웹드라마 <오구실>의 내레이션 기능 연구 (The Function of Voice-over Narration in the Web-drama OH Ku-sil)

  • 이 연구는 <오구실>의 스토리텔링에 있어서 내레이션이 차지하는 중요성과 그 기능들을 이해하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 연구의 결과, 1인칭 내레이션의 경우 주관적 진술을 통해 시청자와의 친밀감을 제고하였으며 하나의 내레이션이 두 개의 시간대와 연관될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 1인칭 내레이션과 달리 3인칭 내레이션은 기존 영상 매체에서의 역할로부터 그 쓰임새를 확장시키고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 첫째, <오구실>의 3인칭 내레이션은 스토리 이해에 필수적인 정보를 시청자에게 전달하는 핵심적인 기능을 수행하였다. 둘째, 기존 영상 매체에서의 객관적/권위적 진술로부터 주관적/권유적 진술로 그 기능이 변화하고 있었다. 셋째, 희화적인 진술을 통해 3인칭 내레이터가 해설자로부터 가상의 등장인물로 그 역할의 범위를 넓혀가고 있음 또한 확인하였다. 이는 빠듯한 시간 제약 하에서 효율적인 스토리텔링을 추구하는 웹드라마의 매체 특성에 대한 기존 내레이션의 대응으로 볼 수 있으며, 이처럼 진일보한 내레이션은 스토리 정보와 재미의 요소를 속도감 있게 전달하면서 기피해야 할 스토리텔링 방식에서 벗어나 웹드라마라는 새로운 매체의 필수 요소이자 존재 조건으로 진화하고 있다.

"단편소설집의 사이클"로서 단 리의 『옐로우』 연구 (Reading Don Lee's Yellow as a Short Story Cycle)

  • In this paper, I'll try to read Don Lee's Yellow intertextually with a more canonical text, Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, in order to see what kind of traditions and techniques Yellow references and/or rewrites as a way of tracking this production. Yellow's formal properties as a short story cycle are established through its use of particular conventions. For instance, Yellow follows the short story cycle model that includes the assemblage of recurring characters into one locale. Yellow's characters are all connected to and at some point located in the fictional small town of Rosarita Bay, California. The text form aligns it with established literary conventions and traditions and suggests the author's reliance upon or trust in those modes. Yellow's setting in a small town alludes to and has often been compared to Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, which is perhaps one of the most well-known and extensively discussed short story cycles in American literature. Also following convention is Lee's construction of Rosarita Bay and the text's third person narrator as a member of that town. Both Rosarita Bay and the narrator become important figures through the related-tale nature of the text. The method of story-telling is similar to how the town Winesburg and its "seemingly sympathetic and non-overtly judgmental" narrator are operational in Anderson's text. In sum, Yellow is opportune for intertextual reading largely because it is a collection of stories that create a linked series.

  • 손톤 와일더(Thornton Wilder, 1897~1975)의 대표작인 『우리읍내(Our Town)』(1938)의 무대감독(stage manager) 역(役)은 배우의 연기적인 접근 방식, 연출가의 무대형상화 방법론, 관객의 연극을 체험하는 관극형태 등에서 무척이나 흥미롭고 다양한 관점을 제시하는 독특한 극적 장치이다. 와일더가 『우리읍내』에서 무대감독 역(役)을 단순 해설자(narrator)의 틀로 한정하지 않고 무대감독(stage manager)이라 명명한 이유는 무엇인가? 그것은 『우리읍내』에는 드라마가 필수적으로 갖추어야 할 기본 요소가 의도적으로 결여되어 있기 때문에 과감히 생략된 시공간을 포함한 극작술의 여백을 무한한 상상력을 통해 관객과 함께 만들어가는 좀 더 주체적이고 전지전능한 역할이 필요했던 것이다. 그런 이유로 무대감독 역(役)은 해설자(narrator) 이상의 훨씬 더 복잡하고 다 기능적인 역할을 수행한다. 이에 본 논문은 『우리읍내』의 무대감독(stage manager) 배역에 나타난 극적 기능을 알아보기 위해 그 전제로서 극장주의 연극 스타일(style)과 연극적 약속(theatrical convention)의 개념을 정확히 규명한 이후 연극적 약속(theatrical convention) 맺기, 장면 진행과 장면 전환의 책임자, 작가 사상의 전달자(messenger), 극적 리듬과 템포의 조절 순으로 범주화시켜 고찰해 봄으로써 극장주의적인 연극적 약속을 통해 진정한 연극적 재미와 감동을 창출하려는 무대형상화 종사자들에게 도움을 주고자 한다.

