  • In recent days, perhaps the biggest driver in new material development is the desire to improve restorations esthetics compared to the traditional metal substructure based ceramics or all-ceramic restorations. Each material type performs differently regarding strength, toughness, effectiveness of machining and the final preparation of the material prior to placement. For example, glass ceramics are typically weaker materials which limits its use to single-unit restorations. On the other hand, zirconia has a high fracture toughness which enables multi-unit restorations. This material requires a long time sintering procedure which excludes its use for fast chair side production. Hybrid ceramic material developed for CAD/CAM system is contained improved nano ceramic elements. This new material, called a Resin Nano Hybrid Ceramic is unique in durability of function and aesthetic base compositions. The new nano-hybrid ceramic material is not a composite resin. It is also not a pure ceramic. The material is a mixture of both and consists of nano-ceramic fillers. Like a composite, the material is not brittle and is fracture resistant. Like a glass ceramic, the material has excellent polish retention for lasting esthetics. The material is easily machined by chair side or in a dental lab side, could be an useful restorative option.

  • Nanopatterning is one of the essential nanotechnologies to fabricate electronic and energy nanodevices. Therefore, many research group members made a lot of efforts to develop simple and useful nanopatterning methods to obtain highly ordered nanostructures with functionality. In this study, in order to achieve pattern formation of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanostructures, we introduce a simple and useful patterning method (nano-transfer printing (n-TP) process) consisting of various linewidths for diverse materials. Pt and $WO_3$ hybrid line structures were successfully stacked on a flexible polyimide substrate as a multi-layered hybrid 3D pattern of Pt/WO3/Pt with line-widths of $1{\mu}m$, $1{\mu}m$ and 250 nm, respectively. This simple approach suggests how to fabricate multiscale hybrid nanostructures composed of multiple materials. In addition, functional hybrid nanostructures can be expected to be applicable to various next-generation electronic devices, such as nonvolatile memories and energy harvesters.

  • In recent years, perhaps the biggest driver in new material development is the desire to improve crown and bridge esthetics compared to the traditional PFM or all-metal restorations. As such, zirconia, leucite-containing glass ceramic and lithium disilicate glass ceramic have become prominent in the dental practice. Each material type performs differently regarding strength, toughness, ease of machining and the final preparation of the material prior to placement. For example, glass ceramic are typically weaker materials which limits its use to single-unit restorations. On the other hand, zirconia has a high fracture toughness which enables multi-unit restorations. The material is easily machined chair side or in a dental lab, polishes quickly to an esthetic finish and if necessary, can be useful restoratives.

  • Cadmium compounds with one dimension (1D) nanostructures have attracted attention for their excellent electrical and optical properties. In this study, vertically aligned CdTe-Si nanostructures with high density were synthesized by several simple chemical reactions. First, l D Te nanostructures were synthesized by silver assisted chemical Si wafer etching followed by a galvanic displacement reaction of the etched Si nanowires. Nanowire length was controlled from 1 to $25{\mu}m$ by adjusting etching time. The Si nanowire galvanic displacement reaction in $HTeO_2{^+}$ electrolyte created hybrid 1D Te-branched Si nanostructures. The sequential topochemical reaction resulted in $Ag_2Te-Si$ nanostructures, and the cation exchange reaction with the hybrid 1D Te-branched Si nanostructures resulted in CdTe-Si nanostructures. Wet chemical processes including metal assisted etching, galvanic displacement, topochemical and cation exchange reactions are proposed as simple routes to fabricate large scale, vertically aligned CdTe-Si hybrid nanostructures with high density.

  • Al2O3/SiC hybrid-composite has been fabricated by the conventional powder process. The addition of $\alpha$-Al2O3 as seed particles in the transformation of ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 to $\alpha$-Al2O3 provided a homogeneity of the microstructure. The grain growth of Al2O3 are significantly surpressed by the addition of nano-size SiC particles. Dislocation were produced due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between Al2O3 and SiC and piled up on SiC particles in Al2O3 matrix, resulting in transgranular fracture. The high fracture strength of the composite was contributed to the grain refinement and the transgranular fracture mode. The addition of SiC platelets to Al2O3/SiC nano-composite decreased the fracture strength, but increased the fracture toughness. Coated SiC platelets with nitrides such as BN and Si3N4 enhanced fracture toughness much more than non-coated SiC platelets by enhancing crack deflection.

  • This paper describes the fabrication and heat transfer property of 50 watts rated LED array module where multiple chips are mounted on chip-on-board type ceramic-metal hybrid substrate with high heat dissipation property for high power street and anti-explosive lighting system. The high heat transfer ceramic-metal hybrid substrate was fabricated by conformal coating of thick film glass-ceramic and silver pastes to form insulation and conductor layers, using thick film screen printing method on top of the high thermal conductivity aluminum alloy heat-spreading panel, then co-fired at $515^{\circ}C$. A comparative LED array module with the same configuration using epoxy resin based FR-4 PCB with thermalvia type was also fabricated, then the thermal properties were measured with multichannel temperature sensors and thermal resistance measuring system. As a result, the thermal resistance of the ceramic-metal hybrid substrate in the $4{\times}9$ type LEDs array module exhibited about one third to the value as that of FR-4 substrate, implying that at least triple performance of heat transfer property as that of FR-4 substrate was realized.

  • In this work, AlON-$Al_2O_3$ coatings were prepared on Al2021 alloy by the electrolytic plasma processing (EPP) method. The experimental electrolytes include: 2 g/l NaOH as the electrolytic conductive agent, 10 g/l $Na_2AlO_2$ as the alumina formative agent, and 0.5 g/l $NaNO_2$, $NaNO_3$, and $NH_4NO_3$ as the nitride inducing agents. The effects of different nitrogen inducing agents were studied by a combined compositional and structural analyses of the ceramic coatings carried out by Xray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the specimens EPP-treated at room temperature for 15 min under a hybrid voltage of 260 DC along with an AC 50 Hz power supply (200 V). Microhardness tests and wear tests were carried out to correlate the evolution of the microstructure and the resulting mechanical properties. Potentiodynamic polarizations and immersion corrosion tests were carried out in 3.5wt% NaCl water solutions under static conditions in order to evaluate the corrosion behavior of the coated samples. The results demonstrate that $NaNO_2$ is proven to be a good nitrogen inducing agent to produce high quality AlON-$Al_2O_3$ ceramic coatings.
