The effect of particulate contamination on the friction and wear between a negative-pressure picoslider/tri-pad nanoslider and laser-textured disk was studied. Particles of different concentration were injected at the head-disk interface consisting of disks with various textures and slider types at different speed. Durability increased and coefficient of friction decreased as the disk speed increased in a contaminated environment. Frictional characteristics and durability in the data Bone were better than those in the laser-textured zone. It was also found that durability of head-disk interface (HDI) decreased as the particle concentration increased. The interface durability with a picoslider was better than that with a nanoslider at any condition in a contaminated environment. Based on the test results, mechanisms were proposed to explain the reasons why durability with a picoslider was superior to that with a nanoslider.
Surface Engineering is a field closely related to Tribology. Surfaces are engineered to reduce adhesion, friction and wear between moving components in engineering applications. On the contrary, it is also necessary to have high adhesion between surfaces so as to hold/stick surfaces together. In this context, surface engineering plays an important role. In recent times, scientists are drawing inspiration from nature to create effective artificial adhesive surfaces. This article provides some examples of novel surface engineering approaches conducted by various research groups worldwide that have significantly contributed in the creation of bio-inspired artificial adhesive surfaces.
Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) such as Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and Atomic Force Microscope (AEM) was shown to be the powerful tool for nano-scale characterization of material surfaces. Using this technique, surface morphology of the cyclically deformed Cu or Cu-Al single crystal was observed. The surface became proportionately rough as the number of cycles increased, but after some number of cycles no further change was observed. Slip steps with the heights of 100 to 200 nm and the widths of 1000 to 2000 nm were prevailing at the stage. The slipped distance of one slip system at the surface was not uniform, and formation of the extrusions or intrusions was assumed to occur such place. By comparing the morphological change caused by crystallographic orientation, strain amplitude, number of cycles or stacking fault energy, some interesting results which help to clarify the basic mechanism of fatigue damage were obtained. Furthermore, applicability of the scanning tunneling microscopy to fatigue damage is discussed.
The electrorheology of hollow PANI derivative suspensions in silicone oil was investigated by varying the electric fields and shear rates, respectively. The hollow PANI derivative susepnsions showed a typical electrorheological (ER) response caused by the polarizability of an amide polar group and shear yield stress due to the formation of chains upon application of an electric field. The shear stress for the hollow PANI succinate suspension exhibited an electric field power of 0.67. On the basis of the experimental results, the newly synthesized hollow PANI derivative suspensions were found to be an anhydrous ER fluid.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used in various composite materials to enhance electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of composite materials. In this study, we investigate the wear characteristics of polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) blends containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). PC/ABS blends are commonly used in many industrial applications such as cellular phones and display cases and MWCNTs have been added to the PC/ABS blends to improve their electromagnetic interference shielding (EMS). We performed wear tests on PC/ABS blends containing MWCNTs under reciprocating linear sliding conditions with chrome steel balls as a counterpart material. The normal loads were 10, 30, 50, 70, 100 N, the sliding speed was 10 mm/s, the stroke length was 15 mm, and the tests lasted 900 s. The MWCNTs included in the PC/ABS blends lower the wear volume and friction coefficient of the composites. We analyzed the wear debris collected from the composites during the tests in terms of the MWCNT concentration using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The results show that the quantity of MWCNTs in the debris is proportional to the concentration of MWCNTs in the composite, indicating that the exposure of the MWCNTs to environments by wear could be increased with their concentration in the composite.

Large-area two-dimensional (2D) materials synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on donor substrates are promising functional materials for conductors, semiconductors, and insulators in flexible and transparent devices. In most cases, 2D materials should be transferred from a donor substrate to a target substrate; however, 2D materials are prone to damage during the transfer process. The damages to 2D materials during transfer are caused by contamination, tearing, and chemical doping. For the commercialization of 2D materials, a damage-free, large-area, and productive transfer process is needed. However, a transfer process that meets all three requirements has yet to be developed. In this paper, we review the recent progress in the development of transfer processes for 2D materials, and discuss the principles, advantages, and limitations of each process. The future prospects of transfer processes are also discussed. To simplify the discussion, the transfer processes are classified into four categories: wet transfer, dry transfer, mechanical transfer, and electro-chemical transfer. Finally, the "roll-to-roll" and "roll-to-plate" dry transfer process is proposed as the most promising method for the commercialization of 2D materials. Moreover, for successful dry transfer of 2D materials, it is necessary to clearly understand the adhesion properties, viscoelastic behaviors, and mechanical deformation of the transfer film used as a medium in the transfer process.

The motivation of this work is to use SAM(Self-Assembled Monolayer) for developing a rapid and flexible non-photolithographic nano-structure fabrication technique which can be utilized in micro-machining of metals as well as silicon-based materials. The fabrication technique implemented in this work consists of a two-step process, namely, mechanical scribing followed by chemical etching. From the experimental results, it was found that thiol on copper surface could be removed even under a few nN normal load. The nano-tribological characteristics of thiol-SAM on various metals were largely dependent on the native oxide layer of metals. Based on these findings, nano-patterns with sub-micrometer width and depth on metal surfaces such as Cu, Au and Ag could be obtained using a diamond-coated tip.

Nano adhesion and friction between a Sj$_3$N$_4$ AFM tip and thin silver films were experimentally studied. Tests were performed to measure the nano adhesion and friction in both AFM(atomic force microscope) and LFM(lateral force microscope) modes in various ranges of normal load. Thin silver films deposited by IBAD (ion beam assisted deposition) on Si-wafer (100) and Si-wafer of different surface roughness were used. Results showed that nano adhesion and friction decreased as the surface roughness increased. When the Si surfaces were coated by pure silver, the adhesion and friction decreased. But the adhesion and friction were not affected by the thickness of IBAD silver coating. As the normal force increased, the adhesion forces of bare Si-wafer and IBAD silver coating film remained constant, but the friction forces increased linearly. Test results suggested that the friction was mainly governed by the adhesion as long as the normal load was low.
The height of laser bumps has been considered as the limit of the minimum flying height in the contact start-stop (CSS) of hard disk drives. In this paper, tribological interactions at flying height under laser bumps are investigated in a spin stand for development of ultra-low flying head-disk interface. With the reduction of the spinning speed in a spin stand, the flying height is decreased under the height of laser bumps and, then, head-disk interactions are investigated using AE and stiction/friction signals. During seek tests and 20000 cycle-sweep tests, AE and stiction/friction signals are not significantly changed and there are no catastrophic failures of head-disk interface. Bearing analysis and AFM analysis show that there are signs of wear and plastic deformation on the disks. It is suggested that flying height could be as low as and, sometimes, lower than laser bump height.