호손의 독자 조종: '머리말'을 중심으로 (Hawthorne's control of the reader represented in his prefaces)

  • Nathaniel Hawthorne seems to realize the reader's role in bringing his creation of fiction to completion. Almost all of Hawthorne's prefaces may be considered in terms of their contribution to the writer's narrative strategy. When he refers to the audience in the prefatory essay, "The Custom-House" and other prefaces to his major works as "the Reader," Hawthorne is establishing a mutual complicity that will continue throughout the following narratives. According to this rhetorical alliance, the writer's obligation is to get the story into the reader's imagination by any means possible, while the reader's share is to believe the story as much as possible while it is being told. The ultimate issue is thus not whether any event actually happened as Hawthorne reports it but whether readers are willing to grant the event credence while they are reading. Hawthorne's relationship with his audience is not congenial. In his prefaces, Hawthorne sometimes reveals a narrator who evades a fixed identity. The introduction of an unreliable narrator helps illuminate the unresolved, elusive ambiguity in Hawthorne's stories. Hawthorne seeks to make his narrative ambiguous frequently utilizing the very same indeterminacy so often cherished by poststructuralists. No critical term may be more firmly associated with the works of Hawthorne than ambiguity. Looking for new readers with more fresh eyes, Hawthorne's narratives always remain open to reinterpretation. After all, Hawthorne's prefaces (sometimes including unreliable narrators) help him become one of the most frustrating and fascinating novelists.

미완의 만보자 -도시의 시선으로 『군중의 남자』 읽기 (The Unfulfilled Journey of a Flâneur: Reading "The Man of the Crowd" through the Eyes of the City)

  • This paper argues that what Edgar Allan Poe pursues in ;The Man of the Crowd" (1840) is not a story that can be told but an active reading that must be mediated. It is not only because the subject of the pursuit, the secret of the flaneur, remains veiled until the end, but also because the story proves itself to be a reading of various kinds of other texts: that is, the contemporary urban texts as well as the city itself. Although the 'man of the crowd' and his double (i.e. the narrator) embrace the figure of a modern flaneur, it is highly questionable whether the image of flaneur in the story fully qualifies itself as that of an ideal stroller, who can represent the free spirit of a detached collector. Rather, the narrator's flaneur reflects a panoptic perspective, systematically hierarchizing the constituents of the city. Still, it should be noted that ;The Man of the Crowd" raises questions about the idea of creation and appropriation, observation and originality, and reading and storytelling by ascertaining the impossibility of reading and through assimilating to the contemporary texts not without subtle acknowledgement. In short, this novella tries a new way of storytelling, of which meaning is not to be found in creation but to be mediated in modern experiences.

사설시조에 나타난 '아이'의 양상과 그 시가사적 함의 (The Aspects of "Children" in Saseolsijo and its Historical Implication in Korean Classical Poetry)

