Design of Zero-Stress Encapsulation for Mechanical Stability of Flexible OLED Displays (유연 OLED 디스플레이의 기계적 안정성을 위한 제로 스트레스 봉지막 설계)

  • In this paper, a study was conducted on encapsulation technology for high mechanical stability of flexible displays. First, unlike conventional encapsulation barrier that exclude cracks as much as possible for low water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), mechanical properties were improved by using a defect suppression mechanism introduced with crack arresters. The zero-stress encapsulation barrier optimizes the residual stress of the thin film based to improve the internal mechanical stability. The zero-stress encapsulation barrier was applied to the organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) to confirm its characteristics and lifetime. Due to improved internal mechanical stability, it has a longer lifetime more than 35% compared to conventional encapsulation technologies. As the zero-stress encapsulation barrier proposed in this study does not require additional deposition process, it is not difficult to apply it. Based on various advantages, it is expected to play an important role in flexible displays.

Changes in phytoplankton size structure in the East Sea 2018-2020 due to marine environment change (해양환경 변화로 인한 2018~2020년 동해 식물플랑크톤 크기 구조 변화)

  • We conducted a field survey from 2018 to 2020 to analyze the spatial distribution of phytoplankton communities at 13 stations in the East Sea. The diatom Chaetoceros curvisetus appeared as the dominant species in winter, and small flagellates less than 20 ㎛ prevailed in all seasons except winter. The seasonal average range of the micro (>20 ㎛), nano (20 ㎛≥Chl-a>3 ㎛), and picophytoplankton (≤3 ㎛) was 20.6-26.2%, 27.1-35.9%, and 40.8-49.0%, respectively. The composition ratio of nano and picophytoplankton was high at the surface mixed layer from spring to autumn when the water columns were strongly stratified. Especially, the stability of the water mass was increased when the summer surface water temperature was higher than that of the previous year. As a result, the nutrient inflow from the lower layer to the surface was reduced as the ocean stratification layer was strengthened. Therefore, the composition ratio of nano and picophytoplankton was the highest at 77.9% at the surface mixed layer. In conclusion, the structure of the phytoplankton community in the East Sea has been miniaturized, which is expected to form a complex microbial food web structure and lower the carbon transfer rate to the upper consumer stage.

Primary Productivity and Nitrogenous Nutrient Dynamics in the East Sea of Korea (한국 동해의 기초생산력과 질소계 영양염의 동적관계)

  • The daily net primary production by phytoplankton and ammonium excretion by macrozooplankton (> $350{\mu}m$) were measured to understand the nitrogenous nutrient dynamics in the southern part of the East Sea of Korea. At most of the staions, water columns were well stratified and strongly developed pycnoclines and matching nutriclines could be found near the 20-60m. Total chlorophyll ranged between $1.22-3.24{\mu}g$ ChI/l and nano-fractions of chlorophyll ranged from 43.2 to 99.6% in the surface layer. The daily net primary production by phytoplankton ranged from 0.75 to 2.04 gC/$m^2$/d and averaged to be 1.5 gC/$m^2$/d. 1t is evidenced that the primary production and chlorophyll content are relatively high in frontal waters where the North Korean Cold Water meets with the East Korean Warm Water. The turnover time of nitrate in the euphotic zone ranged from 0.2 day to 1.6 day and averaged to be 0.8 day. The N:P ratio of the study area shows on the average 13.4 which indicates nitrogenous nutrient to be the limiting factor for phytoplankton growth. Ammonium excretion by macrowoplankton averaged out to 1.3mg at-N/$m^2$/d, and contributed 7.3% of daily total nitrogen requirement by phytoplankton in this area. Calculation of upward flux of nitrate to the surface mixed layer from the lower layer approximates 7% of nitrogen requirement by phytoplankton.

Usual intake of dietary isoflavone and its major food sources in Koreans: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018 data

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Accumulating evidence has shown the beneficial effects of isoflavone on health. There is limited information on the usual isoflavone intake for Koreans. This study examined the usual intake of total isoflavone and its major food sources in Koreans according to age and gender. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The dietary intake data of 21,271 participants aged 1 yrs and older from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VII 2016-2018 were analyzed. The average isoflavone intake was estimated based on the 24-h dietary recall data in KNHANES and the isoflavone database from the Korea Rural Development Administration (RDA) and literatures. The usual isoflavone intake was estimated by applying the ratio of within- and between-participant variance estimated from the 2009 KNHANES data to the 7th KNHANES (2016-2018) data. The variance of the isoflavone intake was calculated using MIXTRAN macro with intake data for two days in the 2009 KNHANES. Complex sample analysis with stratified variables and integrated weights was conducted. RESULTS: The mean total isoflavone intake in the Korean population aged 1 yrs and older (n = 21,271) was 139.27 mg/d, which was higher than the usual intake of 47.44mg/d. Legumes were a major contributing food group (91%), with arrowroot being a major individual contributor to the isoflavone intake (67.2%), followed by 21.3% of soybean, 5.4% of bean sprouts, and 2.1% of tofu. The usual isoflavone intake was highest in the participants aged 50 to 64 yrs old and increased with age until 50 to 64 yrs and then decreased with further increases in age. The usual isoflavone intake of participants aged 65 yrs and older was higher for men than for women, showing gender differences. CONCLUSIONS: The usual dietary intake of isoflavone varied according to age and gender in the Korean population. This study showed that the usual isoflavone intake was lower than the average isoflavone intake. The difference between percentiles of the usual isoflavone intake was similarly smaller than the average intake. An estimation of average intake can be hindered by the occasional consumption of foods high in isoflavones, suggesting that the usual intake estimation method can be more appropriate. Further research will be needed to establish isoflavone dietary guidelines regarding the effects of isoflavone intake on health outcomes.
