing the nonlinear DI over the target structure. Numerical simulations and experimental tests are performed to examine the possibility of generating narrowband ultrasonic waves using the spatial mask. The performance of the proposed fatigue crack localization technique is validated by conducting an experiment with aluminum plates containing real fatigue cracks.

  • An M-ary bi-orthogonal modulation scheme for ultra-wideband (UWB) systems capable of narrowband interference (NBI) suppression is proposed in this letter. We utilize a set of bi-orthogonal pulse series to achieve NBI suppression. Through analysis and simulation, we verify that the proposed scheme can suppress NBIs effectively.

  • In this letter, we analyze an ultra-wideband ranging system based on non-linear chirp waveforms with the ability of narrowband interference suppression. A number of non-linear chirp waveforms are proposed and evaluated by simulation. The results verify that the proposed schemes can suppress the Narrowband interference to a certain degree.

On Narrowband Interference Suppression in OFDM-based Systems with CDMA and Weighted-type Fractional Fourier Transform Domain Preprocessing

  • In this paper, we propose a new scheme to suppress the narrowband interference (NBI) in OFDM-based systems. The scheme utilizes code division multiple access (CDMA) and weighted-type fractional Fourier transform (WFRFT) domain preprocessing technologies. Through setting the WFRFT order, the scheme can switch into a single carrier (SC) or a multi-carrier (MC) frequency division multiple access block transmission system. The residual NBI can be eliminated to the maximum extent when the WFRFT order is selected properly. Final simulation results show that the proposed system can outperform MC and SC with CDMA and frequency domain preprocessing in terms of the narrowband interference suppression.

Improvement of Ultra-wideband Link Performance over Bands Requiring Interference Mitigation in Korea

  • Ultra-wideband (UWB) systems have witnessed a debate over whether they may cause interference to other existing and future narrowband systems sharing their band of operation. The detect and avoid (DAA) mechanism was developed as a solution to reduce interference to narrowband systems in order to ease regulatory concerns. It works by adaptively reducing the transmitted power at the overlapping bands upon detecting an active narrowband link. However, employing DAA degrades the performance of UWB transmissions. In this paper, we present the Korean UWB regulations as an example of regulations that require DAA in certain bands. We investigate DAA's impact on performance and propose a method to mitigate it, which provides UWB with the more efficient support of the DAA mechanism and enables it to avoid a larger number of narrowband users while sustaining the data rate. Results show significant improvement in performance with the application of our technique compared to conventional performance.