  • 본 연구는 사설시조에 나타난 '아이'의 양상과 그 시가사적 함의를 갈래사적 전통 속에서 한번 살펴본 것이다. 그간 시조 문학 연구에서 '아이'는 대체로 부수적인 존재, 관습적인 청자로서만 이해되어 왔지만 담론의 측면에서 보면, 서정의 맛과 멋을 한껏 드러내던 작품 세계(자아지향)를, 타자를 전제로 한 대화적 구조로 탈바꿈시키는 기능을 하기에 그 의미망이 결코 가볍지 않다. 먼저 사설시조에는 크게 침묵하는 아이와 발화하는 아이의 두 가지 형태가 발견된다. 전자는 호명된 존재, 관습적이면서 말 없는 수동적인 존재, 타자화 대상화 된 존재라면, 후자는 발화하는 적극적 주체, 근대성의 표지를 담보하는 주체의 모습을 보여준다. 이러한 차이는 발화 형태의 차이를 넘어서 미학적 질서의 차이를 노정하기도 한다. 즉 전자의 '아이'는 시적 화자의 내면적 요청에 의해 관념적으로 생산된 것인 만큼 주로 시적 화자의 서정성을 극대화하는 장치로서 활용될 뿐만 아니라 독자-텍스트 간의 동일화 담론의 미학적 질서를 형성한다면, 후자의 '아이'는 이질적인 발화들이 만들어내는 공명으로 인해 텍스트에 역동성을 부여함은 물론 독자-텍스트 간의 거리화 담론의 미학적 질서를 형성한다. 사설시조의 아이가 보여주는 이러한 면면들은 전대 시가에서 이미 그 편린들이 발견된다. 향가의 경우, 타자의 결핍을 해소하기 위해 요청된 존재로서 발화하지만 대상화된 존재로서의 '아이'가, 고려 속요의 경우 시적 화자에 의해 침묵을 강요받지만 이를 자발적인 발설로 깨뜨려버리는 적극적인 '아이'가, 시조의 경우는 '아이'의 훈육 및 성장과 관련한 노래가 등장하기도 해서 특이점을 보여주긴 하지만 발화의 측면에서 대체로 시적 화자에 의해 대상화 된 '아이'가 우세하게 등장하는 점이 바로 그것이다. 사설시조를 포함해 전대 시가에서 발견되는 이러한 아이의 모습은 주로 중세가 부과한 아이의 모습과 연결된다면, 이전 시가에서와는 달리, 사설시조만이 보여주는 새로운 아이의 모습은 중세에서 근대로의 이행기, 시대적 징후의 단면들을 보여준다. 즉 작품 편수가 많지는 않지만, 사설시조에서 발견되는 적극적인 '아이'의 모습은 '개인'을 내세우면서 더 이상 중세가 부과한 '아이다움'의 테두리에 있지 않는 새로움을 보여준다. 사설시조의 '아이'가 보여주는 새로움은 순진무구한 존재로서 '아동(child, infant)'이라는 근대적 개념과는 거리가 있지만, 발화 속에서 제시되는 다성성, 웃음, 개인의 중시, 다중 시선 등의 측면에서 근대의 일면을 드러낸다는 점에서 주목된다.

The Layer of Emotion that Makes up the Poem "Falling Flowers(落花) " by Cho Ji-Hoon

  • This study of Cho Ji - Hoon's Poem "Falling Flowers" was attempted to find the mechanism of poetic healing and utilize it for literary therapy. In this study, I examined how Cho Ji-Hoon's poem "Falling Flowers" encoded crying. Especially, we focused on the organic relationship of each layer represented by poem and put emotional codes on the layer of functor and argument. The results are as follow. It represents the Separation Layer of 1-3strophes, 4-6strophes constitute the Time Layer, and 7-9strophes the Sadness Layer. This poem proceeds the encoding of the sentence in which the crying of cuckoo in the 1-3strophes transforms into the crying of the poetic narrator in the last 9strophe. The relation of emotional layers in this poem is in the same function relations as "(1-3strophes) ${\subset}$ (4-6strophes) ${\subset}$ (7-9strophes)". Since these functional relations consist of the encoding of sadness, encrypts emotion signals of sadness as "U+U+U" becomes "UUU". 1-3strophes' U is the cry of the cuckoo, and U of the 4-6strophes is blood cry. Therefore, "UUU" is the blood cry of poetic narrator. This Cho Ji-Hoon's poem has a Han(恨) at its base. So, as Cho Ji-Hoon's poem "Falling Flowers" is uttered, the poetic mechanism of U, the code of sadness, is amplified. Then we get caught up in the emotions we want to cry. The poetic catharsis of "crying" is providing the effect of literary therapy. In the future, it will be possible to develop a more effective literary therapy technique by developing a literary therapy program like this poetic structure.

미국의 로맨스 소설과 프래그머티즘 철학과의 연속성에 관한 고찰-허먼 멜빌의 『모비딕』을 중심으로 (A Study of the Continuity Between the American Romance Novel and American Pragmatism: A Reading of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick)

  • This essay attempts to read Melville's Moby-Dick as a prefiguration of American pragmatism, especially Jamesian version of it. Underlying this project is the assumption that the American Romance and James's pragmatism partake in the enduring tradition of American thoughts and imagination. Despite the commonality in their roots, the continuity between these two products of American culture has received few critical assessments. The American Romance has rarely been discussed in terms of American pragmatism in part because critics have tended to narrowly define the latter as a kind of relativistic philosophy equivalent to practical instrumentalism, political realism and romantic utilitarianism. Consequently, they have favored literary works in the realistic tradition for their textual analyses, while eschewing a more imaginative genre like the American Romance. My contention is that James's version of pragmatism is a future oriented pluralism which is unable to dispense with the power of imagination and the talent for seeing unforeseen possibilities inherent in nature and culture. James's pragmatism is in tune with the American Romance in that it savours the attractions of alternative possibilities created by the genre in which the imaginary world is imbued with the actual one. The pragmatic impulse in Moby-Dick finds its finest expression in the words and acts of Ishmael. Through this protean narrator, Melville renders the text of Moby-Dick symbolic, fragmentary and thereby pluralistic in its meaning. With his rhetoric of incompletion and by refraining from totalizing what he experiences, Ishmael shuns finality in truth and entices the reader to join his intellectual journey with a non-foundational notion of truth and meaning in view. Ishmael also envisages pragmatists' beliefs that experience is fluid in nature and the universe is in a constant state of becoming. Yet Ishmael as the narrator of Moby-Dick is more functional than foundational.

HMM Based Part of Speech Tagging for Hadith Isnad

  • The Hadith is the second source of Islamic jurisprudence after Qur'an. Both sources are indispensable for muslims to practice Islam. All Ahadith are collected and are written. But most books of Hadith contain Ahadith that can be weak or rejected. So, quite a long time, scholars of Hadith have defined laws, rules and principles of Hadith to know the correct Hadith (Sahih) from the fair (Hassen) and weak (Dhaif). Unfortunately, the application of these rules, laws and principles is done manually by the specialists or students until now. The work presented in this paper is part of the automatic treatment of Hadith, and more specifically, it aims to automatically process the chain of narrators (Hadith Isnad) to find its different components and affect for each component its own tag using a statistical method: the Hidden Markov Models (HMM). This method is a power abstraction for times series data and a robust tool for representing probability distributions over sequences of observations. In this paper, we describe an important tool in the Hadith isnad processing: A chunker with HMM. The role of this tool is to decompose the chain of narrators (Isnad) and determine the tag of each part of Isnad (POI). First, we have compiled a tagset containing 13 tags. Then, we have used these tags to manually conceive a corpus of 100 chains of narrators from "Sahih Alboukhari" and we have extracted a lexicon from this corpus. This lexicon is a set of XML documents based on HPSG features and it contains the information of 134 narrators. After that, we have designed and implemented an analyzer based on HMM that permit to assign for each part of Isnad its proper tag and for each narrator its features. The system was tested on 2661 not duplicated Isnad from "Sahih Alboukhari". The obtained result achieved F-scores of 93%.

인종적 타자의 매혹 -로런스의 『께짤코아틀』에 그려진 인종과 성 (The Lure of the Racial Other: Race and Sexuality in D. H. Lawrence's Quetzalcoatl)

  • Kate Burns, a disillusioned Irish woman in Quetzalcoatl, has alternating feelings of fear, repulsion, oppression, compassion, and fascination vis-à-vis Mexican people. Together, these feelings are constitutive of a psychic process in which an imaginary appropriation of the other takes place. In this process white subjectivity represents or reconstructs the dark race precisely as its other. At the same time, Kate's feelings register her anxious recognition of the resistant, unappropriated being of the dark people: their true 'otherness,' or what Žižek calls "the excess of existence over representation." The otherness, frequently racial and sexual, evokes mixed feelings in the white subject. Kate's at once amorous and aggressive response to Ramón's body provides a case in point. Kate's emotional undulation is considerably mitigated in The Plumed Serpent, the revised version of the novel in which the theme of 'blood-mixing' is pushed to the ultimate point. Yet the interracial marriage resolves neither the racial nor the ontologico-sexual issues raised in the first version. Kate is still attracted to Ramón in his sagacious sensuality but goes on to get married to Cipriano, a pure Indian, only to find his mechanical masculinity ever unpalatable. This shows, not just Lawrence's wilful commitment to the 'blood-mixing' theme, but perhaps his lingering taboo against miscegenation as well. Changes in the plot entail those in the narrative voice. In Quetzalcoatl, Owen, a spectatorial and gossipy character, frequently competes for narration with the fully participant third-person narrator. In The Plumed Serpent, the third-person narrator becomes predominant, now attempting with greater confidence to present the reality of the racial other immediately to European readership. While such immediacy is illusional, narrative insistence on it implies a struggle to displace racial stereotypes and offer an experiential understanding of the other.
